<p>When a friend asks you if you&#8217;d like to stay at their house in Cambria for a week you don&#8217;t say no. The beach town has amazing restaurants, gently curving stretches of beach, and hiking trails with beautiful views of dramatic bluffs. What&#8217;s not to love in this Central Coast spot built for family fun?</p>
</p>
<p>Cambria is right in the middle of a road trip between its more international scene-stealing cousins San Francisco and Los Angeles. It calls to mind words like &#8220;charming&#8221; or &#8220;historic village.&#8221; This doesn&#8217;t immediately align with a family of four including tweener and teen in tow. But you&#8217;d be missing out if you dismissed this idyllic town that hugs the coast as less than a destination. This town isn&#8217;t just about art galleries and historic walking tours. It&#8217;s a nature lover&#8217;s paradise and an active family has endless possibilities for fun.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Travel Facts</h2>
</p>
<p><strong>Getting there</strong> &#8211; Driving from San Francisco 232 miles or from L.A. 236 miles. The nearest airport, San Luis Obispo Regional County Airport, has direct flights from Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, Seattle, and San Diego just to name a few.</p>
</p>
<p><strong>Best Time to Go</strong> &#8211; this is the coast of California people. You&#8217;ll catch a win no matter when you come. Whether you&#8217;re looking for an encounter with marine life, wildlife or spring wildflowers consider the following dates. The peak Elephant Seals population at Piedras Blancas Rookery is from Feb to early Spring. Gray Whales are enjoying their southern migration from Dec to Feb and return from March &#8211; April. Bird watching at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. Catch a view of a herd of zebra at Hearst Castle anytime! These are the descendants of William Randolph Hearst&#8217;s original zebra that populated his zoo. Flowers are in full bloom in spring. The velvety green hills carpeted with wildflowers on the way to Cambria are not to be missed. Pulling over on Hwy 46 on a fog-free day could reward you with a shot of rolling green hills or The Rock of Morro Bay jutting out of the Pacific.</p>

</p>
<p><strong>Transportation</strong> &#8211; if you are not already driving then a car rental is a must.</p>
</p>
<p>While the primary economy is tourism, the weekdays are relatively quiet. For a family enjoying a week away at the end of summer, it presented numerous opportunities. We could take our pick of hiking, swimming, boogie boarding, or smores at the backyard fire pit. There was even time for a quick trip over to San Luis Obispo for dessert and a drive-in movie. Our top five things to do were all enjoyed without the crowds found in larger coastal cities.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Go Boogie Boarding</h2>
</p>
<p>The boys loved getting their board in the water and catching the gentle swells back to shore. They went out on two occasions, once just blocks away from our beach house. We entered the south end of Moonstone Beach from Shamel Park. Another great spot is at the beach found to the right of the San Simeon Pier. While California&#8217;s coastal waters are not quite as balmy as Hawaii, Joaquin, and Diego had a blast.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Go Hiking</h2>
</p>
<p>We did a different hike almost every day. Norman and I appreciate the exercise and the boys love to explore. Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, San Simeon Point Trail, and Harmony Headlands Trail were our favorites. Each of these trails is free of charge and an opportunity to see not only breathtaking coastline but also wildlife and marine life throughout the year. And just think, the more you hike the more you can eat! Tip &#8211; Harmony Headlands Trail has no shade. Plan to go early or wait for later in the day when you can catch a sunset. You&#8217;ll find more specific information about each of our hikes by clicking <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/hiking-in-cambria/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Take a Day Trip</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="726" height="544" class="wp-image-379" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/C4A9D2E2-0EC1-408E-BA69-31E090B9BDC6_1_201_a.jpeg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/C4A9D2E2-0EC1-408E-BA69-31E090B9BDC6_1_201_a.jpeg 726w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/C4A9D2E2-0EC1-408E-BA69-31E090B9BDC6_1_201_a-600x450.jpeg 600w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/C4A9D2E2-0EC1-408E-BA69-31E090B9BDC6_1_201_a-300x225.jpeg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px" /></figure>
</p>
<p>In order to keep our trip budget-friendly, we prioritized eating at our rental for at least two meals a day. We took a day trip to Moro Bay and planned for lunch at the House of JuJu. Another day we saved room for dessert and went to San Luis Obispo after dinner. You can make a pit stop at Madonna Inn for a sugar coma-inducing slice of toffee cake. Follow that with a trip to the drive-in. Tip &#8211; if you are as committed to the toffee cake as I am, be sure to call ahead to confirm they are not sold out. A fantastic backup choice is a shareable slice of cheesecake at Tahoe Joes.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stewardship</h2>
</p>
<p>You can bring a little social responsibility to your getaway through the local Chamber of Commerce. They provide a free beach clean-up kit that comes with gloves, a collection bag, and a checklist they ask you to return as they are tracking trends in refuse to inform their clean-up efforts. Not only can you improve the aesthetics of the environment, but walk away happy knowing that you contributed to the safety of the local wildlife. Tip &#8211; if you know you&#8217;re going to do this and have a high school-aged kiddo as we do, check in with your child&#8217;s school. See if they can get pre-approved for an hour or two of community service while having a day at the beach!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Moonstone Beach</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="717" height="423" class="wp-image-380" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/BC4238F8-F079-48C4-9AC8-A4A2A5551D40_1_201_a.jpeg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/BC4238F8-F079-48C4-9AC8-A4A2A5551D40_1_201_a.jpeg 717w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/BC4238F8-F079-48C4-9AC8-A4A2A5551D40_1_201_a-600x354.jpeg 600w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/BC4238F8-F079-48C4-9AC8-A4A2A5551D40_1_201_a-300x177.jpeg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/BC4238F8-F079-48C4-9AC8-A4A2A5551D40_1_201_a-87x50.jpeg 87w" sizes="(max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px" /></figure>
