How to Get to Cascais

Getting to Cascais from Lisbon, the Portuguese capital is remarkably convenient. The Cascais train station is well-connected and easily accessible from Lisbon. A train leaves the station every 20 minutes and takes under an hour. Starting your journey from the Sodré station in Lisbon, you can enjoy a scenic train ride along the Lisbon coast, passing some of the best Lisbon beaches before arriving at the picturesque town of Cascais. Furthermore, Cascais’s location, just west of Lisbon, offers the added advantage of being in proximity to Lisbon airport, making it a convenient choice for tourists flying in.

Overview of the Best Cascais Beaches

Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa

Situated within walking distance from the train station and the center of Cascais, Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa are popular beaches with golden sand. These beaches offer a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean and wonderful hotels nearby making them ideal spots for a leisurely stroll or a relaxed sunbathing session. With easy access and an inviting environment, they serve as perfect choices for beachgoers in Cascais.

Praia da Rainha (Queen’s Beach)

Praia da Rainha, fondly known as the Queen’s Beach, is a small beach but a favorite among Portuguese people and visitors alike. At just a two-minute walk from the train station, flanked by Hotel Albatroz, we knew this was one of Cascais’ best beaches and consequently was where we chose to spend most of our day trip to Cascais. The beach is acclaimed for its crystal-clear water and stunning natural beauty. Nestled among cliffs, this small but picturesque beach is a charming escape offering a slice of tranquillity amidst the buzzing tourist scene. Restrooms and changing areas are available at Rainha Beach. A small terrace overlooks the area and is available for eating and people-watching. The beach is small and coveted by those in the know so arrive early if you want to assure yourself of a spot to spread out your beach towel. Lifeguards are on duty and discourage older kids from jumping off the rocks.  

Praia de Carcavelos

As one of the best Lisbon beaches, Praia de Carcavelos offers a unique blend of sandy stretches and azure waters. This town is closer to Lisbon than Cascais but we include the beach on this list because it is so popular. Known for its exciting water sports and low tide, it is a popular spot among adventure enthusiasts. With the right conditions, you could spend some time learning to surf at Carcavelos Beach or just have fun body boarding. You’ll take the same train mentioned earlier but get off at the Carcavelos stop. The beach is a 10-minute easy walk from the station. Facilities like the parking lot and other amenities enhance the convenience factor, making this closer beach a preferred choice for day trippers. Lifeguards are on hand during the busier spring and summer months, also known as the traditional bathing season. 

Guincho Beach

Guincho Beach, famed for its strong winds and water sports, offers an adrenaline-infused beach experience. This beach is located between Cascais and Sintra. You can take a bus or train from Cascais to enjoy this windy area. The bus station is located behind the village shopping mall. 

Situated near the stunning Sintra-Cascais natural park, the beach attracts visitors in large numbers during the summer months and is a favorite spot of the international surfing scene. Whether you’re a surfing enthusiast or a nature lover, Guincho Beach caters to a more experienced adventurer so if you are not an experienced surfer you may want to focus on Carcavelos instead.

Praia da Adraga and Praia da Ursa

Nestled near Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, Praia da Adraga and Praia da Ursa boast of unspoiled beauty and scenic views. This is a great place, if you prefer isolation and tranquility, these are the beaches for you. But they will take some effort to get to. The best way is to take the train to Cascais and from there you will need to grab a bus that departs every 30 minutes for the Sintra area. Get off at the Cabo da Roca stop just 25 minutes away. 

With fascinating rock formations acting as a backdrop, these beaches are true natural beauties. However, Praia da Ursa is a secluded marvel, accessible only at low tide, making it a unique attraction in itself. There are no services at these locations so come prepared with your own food and water. Be aware that due to the isolation of these locations, some beachgoers prefer to sunbathe in the nude.

Praia da Ribeira and Praia das Moitas

Located near the bustling Cascais marina, follow the wave-patterned cobblestone walkway to Praia da Ribeira. Also known as Praia dos Pescadores or Fishermen’s Beach, you’ll note the many fishing boats bobbing in the water. There are no lifeguards on duty here and swimming is not recommended during off-season due to the number of fishing boats active in the area. But this is the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful ocean views though and relax in the sand.

If you are following the promenade from Cascais to Estoril then this should be a stop for you. Praia das Moitas is a smaller beach that packs a punch when it comes to scenic beach views. This less crowded beach has fantastic water quality and serves as one of the best places for serene relaxation, offering beautiful vistas of the surrounding sea and landscape.