</p>
<p>Finding parking along Moonstone Beach Drive we walked down onto the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, an easy and heavily trafficked hike between the beach and Moonstone Beach Drive. The road runs parallel with many of the quaintest lodging options (such as Cambria Beach Lodge and Moonstone Landing) and high-quality restaurants (the cash-only Sea Chest and popular Moonstone Beach Bar &amp; Grill). You have views of the hopping Cambria scene as well as the zen-inducing sounds of crashing ocean waves. This gently curving beach peppered with driftwood gives you great sunsets to complement restaurants offering patio drinks and dining.</p>
</p>
<p>Step down from the boardwalk trail and join the moonstone hunters at low tide. Deposited by the higher tides, look for moonstones that are transparent and will glow when held up to the sunlight. And while I have read that the moonstone here at Moonstone Beach is different than the official moonstone gem, it still has that glowing quality when hit with sunlight.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>Our one week in Cambria was perfect and as the weekenders arrived we were packing up to return home. Diego is our family&#8217;s biggest beach bum. He gets the most joy out of being in the water no matter what temperature it is and could spend an entire vacation with nothing more on his agenda than beach time. But we all agreed we need to go back. We made great memories and took home with us a greater sense of peace that only comes from spending time close to the water. Before you go be sure to check out the Visit Cambria website by clicking <a href="https://visitcambriaca.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. They also support an app by the same name that I found to be very helpful during our stay!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Beaches</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-5236" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/andres-garcia-3_ROcQaL1uw-unsplash.jpg" alt="San Diego beaches provide many teen-friendly activities for families" width="839" height="560" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/andres-garcia-3_ROcQaL1uw-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/andres-garcia-3_ROcQaL1uw-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@andrgar?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andres Garcia</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p><strong>San Diego</strong> is a paradise for beach lovers of all ages! Teens can feel the sand between their toes joining in a family game or two &#8211; be it football, volleyball, or even Frisbee golf. Unforgettable adventures await with low tide exploring <strong>Point Loma</strong>’s tide pools and <strong>La Jolla</strong> Cove hosting playful sea lions and a cave kayaking adventure. And don&#8217;t forget to try surfing at Pacific Beach, or snorkeling around La Jolla cove. For teens looking to get their thrills, surfing lessons can be found on Pacific Beach or boogie boarding the waves at Fletcher Cove Park! What better way to spend days together as a family?</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">San Diego <strong>Theme Parks</strong></h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-5237" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/kenny-eliason-Kw5PXI0wJF0-unsplash.jpg" alt="San Diego theme parks SeaWorld" width="840" height="560" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/kenny-eliason-Kw5PXI0wJF0-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/kenny-eliason-Kw5PXI0wJF0-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@neonbrand?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kenny Eliason</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>When thinking of parks that are appropriate for teens, the San Diego Zoo may not come to mind. But do not discount its sister site, the <strong>San Diego Zoo Safari Park</strong>. This location is unique in that some of its activities cater to an older crowd. You can add on the Flightline Safari. Think zip-lining over the Asian savannah and part of the African plains, while seeing rhinos and elephants from the viewpoint of a flying hawk. While an African Safari and the Cheetah Run automatically come with your general admission, you may want to consider customizing the experience. </p>
</p>
<p>Does your teen have an interest in veterinary science or a career with animals? Then choose from one of the customized experiences at either the San Diego Zoo or the Safari Park by adding additional events to your ticket like behind-the-scenes tour packages that let you get a closer look at what it takes to care for these amazing animals.</p>
</p>
<p>Is your teen into thrill rides? Then <strong>SeaWorld</strong> is another option for your San Diego vacation plans!  Our oldest’s favorite ride was Manta with The Electric Eel and Journey to Atlantis ranking high as well. But they’ve added two new thrill rides recently! Check out The Emperor and Arctic Rescue (coming later in 2023). Date-specific tickets start at around $70 but go up if you purchase an “Any Day” ticket. If you are going to hit all three parks, the zoo, safari as well as SeaWorld, then you can grab the 3-for-1 pass for $173 which is good for 7 days. </p>
</p>
<p>If your kiddo likes the idea of getting up close and personal with the animals consider purchasing the Dolphin Encounter upgrade. You get 15 minutes to feed and practice training a dolphin. Or increase your time to 1 hour and don the wetsuit and hop in the pool with dolphins. Are you raising a future marine biologist? Then you can get them a full-day “Trainer for a Day” package for an experience they’ll never forget! </p>
</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">San Diego <strong>Museums</strong></h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-5240" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/kristen-colada-adams-XgKJr1Y5B-g-unsplash.jpg" alt="Some of San Diego's best museums are in Balboa Park" width="838" height="1257" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/kristen-colada-adams-XgKJr1Y5B-g-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/kristen-colada-adams-XgKJr1Y5B-g-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/es/@kekekristen?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kristen Colada Adams</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>With teens, a trip to the Natural History Museum might be old news. But there are some unique museum experiences in San Diego that can entertain the older kids too. Consider a trip to the <strong>USS Midway</strong> where teens can learn all about what allows a ship to function with a crew the size of a small city. They walk throughout the ship and get to interact with actual crew members who can tell them all about day-to-day life on board a vessel, or what it takes to take off and land on a ship. </p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-5242" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/jeremy-huang-BULJD59lk2c-unsplash.jpg" alt="San Diego museum USS Midway" width="840" height="560" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/jeremy-huang-BULJD59lk2c-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/jeremy-huang-BULJD59lk2c-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@plover37?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeremy Huang</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Teens can also get a taste of flight on their own with a <a href="https://www.midway.org/exhibits-activities/activities/flight-simulators/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">flight simulation</a> experience. Try your hand at combat with the Ride AirCombat 360 where riders get to experience a simulated dog fight complete with take-offs, rolls, and evasive maneuvers. Or you can try your hand at a virtual reality flight training exercise with the “Screaming Eagles VR”.   </p>
</p>
<p>Or check out the memorable <a href="https://museumofus.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museum of Us</a>. This thoughtful museum is focused on highlighting aspects of the human experience in a thoughtful way. Their decolonization focus is a welcome gift that allows visitors to contemplate how we might honor all people who contribute to our historical understanding of San Diego. </p>

<p>Do you have a teen with a need for speed? Consider <a href="https://www.speedboatadventures.com/san-diego/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">renting a speed boat </a>and heading out to <strong>San Diego Bay</strong> for a ride. It’s not every day your teen will get to enjoy the wind slapping their hair around while you bounce over waves and enjoy a city view. </p>

<p>If your group is interested in baseball, take a <a href="https://www.mlb.com/padres/ballpark/tours" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tour of Petco Park </a>home of the <strong>San Diego Padres</strong>, and catch a game. <p>Take your kids on a tour of the <a href="https://hoteldel.com/events/haunted-happenings-tours/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">haunted happenings </a>at <strong>Hotel del Coronado</strong>. Then hang out at the Hotel del Coronado beach for a bit. Grab yourself a drink and the kids a pretzel at Coronado Brew Pub in the afternoon and breakfast at Clayton’s Coffee Shop the next morning. You can rent a bike to explore the island or take a walking tour. You could spend at least one full day here on the island if not two by taking in a beach view with drinks for you and dessert for them at the Coronado’s Sun Deck followed by a performance at Lamb’s Players Theater.  </p>

<p>The quick answer is a resounding “hell yeah!” Doing even just 2 &#8211; 3 of these activities a day, you’ll save money with the <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/gocitycards">GoCity card</a>. For example, let’s have a Friday with the speedboat rental ($90) followed by a tour of Petco Park ($30) and an evening public ice skating session ($20 if you buy online in advance). That’s $140 per person. Then we’ll add a second day by the beach with kayak rentals at La Jolla (dbl kayak cave tour for $69 or rental for $45), and snorkel rental for later in the day ($40). That’s between $85 &#8211; $109 per person. So on the low end, you’ve spent $225 for two days. The two-day San Diego GoCity card is only $179 per person, a savings of $46 per person.</p>
</p>
<p>I ran a couple of different itineraries over the course of 3 &#8211; 5 days as well and there are increased savings for every day you plan to stay, especially if you plan to enjoy the larger ticket items like theme parks. When you look at the list of activities that get a discount you will see there is literally something for everyone in your group. Have a shopper in your group? There is even a package that includes dining credit and valet parking, along with shopping discounts at one of the area’s high-end shopping malls. Want to go hiking but not sure where? There is a discounted hiking tour package available. Have a historian on your crew? There are two or three variations of city tours available at great prices as well. You can check out the <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/gocitycards">San Diego GoCity card here</a>.</p>

</p>
<p>I worked here for an entire summer so I experienced the nooks and crannies of the parks that most travelers won&#8217;t have time for.&nbsp; So I&#8217;ve narrowed down my favorites to fit the needs of a shorter trip.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>Two days should be plenty of time to see the best of Sequoia National Park and I think one solid day at Kings Canyon would be sufficient, especially if you visit during a time of year when Kings Canyon Scenic Byway isn&#8217;t open. But everyone has their own schedule so I&#8217;ve included what to do for an extra day if you have the time.&nbsp;Each day&#8217;s itinerary provides you with the best opportunity to experience the best these parks have to offer. </p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Day One Sequoia National Park Itinerary</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/saira-RhuWFB6-Ghc-unsplash.jpg" alt="Sequoia National Park amazing hike by a meadow" class="wp-image-5199" width="840" height="576" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/saira-RhuWFB6-Ghc-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/saira-RhuWFB6-Ghc-unsplash-300x206.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by Saira</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>If driving into the park from Visalia on Hwy 198, you want to stop to enjoy the foothills with a stop at Hospital Rock across from the Hospital Rock picnic area. Here you&#8217;ll get a sense of what Native American life might have been like. You’ll see pictographs and bedrock mortars created by the indigenous groups that lived here as far back as 1350 AD.