Additional Attractions

Beyond beach time and natural scenery, Cascais has plenty to offer. As you walk across the street from the train station you will cross the Largo da Estacao toward a shopping mall. Here you can pick up souvenirs and even beach towels if you did not pack any. 

One of the best things you can do is visit the Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum, a beautiful spot to not only enjoy the view but appreciate a bit of lighthouse history. Casa de Santa Maria, right next to the lighthouse, is for those who enjoy seeing what their house might look like if they won the lottery. Built by an Irish millionaire in the 19th century this home is now publicly owned and there is no entrance fee.  Casa da Guia, built in 1895, was privately owned until 1973 and stands as a witness to the town’s rich history and culture. Now both the mansion and gardens are publicly owned and open to visitors. There are numerous shops and dining options inside. 

For those seeking a bit of excitement, Casino Estoril, with its mesmerizing ocean view, promises a fun-filled evening. It is one of the largest casinos in Europe and was designed to rival the more famous Monte Carlo. It served as the famous inspiration for Ian Flemming’s first Bond novel when he visited the spot during World War II. 

Dining and Accommodation Options

Cascais boasts some of the best restaurants, serving a range of delectable Portuguese cuisine and seafood. Try the highly rated A Nova Estrela, which is affordable and has daily chef recommendations on the chalkboard out front. They are available for lunch and dinner. You can also check out the Taberna Cladestina Cascais, a Mediterranean tapas bar with a menu that you may want to camp out for. 

And speaking of staying longer than a day, for those wishing to extend their beach day into a weekend getaway, a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly to luxury hotels, are readily available. And some of the best hotels are right on the water! Looking for something upscale that is right by the beaches, then check the availability at Hotel Albatroz. This five-star hotel is next to Praia da Rainha. An affordable boutique option is Senhora da Guia Cascais which includes an outdoor saltwater pool, pool bar, and oceanfront restaurant. You may never want to leave!

Paris is one of the most romantic cities in the world. From its charming streets and cozy cafes to its awe-inspiring landmarks, there are plenty of things to do in the City of Love that will sweep your travel partner off his or her feet. Here are ten of our favorites!

1. Have a romantic picnic in one of the most beautiful parks in Paris. One of the beautiful spots for this is the 17th-century square, Place de Vosges, near the Bastille metro stop and close to French Romantic literary great Victor Hugo’s home.
2. The City of Lights is also beautiful in the dark. One of the best spots to enjoy the end of the day is Ponte Alexandre III bridge at dusk. You and your love can watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle as you stand over the River Seine. 
3. Speaking of the Seine, a Seine River cruise is a fantastic option for romance. The sunset dinner cruise is the best way to enjoy a romantic evening as it offers unique views of the city all while enjoying a 3-course meal. 
4. You can take a romantic stroll through Jardin du Luxembourg. Grab a chair and sit for a while to enjoy the scenery or take a toy boat for a whimsical sail. Art lovers can walk through the Tuileries Garden on their way to the Louvre where you can see the Mona Lisa. Meet a private guide for a more intimate experience and enjoy one of the largest museums in the world.  
5. Stay in the Latin Quarter and take a romantic walk through your neighborhood enjoying views of Notre Dame Cathedral and Sainte Chapelle. Another perfect neighborhood for ambling is in Le Marias. Stop by to see the Moulin Rouge, enjoy a coffee shop, and own your slice of the beautiful city while sidewalk dining. 
6. Capture the romance with a professional photographer. For a bit of extra cost, you can pose in front of some of the most romantic spots across the city, such as Champs de Mars with unique Eiffel Tower views in the background. Or your photographer may take you to the Jardin des Tuileries for one-of-a-kind shots at sunrise, or in front of The Wall of Love by Sacre Coeur. 
7. Attach a love lock on the Pont des Arts. Write your name or initials on the lock, snap it in place, and enjoy the wonderful views once you’ve thrown the key in the river. 
8. Visit the ultimate example of indulgence at the Palace of Versailles. Extended by Louis XIV, the palace was opened to extravagant parties and all the pomp and circumstance of the French aristocracy. Marie Antoinette married Louis XVI at the Royal Opera House. You can appreciate its structures which miraculously survived the French Revolution, though the owners didn’t fair as well.
9. And if you are inspired by that indulgence why not take it one step further? Hot air balloon flights can be booked from Chateau Versailles. Spend your day visiting the palace then put the cherry on top with a hot air balloon ride. Take the train from Versailles to Maintenon, where you can float into the sky. Customize the balloon ride to include a ride for just you and your love in a private basket or even include a 3-course dinner on board. 
10. Enjoy a waterfall in Paris! One of the most romantic spots in the City of Lights is a glorious outdoor space called the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. French history tells us that part of this area used to serve as a quarry. The park designers incorporated the area to include a 60-foot-high waterfall. The park also has a beautiful suspension bridge and a man-made lake.

Florence is one of the most popular destinations in Italy, and for good reason. With its abundance of art and historical landmarks, there’s something for everyone to see and do in this beautiful city. You will see some of the top sights in the city, including the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and Michelangelo’s David. This itinerary also gives you a chance to experience some of the local flavors with a stop at a rooftop bar with a one-of-a-kind view, as well as a highly recommended Florentine trattoria. You only have one day to spend in Florence, Italy here is a suggested itinerary that will help you make the most of your time.

Arrival and How to Get Around

If you’ve flown to Rome, a day trip to Florence is completely doable. The high-speed train can get you to Santa Maria Novella Train Station in just over an hour. No need to rent a car unless you plan to drive the Tuscan countryside and explore further north.

Florence is a compact city and that is what allows you to enjoy so much of it in just one day. You can walk everywhere. It only takes 10 – 15 minutes to walk from the train station to the major sites of the historic center. It’s less than a mile from the Piazza del Duomo to the Arno River.

This walk described here gets you from the train station to your first major site and gives you a preview of the city sites all in less than 20 minutes. Think of this as an appetizer for your eyes, as you walk from the train station up Via Nazionale. Turn right onto Via Dell Ariento toward Mercato Centrale.

Walk straight on toward Medici Chapels past Piazza di San Lorenzo. You’ll see Medici Riccardi Palace to your left (see more about visiting Medici sites in our “Extend Your Trip” section). Turn right on Martelli.

The Baptistry is on your right, the Duomo and Campanile di Giotto on your left. Walk to Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio to your left and the Uffizi Gallery is straight ahead. You’ve arrived at your first stop, the….

Uffizi Gallery

Cross the Piazza della Signoria toward Palazzo Vecchio. Walk past the statue of David. This one is just a copy. While the original used to be positioned here, weathering and a riot or two caused it to be moved to the Accademia. You’ll see the original later today.

The Uffizi is a U-shaped building. If you purchased your ticket ahead of time online (you smart cookie!) head to Door 3 with your confirmation to pick up your entry ticket before heading to Door 1. Or if you have the Firenze Card just go straight to Door 1. Door 2 is probably where you see the long, snaking line of people waiting to purchase a ticket. If you are visiting in high season the line is achingly long, so save yourself that headache and the wasted hours by purchasing ahead of time online or grabbing the Firenze Card.

Enjoy amazing artwork including Botticelli’s Venus. If you did not buy the extra ticket for the Vasari Corridor (rumored to be open in the Fall of 2022, or it’s not available for purchase due to restoration) be sure to enjoy the perk in the Sculpture Hall by taking a peek out the windows at the Arno River and Ponte Vecchio Bridge.

Galileo Museum

Tired of all the art, let science take the lead as you dive into the scientific mind of Galileo. We entered the museum with a local school group when we came upon it in the winter months. But rest assured it is not only for academics. It houses a fascinating collection of scientific instruments, some used by Galileo himself, dating back to the 13th century.

With a passion for mathematics and physics, Galileo was a man ahead of his time. He stood against inquisitors for his radical notion that the Earth rotated around the Sun. The true story of how his inquisition unfolded credits Galileo for his ability to stay alive in a time when that claim was enough to die by torture. And his final signal to those who stood against him can be found in the middle finger forever held preserved in defiance in a glass jar. This well-deserved symbolism will not be lost on any teenage guests you bring along on your travels.

After your visit to the museum, cross the Arno River at Ponte alle Grazie bridge. From this bridge built in the 50s, you can enjoy a view of the more famous Ponte Vecchio as you approach Torrigiani Palace. The significance of this view is increased when you know that Ponte Vecchio stands today only because a sympathetic Nazi official, Gerhard Wolf, and Hitler himself determined the city too significant to be bombed to complete ash during World War II. (You can see a plaque to Gerhard Wolf just above eye level on the Ponte Vecchio bridge’s ledge)

Walk to Lunch

After a walk across the Ponte alle Grazie bridge, turn left onto Via di S. Niccolo and walk to a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant named Come Dio Comanda for what will be the best sandwich you’ve ever eaten. I got the Caprese Special, a 5-euro sandwich that I would have been happy to pay double that amount for. If you don’t believe me just take a look at the reviews (it’s a 4.7-star spot). Amazingly friendly service and even the customers got up from their counter stools to step outside so I could order – I told you this place was small.