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>If you choose to hike in this area be vigilant and look out for rattlesnakes and poison oak. At the time of writing Hospital Rock to Potwisha Trail was closed due to impacts from the 2021 KNP Complex Fire. Always check<a href="https://www.nps.gov/seki/index.htm" target="_blank" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.nps.gov/seki/index.htm" rel="noopener"> the website </a>for the latest updates on closures.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>Stop at Amphitheater Point for your first views of Moro Rock which gives you a greater sense of the elevation change as you drive into the park.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/greg-ortega-PtfLnzXvlkQ-unsplash.jpg" alt="One of the best things to do in Sequoia National Park is to explore Crescent Meadow. " class="wp-image-5194" width="840" height="560" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/greg-ortega-PtfLnzXvlkQ-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/greg-ortega-PtfLnzXvlkQ-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/es/@antisocia1?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greg Ortega</a>&nbsp;</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Drive up to the Giant Forest area to enjoy Crescent Meadow and adjoining trails. You want Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road. On weekends the road closes to private vehicles. If you are traveling during the summer there is a free shuttle that runs from the Giant Forest Museum to the Moro Rock parking lot. On weekdays the road remains open, but the parking lot is small so it fills early. It also makes for a beautiful walk. At the end of Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road (also closed in the winter due to snow), you will come to the Crescent Meadow parking lot where you can walk to the trailhead. This 1.5-mile loop is one of my favorites in the park. The family-friendly flat trail leads to a group of shorter trails that connect to various sites, including Log Meadow, Trail of the Sequoias, and Tharp&#8217;s Log a fallen redwood tree that Tharp turned into his own personal house.</p>
</p>
<p>From the same parking lot, you have access to the viewing area atop Moro Rock which should not be missed.&nbsp; The 350 steps of stone stairs lead you to the top. And as you climb, the views (and drop-offs) dominate your focus. If you have small children be sure to keep them close by. There is a slight concern as hand railings are available but bars are widely spaced and open.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>The Giant Forest Museum, where you can catch the free Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow shuttle during the summer, is open year-round. But it can be closed in winter due to impacts from snow storms. Normal hours of operation are 10 AM &#8211; 4 PM.&nbsp; There are a variety of exhibits here and it makes for an educational experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>If you are staying in the park at Wuksachi Lodge you may be able to check in now. If not, you can still have lunch at Wuksachi Pizza Deck. Lunch is available from 12 PM to 2 PM. Dinner runs from 5 &#8211; 8 PM. Their menu is available <a href="https://www.visitsequoia.com/dine/wuksachi-pizza-deck/menu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. There is at the time of writing no tableside service but you can enjoy your to-go meal at the available indoor and outdoor seating before you drive back toward Sherman Tree to tackle Congress Trail. This almost three-mile paved loop won&#8217;t work off all your calories but it is a great trail that allows you to see General Sherman tree the world&#8217;s largest tree at 275 ft tall and 36 ft wide. For accessible parking, there is a small parking area just two miles north of the Giant Forest Museum.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/nils-rasmusson-oRPinlCTEbk-unsplash.jpg" alt="Sequoia National Park explore General Sherman tree, the world's largest tree" class="wp-image-5195" width="839" height="1259" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/nils-rasmusson-oRPinlCTEbk-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/nils-rasmusson-oRPinlCTEbk-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@nilsynils?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nils Rasmusson</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Wrap up your day by taking the Sunset Rock trail, across from the Giant Forest Museum, for amazing sunset views. You can contribute to the Sequoia Park Conservancy and its recovery efforts stemming from the KNP Complex Fire by buying a group tour ticket for the Sequoia Sunset Walk. At $15 per person, this two-hour experience is a small group tour with an expert naturalist who hikes with you and teaches the group about the people that called this place home, as well as plants and animals in the area today.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>This is an easy trail with plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the outdoor space even if you don’t make it all the way to Sunset Rock. You may want to enjoy dinner at <a href="https://www.visitsequoia.com/dine/the-peaks-restaurant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Peaks Restaurant</a>. Check in with the staff for dinner specials.&nbsp;</p>
</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Day Two Sequoia National Park Itinerary</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/roberto-nickson-9-hwto4NRCY-unsplash.jpg" alt="Sequoia National Park Beetle Rock at sunet" class="wp-image-5193" width="838" height="1257" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/roberto-nickson-9-hwto4NRCY-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/roberto-nickson-9-hwto4NRCY-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@rpnickson?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roberto Nickson</a>&nbsp;</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>On Day Two of your itinerary, if you&#8217;re an early riser and you want to beat the crowds, take Beetle Rock Trail and Big Trees Trail a 1.3-mile paved flat loop that can be accessed just a short walk from the Giant Forest Museum parking lot. Exercise caution here as well because there are no paths or stairs onto the rock. Bears are active in the area so if you picnic here later in the day be sure to keep food items in the storage boxes in the parking lot.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>This is also an interesting place to come to at sunset. You can, unfortunately, see a bit of the pollution that gets blown up the valley and learn more about its impacts on the area.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>Crystal Cave is on the agenda today so be sure to <a href="https://www.sequoiaparksconservancy.org/crystalcave.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">purchase tickets in advance</a> of your trip. You’ll plan for about half a day to experience this including drive time, walking to the entrance, and then the 50-minute guided tour.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>The KNP Complex Fire had an unfortunate impact on the Crystal Cave area and at the time of writing the area is scheduled to be closed until May 2023. Assuming you get to have this experience you will enjoy the ranger-led tour to see caverns full of stalagmites and learn about the animals that call this otherworldly space home.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>While in the cavern you&#8217;ll also have an opportunity to experience total darkness and a moment of deep silence as your guide will turn off all lights and request that everyone remains silent for a moment. It&#8217;s a unique experience as the depth of the silence in total darkness is surprising and is a unique part of the adventure that you won’t forget.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/james-lee-KRfXj36ug-E-unsplash.jpg" alt="Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks best things to do " class="wp-image-5201" width="840" height="630" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/james-lee-KRfXj36ug-E-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/james-lee-KRfXj36ug-E-unsplash-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@picsbyjameslee?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">James Lee</a>&nbsp;</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Wrap up this second day with a beautiful drive back to Lodgepole for a hike to Tokopah Falls. Before you start the hike you can grab lunch at the<a href="https://www.visitsequoia.com/dine/lodgepole-dining" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Lodgepole Cafe</a>. This grab-and-go service has hot sandwich options such as grilled chicken, and cod, as well as hot dogs and salads. These along with other items can be a great way to build a picnic if you want to enjoy a meal on the trail.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>The approximately 4-mile round trip trail to Tokopah Falls starts near the Lodgepole Visitor Center and General Store. Drive a short distance up Lodgepole Road to parking at the Lodgepole Campground. Cross the bridge over the river and start on the Tokopah Falls trail. You’ll pass several meadows, and cross two bridges before you catch your first glimpse of the waterfall. I’d plan about 2 hours for this experience which has a 630 ft gain in elevation that happens gradually as it leads you along the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River. There are a series of switchbacks as you come to the last section of the trail and start walking along the rocks. The trail ends right at the base of the waterfall.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>Once you’ve returned, you can celebrate with dinner back at the Wuksachi Lodge.</p>
</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Kings Canyon Day One Itinerary</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/michael-kirsh-5LY_1ZiuI4M-unsplash.jpg" alt="Kings Canyon National Park great things to do including exploring Grants Grove" class="wp-image-5204" width="838" height="1260" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/michael-kirsh-5LY_1ZiuI4M-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/michael-kirsh-5LY_1ZiuI4M-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by&nbsp;<a href="https://unsplash.com/@michaelkirsh?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michael Kirsh</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Day one at Kings Canyon if you drive from the Wuksachi Village area or at the Montecito Sequoia Lodge, you’ll take the Generals Highway toward the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. This road is closed during the winter but usually opens toward the end of April. It is an enjoyable 2 to 3-hour round-trip drive.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>If you didn&#8217;t get a chance to see Crystal Caves you can also enjoy Boyden Cave on this route. this small marble Cavern again needs to be booked in advance because it&#8217;s so popular.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/dustin-belt-pvuGqdpFCIE-unsplash.jpg" alt="Kings Canyon National Park has its own caverns to explore at Boyden Cavern" class="wp-image-5197" width="840" height="560" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/dustin-belt-pvuGqdpFCIE-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/dustin-belt-pvuGqdpFCIE-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></figure>
</p>
<p>Drive all the way to Roads End, the literal end of Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, and you’ll come to Zumwalt Meadow. The trailhead for Zumwalt Meadow Trail begins near the Kings River. It was once a loop trail but natural flooding in 2019 washed away a section. Now you can cross Kings River over a bridge. Just past the meadow, the trail will merge with the Kanawyer Loop trail for .8 miles toward Road’s End and Muir Rock.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>Be prepared for gnats if you are taking this trail later in the day. A simple bug net on your hat may help you avoid the annoyance of all that extra protein flying straight into your mouth. You can also bring bug repellant.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>Take a chance at seeing the Roaring River Falls by starting at the parking area 3 miles east of Village Road. The trail is paved and relatively easy.&nbsp;</p>
</p>

</p>
<p>Mist Falls is a great day hike option as well. This trailhead starts just past the Road’s End Permit Station and connects to Paradise Valley so you may share it with backpackers who are doing an overnight hike. For day hikers it is a noteworthy approximately 8-mile round-trip. Or 11 miles round trip if you want to include the Kanawyer Loop trail. The route gains 800 feet in elevation, mostly toward the last section of the hike where it is more steep and rocky. There are of course great views of Mist Falls but you can also continue past that area for more dramatic views of the canyon below.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>You can travel back to enjoy Cedar Grove Visitor Center and have lunch at Cedar Grove Grill</p>
</p>