Take your sandwiches and a drink to go and walk to Piazzale Michelangelo for a picnic lunch with fantastic city views.

Duomo or Giotti’s Tower

If you’ve purchased a timed entry ticket in advance you can climb architect Brunelleschi’s Dome. Or even better yet, tackle Giotto’s tower. Started in 1334 and finally completed by Talenti in 1359 after the Black Death, you can climb over 400 steps for amazing views of the city and the Dome of the Duomo! Still plan to buy your tickets in advance to reserve a climbing time. You’ll get a 45-minute window to climb. Thirty euros will get you the Brunelleschi Pass good for all the monuments in Piazza del Duomo with a single ticket. This is valid within 3 days from the date you select.

The Firenze Card is 85 euros. Go to the Firenze Card website to see if that’s the better deal for you.

The Baptistry

Explore the Baptistry, the oldest religious site in Florence. The famous bronze doors are copies of the original doors on display in the Duomo Museum. The interior is equally special with beautiful mosaics which unfortunately were under restoration when we were there.

Take a break in the afternoon to enjoy happy hour at the rooftop bar and cafe Tosca & Nino in the La Rinascente department store. We went off-season so did not have to deal with crowds. If here during high season plan to make a reservation in advance.

Accademia

Wrap up your one day in Florence, Italy with a visit to one of the most amazing museums in Europe. Your afternoon is spent in the Accademia. One could spend an hour just ogling David, circling and staring at what an artist like Michelangelo could do with a once-rejected block of marble. I’ve only felt this way standing in front of a piece of art one other time, and that was when I was staring at the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. My mind was racing with something along the lines of “I can’t believe I’m actually witnessing this!” David is not just a page in a book but an actual three-dimensional piece that looks like it could walk forward whenever he chooses to. You expect his chest to rise and fall with each contemplation of how he will attack Goliath. No one walks away from this experience thinking it was smaller than expected!

Dinner Plans

Plan for dinner after this. Enjoy a lovely Florentine steak if that’s your preference or eat at Mercato Centrale. You might enjoy the highly rated Trattoria Marione al Trebbio, on Via delle Belle Donne just across from the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. Or if you still have the energy for a bit more of a walk, you can get to Trattoria Sostanza at Via del Porcellana. This 150-year-old restaurant only holds six tables so book ahead. They are famous for their butter chicken. Still, only a ten-minute walk from the restaurant to the train station for your fast train back to Rome.

What am I doing here? At least if you know me at all, this question is probably the first thing that comes to mind. Monet’s Gardens? Michelle? The two don’t immediately pair.

I’ve got two potted plants on top of our borrowed piano in the front room only because someone told me that would make the backdrop to my travel interview videos look homier. I’m not sure if the brown leaves show up in the shot but if they do you get a sense of what it’s like to be vegetation in the Silva house. If it’s not the type you eat, we don’t know what to do. I’ve given up on the front patio, those are all fake (maybe I should host my Zoom meetings out there). 

My mother on the other hand probably invented the “green thumb” phrase carrying on the tradition from her mother. And because of this affinity for plant life, she is the reason our Paris adventure had to include a day trip to Giverny and these famous gardens. She’s had a replica of Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies up on a wall of our house for as long as I can remember. So when we planned to go to Paris this had to be included in the itinerary.

Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and for good reason. With its centuries-old architecture, impressive museums, amazing culinary scene, and vibrant culture, there’s no shortage of things to eat, see or do in the city. But if you’re looking to get out for a day, Giverny is a great option. The beauty of the grounds really did win me over. As did the ease of getting there from the city. Just an hour outside of Paris, Giverny is home to Claude Monet’s gardens and house – two attractions that are definitely worth a visit. So if you’re looking to explore more of France beyond Paris, be sure to add Giverny to your list!

Best Time to Visit

The Monet Foundation opens the grounds from April 1st to November 1st. And in April the blooms of spring abound. The colors evolve with the seasons. The beautiful gardens and water lily pond highlight different blooms across the year and the Claude Monet Foundation shares the majesty of each season with the public.

We chose to visit in the spring and were not disappointed. It’s definitely the kind of space you want to return to again and again as flowers are planted to bloom across the length of each season. So if you can come multiple times during various parts of the year you will never find a lack of color on display.