<p>To wrap up your day in Kings Canyon, you&#8217;ll have a chance to visit Grants Grove Village. Be sure to check out the Kings Canyon Visitor Center for updates on the latest trail closures in the area.&nbsp; Just 1 mile from the Visitor Center, you&#8217;ll park at the General Grant Tree Parking area and catch a paved loop trail to the General Grant tree. This is America’s Christmas Tree as named by President Coolidge in 1926. Park staff still host special guided walks to the tree during the winter.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>From this same parking lot, you can also enjoy the 1.5-mile North Grove Loop for beautiful meadows, giant trees, and creeks.&nbsp; You might also want to catch the Big Stump Basin area on your way out of the park. There is a 2-mile loop trail that meanders along more glorious meadows and past large sequoia stumps that were logged in the late 19th century.&nbsp;</p>
</p>

</p>
<p>If you have a second day to spend in Kings Canyon you might want to consider enjoying a relaxing day at Hume Lake where you&#8217;ll have sandy shores where you can relax after all that hiking. This beautiful lake used to be a millpond for local logging companies. But now it is a beautiful location that can be enjoyed by everyone in your group. You can fish, rent row boats or kayaks, or just swim and relax on the beach. This is also one of the few dog-friendly spots in the two national parks. And there is a gas station in case you need to fill up. </p>
</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re not done with hiking yet, there are numerous trails that are good for short hikes or longer day hikes. You can even bring your bike and bike along some of the longer trails. </p>

<p>If you plan to explore both Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks then a stay at the <a href="https://www.mslodge.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.mslodge.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Montecito Sequoia Lodge</a> makes the most sense as it is centrally located. If you stay in Montecito Sequoia Lodge it will be an all-inclusive stay and includes cafeteria-style meals. There are no TVs or phones in the rooms or cabins but they do offer guests free wi-fi.&nbsp;</p>
</p>
<p>If you are entering the parks when Kings Canyon Scenic Byway is closed or if you’re just visiting Sequoia National Park then consider a stay at <a href="https://www.visitsequoia.com/lodging/wuksachi-lodge" target="_blank" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.visitsequoia.com/lodging/wuksachi-lodge" rel="noopener">Wuksachi Lodge </a>to keep you close to trails and locations you want to explore.&nbsp;<br />There are also numerous campgrounds available if you are interested in maximizing your time outdoors. <p>If you&#8217;re looking for an unforgettable outdoor adventure, look no further than Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. With their pristine wilderness spaces and crystal-clear lakes and rivers, there&#8217;s something for everyone in these beautiful parks.</p>

<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">The best way to get <strong>from San Francisco to Yosemite</strong> is by car. The drive takes about four hours, depending on traffic, and passes through some of California&#8217;s most beautiful scenery. Once you arrive in Yosemite, you&#8217;ll be able to explore all that the park has to offer, from hiking and camping to sightseeing and photography. There are lots of <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/things-to-do-in-yosemite/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">things to do in Yosemite</a>. The best time to visit Yosemite is when the weather is warm and the days are long. However, no matter what time of year, you&#8217;re sure to have an incredible experience. So start planning your road trip from San Francisco to Yosemite today!</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color"><a href="https://travelwithintention.com/yosemite-in-fall/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yosemite National Park</a> is one of the most popular road trip destinations in the United States. Located in California&#8217;s Sierra Nevada mountains, the park is renowned for its dramatic landscape. You will see towering cliffs, pristine waterfalls, and giant sequoia trees. Although there are many ways to get to Yosemite, the best road trip from San Francisco is definitely the most scenic. The journey takes you through some of California&#8217;s most beautiful countryside. The distance <strong>from San Francisco to Yosemite</strong> is just under 200 miles. So whether you&#8217;re looking for an adventure-filled <strong>Yosemite road trip</strong> or a leisurely drive through stunning scenery, the journey to Yosemite from San Francisco is sure to please.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Far is Yosemite from San Francisco?</h2>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">You&#8217;ve enjoyed all the Bay Area sites such as downtown San Francisco&#8217;s Union Square and the Golden Gate Bridge. Now it&#8217;s time to see more of California! Why not enjoy one of the most beautiful national parks in North America?</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Yosemite National Park is one of the nine national parks in California. <strong>From San Francisco, your travel time is just under 4 hours.</strong> The 167 miles start by taking 580 East to the 205. Keep going east to take the most direct route on Hwy 120. If you want to get to the national park in the quickest amount of time, this is the best route. You will enter the park through the Big Oak Flat entrance.</p>
<p>Yosemite is EV-friendly as well. You will find electric vehicle charging stations in the gateway towns as well as in the park itself at the Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite Valley Lodge, and the Yosemite Village Store. </p>