How to Get to Giverny from Paris

Whether taking public transit or a private tour you have many options to get from Paris to Giverny. Choosing to go by train, you will leave from Gare Saint-Lazare to the town of Vernon. This is the closest traing station to Monet’s Gardens. Then a taxi or shuttle bus can take you the short distance, 4 miles, to the tiny hamlet of Giverny. Check for bike rentals if you are fit and up for the ride! Transportation options are clearly described at the Paris to Giverny website which I’ve linked for you.

You can also join a bus tour. The trip to Giverny will take up just a half-day. You’ll get a tour guide to explain Monet’s history on the journey there then walk with you to see both Monet’s house and gardens before your return to Paris. Or you can couple the trip to Giverny with a lunch and continue on to explore the opulence at the Palace of Versailles. That will make a full-day trip.

We were happy with the half-day tour and had time to grab a snack at Les Nymphaes, the restaurant closest to the exit from Monet’s Gardens. I enjoyed their outdoor seating and had a cheese plate with their house hard cider.

Visit Monet’s House

A short walk from the bus drop-off brings you to Monet’s house. Take a moment to appreciate what almost was lost. Monet died in 1926 and due to a lack of interest from family members and then a lack of funds for much-needed maintenance, the space was almost abandoned.

It finally opened to the public after generous donations and the care of the Claude Monet Foundation. Through the lens of appreciation for the hundreds of people who keep this monument to Impressionism alive, we began our tour.

Monet lived in the house for over four decades and enlarged it as he needed for his growing family. The barn served as his studio, the gardens his inspiration.

There are explosions of color in each section of the house, all chosen by Monet. Guests walk in the footsteps of the artist through his blue sitting room, the yellow dining room, a stunning tiled kitchen, and various upstairs bedrooms. Be sure to enjoy the views of the gardens and French countryside from the upstairs windows.

The large studio that housed the famous water lily paintings is now the gift shop. And replicas of famous works by friends as well as books on impressionist painters are available for purchase. You can even find recipe books inspired by amazing dishes cooked in his kitchens and served in the vibrant dining room.

Visit the Gardens and Water Lily Pond

The front garden, called Clos Normand, is divided by flower-lined paths and flowerbeds that show a riot of color no matter the season. We enjoyed the tulips lined along the path.

In the water garden, the land which he bought later, you can see the famous Japanese bridge, weeping willow trees, and water lilies that begin later in summer in July. You can get a complete calendar of what blooms and when by clicking here.

2. Book a hotel or home stay close to what you want to experience – the streets of Paris are an attraction in and of themselves. Give yourself the gift of placing your stay within walking distance of some of the sites you’d like to see. We stayed in the Latin Quarter and enjoyed neighborhood cafes, walks along the Seine, and an easy walk to Notre Dame cathedral as well as Sainte Chapelle.
3. Wear layers – the average temperature during springtime is in the 60s. During cooler mornings you may want a light jacket. There are chances for a few rainy days but this time of year days are longer. The warm weather in the afternoon allows you to pack in more activities or indulge in a leisurely meal at a sidewalk table of your neighborhood cafe.
4. Check reservations for dining on Sundays or Easter – if you plan to be in Paris for the holiday be sure to make reservations for your dining in advance. We flew in on Easter Sunday and wanted to make sure we had a good lunch before the jet lag kicked in. Restaurants can be hit or miss on Sundays or holidays. Check opening and closing hours with Google and check the restaurant website to see if you can make reservations ahead of time online.

Day Trips

A visit to Monet’s Gardens is well worth a half-day trip. You can read our full post on how to get the most out of your day trip to Giverny here. The artist moved to Giverny in 1883 and slowly built his garden to the glory that is now painstakingly cared for today. The famous impressionist gained inspiration for some of his most famous works from his gardens in Giverny. Eight of the murals that he dedicated years to creating are housed in the Musee de L’Orangerie which opened in 1927 just months after his death.

Booking a tour ahead of time is easy or you can travel to Giverny via public transportation. A direct train from Gare Saint-Lazare to Vernon-Giverny station takes less than an hour. You can take a shuttle from the station to Monet’s Garden. A fantastic website Paris to Giverny provides all the details you’ll need to plan your trip using public transportation.

You also have an option to make this day trip a full day with lunch and add a visit to Versailles. If you are into indulgence and want to walk amongst the riches that shine in one of the most opulent castles in all of Europe then Versailles is for you. This amazing palace was dedicated as a museum in 1830 and the palace, as well as the stunning gardens, are a testament to the talented architects that brought stone and living materials together.