</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Most Scenic Route From San Francisco to Yosemite</h2>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">While some may want the fastest way, you may want to enjoy all the beautiful scenery that California has to offer.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">The beautiful vistas don&#8217;t have to wait until El Capitan, giant Sequoia groves, Half Dome, or Yosemite&#8217;s famous Bridalveil Fall tunnel view. Take the more scenic route on this road trip by turning onto 99 South from 205. This route takes you through Modesto to Merced to Hwy 140. Here you&#8217;ll be able to travel through Mariposa to Yosemite National Park.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Taking the time to research which route provides you with the most site-seeing opportunities is worth the effort. You can stop to explore an old mining town or parallel the Merced River while enjoying beautiful views. Traveling from Hwy 140 you&#8217;ll enter the park through the Arch Rock entrance.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"></p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">San Francisco to Yosemite Bus</h3>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">If you are looking for public transportation travel options check out the <a href="https://yarts.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System</a>, or YARTS. This bus service will pick up passengers from locations on Hwy 120, Hwy 140, Hwy 395, and 41 to take you up to Yosemite. Check the website linked above to get the updated bus trip routes and rates.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">This may not be the fastest route. But if you are traveling solo it allows you to step out of the driver&#8217;s seat. You can feast your eyes on a scenic route that will be a beautiful part of your Yosemite trip. The additional cost may be worth it if it means you can enjoy the best views. Check current road conditions before choosing your route as only the Merced-based route is labeled as open year-round and still there are winter limitations.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">The YARTS bus service routes are as follows:</p>
</p>
<ul class="has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-list">
<li>Merced &#8211; Hwy 140 with connections from the Merced regional airport and stops at Mariposa and El Portal</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Welcome to Los Angeles</h2>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">There are five airports serving over 100 million travelers in the Los Angeles area but if your friends have arrived on an early afternoon or evening flight to LAX there is a perk. You can hit up a spot that is quintessential So Cal. In N Out on Sepulveda Boulevard! Anthony Bourdain claimed this to be his first stop on any trip to Los Angeles and we can&#8217;t blame him. Nothing says you&#8217;re in California like an In-N-Out burger. The menu is straightforward forward and its simplicity is the magic. But if you want to look like a local take some time to learn more about the <a href="https://enjoyorangecounty.com/in-n-out-secret-menu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secret menu</a>. I&#8217;m all about the Protein Style/Animal Style!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">When our family came in from out of town it was an early flight so we had breakfast at Attitude Cafe instead. This highly-rated spot served up fantastic chicken and waffles, frittatas, as well as plenty of other traditional menu items. Don&#8217;t be fooled by that So Cal vibe. Los Angeles is one of the best places for chicken and waffles! The Attitude Cafe serves tender chicken breast over crispy Belgian waffles and real maple syrup. But this isn&#8217;t the only place in southern California that serves it. You can also get this classic dish at <a href="https://www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roscoe&#8217;s</a>! Their crispy fried chicken and waffle combo is a great way to kick off a lazy Sunday morning.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-3997" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220721_102344.jpg" alt="ultimate 3 day los angeles itinerary la brea tar pits" width="1151" height="863" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220721_102344.jpg 720w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220721_102344-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 1151px) 100vw, 1151px" /><figcaption>Unique museum that highlights a fascinating history of the area</figcaption></figure>
</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Downtown</h2>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Once downtown, you&#8217;re just minutes away from amazing high-quality museums like The <a href="https://www.lacma.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LA County Museum of Art</a> (LACMA), the <a href="https://www.academymuseum.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Academy Museum of Motion Pictures</a>, or the <a href="https://tarpits.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">La Brea Tar Pits and Museum</a>. These essential spots make it worthwhile to spend a day indoors. If going to the LACMA you can&#8217;t miss the outdoor art installation of street lamps collected from across the city. Yes, this art installation is Insta-worthy but don&#8217;t forget the top floor of the LACMA has an observation deck with wonderful views of the city. On a good day you can see all the way to the Hollywood sign!</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Once you&#8217;ve built up a hunger you are just a hop, skip and jump from another LA institution, <a href="https://www.pinkshollywood.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pinks</a>! This is the ultimate hot dog stand, and yes they sell other things too like hamburgers and chili. But you should really try any one of the 40 or so creative hot dog choices on the <a href="https://www.pinkshollywood.com/menu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">menu</a>. They like to refer to themselves as a Hollywood legend since 1939 when the original hot dog stand was established with a $50 loan from the owner, Betty Pink&#8217;s mother. The original brick-and-mortar location was built in 1946 on La Brea Avenue. That&#8217;s where you and your friends are dining!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">If your visitors have kids you can pair up the visit to La Brea Tar Pits with the <a href="https://nhm.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Natural History Museum of Los Angeles</a>. Who doesn&#8217;t love dinosaurs? This Exposition Park museum gives you a world-class chance to see them up close and personal. Their exhibits are complemented with Dinosaur Encounters, a live show that runs Thursday &#8211; Sunday for a small additional charge beyond your entry ticket.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Less than a 10-minute drive from the Natural History Museum you can still get that LA hot dog fix with a trip to <a href="https://www.earlesrestaurant.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Earl&#8217;s</a>. For over 30 years, they have been grilling and slicing their dogs to get all that yummy charred flavor and you won&#8217;t be disappointed!