Disneyland Paris is easily accessible by train and depending on the hours of operation during your visit, could be done in a rush over a day trip. You can take a train to the Marne-la-Vallee/Chessy train station just minutes from the gates of Disneyland Paris. Or, if you’re brave enough to drive in Paris, you might consider getting to Disneyland by car. The park is less than 30 miles out of town close to the Charles De Gaulle airport. Speaking of the airport, if you are flying into CDG and splitting time between Paris and Disneyland consider getting a hotel by the park for the amusement park portion of your trip as the Disneyland Paris and adjoining Walt Disney Studios could easily be a two-day adventure.

Tour a Neighborhood

A great way to enjoy Paris is to walk through the neighborhoods. You can hire a tour guide to help you explore an area like Montemarte. Or you can book a guided food tour in Le Marais. One of the best things we did on our trip was taking a self-guided walking tour through the Sacre Coeur area.

You’ll enjoy the bakeries, chocolate shops, restaurants, and tea or coffee shops. No matter which neighborhood you are exploring, any macaroon shop you come across will not disappoint. Just trust me on that one!

Dinner Cruise on the Seine

Some Seine river cruises are only for sightseeing. But a river cruise complete with champagne and dinner was one of my favorite activities. There are quite a few companies that host so you have plenty of choices. It is not as expensive as you’d think for a unique perspective of the heart of the city. You can choose shorter, earlier tours that cast off at around 6 PM and return by 7:30. Or extend the evening with a longer cruise that leaves at 8:30 PM includes live music, and leaves later in the evening. I encourage you to take the cruise that leaves as late as possible so you can see the city’s skyline at sunset. You’ll also have a chance of seeing the Eiffel Tower light up and twinkle in the growing darkness.

Most tours leave from the left bank and turn around at the Il de Saint Louis to return up the right bank. A dinner cruise will take you all the way up to a glorious view of the sister Statue of Liberty before you return to your docking spot. We enjoyed a three-course menu including a starter, a main, and a shared dessert from our front-facing window view table. Upgrades are available with wine or higher-end menu choices.

Enjoy the Beautiful Gardens and Squares

Walk through the Jardin des Tuileries on your way to the Musee de L’Orangerie. Sail a small boat in the Luxembourg Gardens. These beautiful gardens highlight the opulence of Paris’ past.

But don’t limit yourself to just these grander venues. The warmer weather of spring brings neighbors out to enjoy their local squares and urban green spaces. Local parks and squares give insight into neighborhood life. It’s a good idea to grab a picnic lunch and people-watch. Or sit for a while and catch a Petanque game.

There are amazing large urban green spaces that should not be missed. One of the beautiful spots for this is the 17th-century square, Place de Vosges, near the Bastille metro stop and close to French Romantic literary great Victor Hugo’s home.

Streetside Dining

Spring brings the best months for outdoor dining. This time of year, Paris’ weather is perfect for sitting outside enjoying a leisurely drink and a meal. Note – some restaurants won’t allow you to sit at sidewalk tables unless you plan to order a meal.

Or stop by your local neighborhood grocery, grab some cheese and bread, and picnic along the Seine! During the high season of summer months July and August, the City of Love brings out sand, palm trees, and beach chairs for the public to enjoy. But your visit to Paris in the spring is still a great time to watch the river flow.

Find a Unique View of the Eiffel Tower

You certainly don’t have to pay to ride to the top of the tower to experience the iconic Eiffel Tower. Catch a unique view near the Grand Palais along the Pont Alexandre III in the evening and see the tower light up after sunset.

Another good view spot is from the Arc de Triomphe observation deck. Or another opportunity to enjoy your Eiffel Tower view peppered with cherry blossoms comes from the park Champs de Mars.

You can skip the hassle of a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower. There are better city views from the Sacre Coeur dome or the top of the Pantheon anyway! Another bonus of taking the time to visit Sacre Coeur, from this spot you can take a neighborhood stroll and enjoy unique spots such as Rue De L’abreuvoir and the intimate tribute to the famous French-Italian singer Dalida at Place Dalida

No matter when you choose to go to Paris you will have a good time. But Paris in April is something special.

How Long To Stay In Lisbon

We spent six nights and five days in Lisbon. For us, this more relaxed pace and the luxury of returning to spots we felt deserved a second look was the best way to enjoy the city. But you could get away with 3 – 4 days if you’ve got a tighter time frame.

How To Get Around Lisbon

It’s not worth it to rent a car if you are focused on Lisbon itself. Parking is not always available, streets are narrow, and public transportation (e.g., metro, trains, funiculars, and trams), as well as ride-share programs, are affordable and readily available. Plan on grabbing a train or private tour that includes transportation for day trips to smaller towns such as Cascais, Sintra, or Estoril.

Train travel is a great way to day trip from your home base of Lisbon. The train station to Sintra is Rossio station and the rail service to Cascais and Estoril is served by Cais do Sodre station.

Lisbon Itinerary

Our host arranged for airport pickup and transportation to our AirBnB in the Graca area, just at the edge of the Alfama neighborhood. We found out from our driver we’d come just in time for the Santo Antonio Festival (the festival typically hits around June 12th). This is a giant street party filled with live music, amazing food from local vendors, and celebrations across the city’s most popular neighborhoods celebrating one of Lisbon’s most revered saints. Our driver suggested we rest up, and do a small amount of exploring in the area then to save up our energy because by that night streets would be swarming with parades, block parties, live music, and food booths.

For two days we explored the area and enjoyed the festival. A tin of sardines as a souvenir will cost you 15 euros in Chiado but you can grab freshly grilled sardines from anyone of the hundreds of vendors for 1.50. Coupled with a 4-euro mojito and you’ve got a pretty good snack! Not into fish, then try a bifana, a Portuguese pork sandwich. Sweet churros or farturas, the churro’s much larger and calorie-intense older brother, make for a great dessert.

If you are going to visit Lisbon during this week in June we highly recommend you plan for at least two days to just enjoy the evenings at the different street parties.

Exploring The Historic Alfama District

When we asked our youngest son what he wanted to see in the city he wanted to better understand the history of Portugal. We took a trip to Museo do Alijube – Resistencia e Liberdade in the historic Alfama district. During darker times, the building used to be a prison. Floors 1 and 2 currently cover the history of the dictator, Antonio Salazar as well as the resulting resistance. Ever wondered where Rowling got the name for the evil founding father of Hogwarts? She worked as an English teacher in Portugal from 1991 – 1993 and began her work on the books while staying there.

The 3rd floor covers the anti-colonization period and the eventual overthrow of the dictatorship on April 25, 1974. It was a fantastic and immersive experience that allowed the whole family to get a bit of context into why Portugal stands out among the other European countries. It was amazing to realize that anyone my age or my husband’s age would have spent their early childhood under this dictatorship. Realizing the lingering impacts of the grip of dictatorship on a still-healing country can definitely increase your perspective.

Exiting the museum you are right next to the Lisbon Cathedral. By chance, we were lucky to witness another Festival of Santo Antonio tradition as 11 couples exited the chappel after getting married together. This ceremony is sponsored by city partners and since the late 1950s was designed to give cash-strapped couples an opportunity to get married without spending too much money. The ceremony is televised to hundreds of admirers who line up the street for blocks pressed against blockades waiting alongside a live band, reporters, and camera crews to celebrate the couples as they exit the mid-12th century cathedral. After a brief celebration and interviews, and a happy explosion of white and pink confetti, the couples parade through the streets of Lisbon continuing the celebration with the city.

Enjoy the 11th-century Sao Jorge Castle! Originally built by Moors, the crusading Afonso Henriques took the castle in the mid-12th century. After buying your ticket (either at the ticket booth or online here – at the time of writing 5 euro for youth and 10 for adults) and walking through the turnstile, you can get a hint of its military history by walking along the walls peppered with cannons, though today you enjoy a panoramic city view rather than the threat of attacking ships. To the left, you’ll walk into the inner castle area, past a simple museum, where peacocks walk confidently with their young chicks, ignoring tourists and crying out to each other dramatically.

We loved climbing the castle walls and imagining the battles that raged over the centuries. Climbing to the top of one of the river-facing towers gives you a beautiful spot to enjoy a sunset.

The Alfama neighborhood is one of the oldest and most charming neighborhoods in Lisbon, and as you can tell, it offers a unique experience that sets it apart from other areas in the city.  There are amazing local rentals and apartments that you can check out throughout the neighborhood.

The Belem District

Use ride share or public transportation to get out to the Tower of Belem. This beautiful 16th-century fort was built to protect the shoreline from raiders sailing up the Tagus River. But more famously it was often the last thing sailors saw as they sailed out into the mysterious Atlantic Ocean. Granted World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1983, the tower receives hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Based on our research, we felt it was sufficient to see the tower just from the outside but you can buy tickets for 6 euros or enter for free with the Lisboa Card.

Walk toward the red suspension bridge, which looks incredibly familiar to anyone who has visited San Francisco, California. The “25th of April Bridge” which was named the Salazar Bridge until 1974, was built by the same company that built the SF – Oakland Bay Bridge and connects the city of Lisbon to Almada on the other side of the river. On the riverside promenade, you won’t be able to miss the Monument to the Discoveries. This concrete structure is shaped like the prow of a ship and stands over 160 feet tall. Built to honor the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, the monument also highlights Vasco de Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Queen Philippa of Lancaster, among others. You can explore inside the building as well as take a lift up to the top for panoramic views of the area. You can get reduced admission to the museum with the Lisboa Card.

When touring this area you should not miss the Jeronimos Monastery. Just across the road from the waterfront, this remarkable building is impressive even if you aren’t someone who pays attention to Manueline architecture or Portuguese history. While the church is free to enter, you can gain easier access to the cloister by buying a 12-euro combo ticket at the Archaeology Museum. If you are relying on your Lisboa Card please recognize it does not get you out of waiting in line here. So the best bet is to grab the combo ticket and come to the cloister from the Archaeology Museum.

Eat at any one of the fun restaurants along the quaint avenue Rua De Belem which leads up to the monastery. Pick up a pastel de nata at the oldest bakery in Lisbon, Pasteis de Belem. People debate which bakery has the best so go ahead and try this one (strickly for comparison purposes of course). Enjoy them while you walk through the simple but enjoyable Jardim Botanico Tropical. Or you can have an Uber driver drop you off at Time Out Market for lunch as we did. It was very crowded but we appreciated all of the choices. Tip: no outside food or drink is permitted and they do have workers that come around the tables checking.

The Mouraria District

Considered an eclectic immigrant quarter of Lisbon this is where people from the many former colonies of Portugal, Mozambique, Goa, Brazil, and elsewhere came once the dictatorship ended. We chose to explore this area by walking with a private guide in order to better see areas we otherwise might not have discovered. Lucia was amazing and able to share insights on the population here as well as accommodate us on the spot as she asked us questions about what we had already explored in Lisbon, things we still had questions about, and what we’d still like to explore.

From Mozambique herself, she and her family came from the former colony after the dictatorship ended. She helped us better understand some of the exhibits we had seen at the Alijube museum. She also explained the lingering impacts of the dictatorship on today’s Lisbon and helped us interpret the street art we saw as we walked. She took us to Cantinho do Aziz to appreciate one of the best Mozambiquan restaurants in Lisbon and showed us how to interpret the landscapes we saw across the different Lisbon neighborhoods.

Learning quickly that we had an appreciation for food and drink, she shared with us her favorite spot for ginginha, from a local vendor stationed at Praca Dom Pedro IV. And shared with us a tip for getting around the long lines at the nearby Santa Justa Lift via a nondescript set of stairs just beyond the Carmo Convent. She waited with us while we purchase tickets for the evening show, Lisbon Under the Stars, at the Carmo Convent and shared with us specific night spots to enjoy in Bario Alto (don’t miss Honorato for their amazing burgers!) then walked us just beyond the back of the convent. To the right side of the ruins, there’s a simple set of stairs. Walk up those stairs and you are at the top of the lift. All the glorious views from the top of the lift, without the long line and expense!

Tip: If you are going to see Lisbon Under the Stars, have dinner at the wonderful Grehla do Carmo. It was delicious and the most affordable meal in the area! Then you can take a short walk to Grom for gelato for dessert! So very yum!

She dropped us off at the Elevador de Bica, one of the most photographed spots in all of Lisbon. Here the Bica funicular will take you up one of the steepest streets in Lisbon and you can see all the way to the Tagus River. She also recommended we return to Praca Martim Moniz to visit the recommended Cork House for quality souvenirs made locally from cork.

We spent the rest of the day shopping in the Chiado area and had a drink at Delirium Cafe. You can’t miss this spot with the 2nd-floor window seating and a huge pink elephant by the entrance at the top of the stairway. They have a full bar with great drinks and a ton of beers on tap.

Parque Eduardo VII

We chose to explore the park on our last day. Named after the British King who visited in 1903, this taste of urban green is a beautiful way to wrap up your stay in the city with beautiful views of the downtown area all the way down to the river.

From the statue of the Marques de Pombal, you look up the slope of trimmed hedges toward the Monument and fountain dedicated to the April 25th Revolution.

This is a beautiful place to walk and take any one of the various paths that jut off from the sides of the slope and past the monument. You can stumble across secrete gardens and small ponds with statues surrounded by ducks and geese, or cross a bridge toward a lovely outdoor dining spot.

Or continue past the park to enjoy the Museu Gulbenkian.