</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-3998" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220721_213731.jpg" alt="ultimate 3 day los angeles itinerary griffith observatory" width="1150" height="863" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220721_213731.jpg 720w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220721_213731-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 1150px) 100vw, 1150px" /><figcaption>Viewpoint from the Griffith Observatory at night</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Best Viewpoints</h2>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">You can walk off all of today&#8217;s calories with a hike at Griffith Park or park up by the <a href="https://griffithobservatory.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Griffith Observatory </a>and enjoy your focus on the stars. You&#8217;ll have one of the best views of <a href="https://www.travelinusa.us/hollywood-sign/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Hollywood sign</a> from the entry to the observatory but the real beauty of this great spot comes out at night when you&#8217;ll have an amazing view of the city lights of downtown LA! The observatory is open until 10 PM on most nights. If you can&#8217;t make that another vantage point with great views is Mulholland Drive. This scenic route through the Hollywood Hills has multiple hikes and turnout points with overlooks that will help visitors appreciate the area.</p>
</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Best Neighborhoods</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-4000" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/yaopey-yong-Ggyyqaw8gGU-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1150" height="1725" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/yaopey-yong-Ggyyqaw8gGU-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/yaopey-yong-Ggyyqaw8gGU-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 1150px) 100vw, 1150px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@yaopey?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yaopey Yong</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/el-capitan-theatre?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Some of the best places to give your visitors a taste of the expected Los Angeles scene include Hollywood Boulevard and The Hollywood Walk of Fame where they can see stars on the sidewalk of some of their favorite Hollywood elite. They can see if their hands fit in the handprints of famous movie stars or gawk at the TCL Chinese Theatre or visit the site of the Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre. The <a href="https://elcapitantheatre.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">El Capitan Theatre</a> is a must-see stop if you are Disney fans. Owned by Disney they put together a show as only Mickey can. Tickets are $12 and up but the extra expense is worth it as they often have Disney artifacts on display that are connected to the movie showing. There are also live performances before the screen lights up so be sure to show up early! You can enjoy the theatre restored to its 1920&#8217;s glory, view artifacts from Disney movie sets, listen to the Wurlitzer organ, and watch a live stage show all before the room goes dark and your movie plays. It&#8217;s a true one-of-a-kind experience.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">You can&#8217;t have a list of the best neighborhoods in Los Angeles without mentioning Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive. Shopping immediately comes to mind when anyone says Rodeo Drive and it&#8217;s not without reason. This is a two-mile road packed with high-end shopping experiences. Keeping with the high-end theme you can also visit elite mansions and their gardens. If you want to do something a little less expensive you can visit art exhibits, and public parks, or take a narrated trolley tour.</p>

</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Venice Beach And Santa Monica Pier</h3>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">We chose to take our crew to enjoy the afternoon at Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier. This is one of the best areas to get the sun, surf, and sand that southern California is so famous for. The world famous Venice Beach waterfront is filled with an ecclectic mix of people. While walking along the paved bicycle and pedestrian path we saw trapeze artists, beach volleyball games, a packed skate park and obviously this is one of the best areas to people watch.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-4002" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220722_145855.jpg" alt="" width="1151" height="1392" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220722_145855.jpg 612w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220722_145855-248x300.jpg 248w" sizes="(max-width: 1151px) 100vw, 1151px" /><figcaption>Santa Monica Pier fun!</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">You easily can walk along the pedestrian path to the Santa Monica Pier. Here you can enjoy all the typical fair food and rides alongside popular street performers and fishermen. Catch a quick spin on the famous Ferris Wheel, ride the West Coaster, or just enjoy wonderful views of the Pacific.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-4003" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220722_132506.jpg" alt="" width="1152" height="1536" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220722_132506.jpg 540w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/20220722_132506-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 1152px) 100vw, 1152px" /><figcaption>Honoring the creator of this fantastic and unexpected urban green space.</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Frogtown</h3>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Another amazing, but often overlooked neighborhood in Los Angeles is Frogtown. This Elysian Valley area is situated along the LA River and has tree-shaded pedestrian and bike paths that flow alongside for you to enjoy a taste of the outdoors. This section of LA is like no other, with homes and art studios right alongside tasty cafes and artisan breweries. It got its name from the hundreds of little green creatures that used to come into the neighborhoods from the water. Scientists now speculate that they were actually toads but Frogtown stuck.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">You can park alongside Marsh Skate Park and walk through the entrance to Lewis MacAdams Riverside Park. Walk past the exercise track toward the arched pathway. You can picnic there by the statue of Lewis MacAdams and check out the beautiful gate that fronts the bike path. Walk along the bike path toward Morning Service Coffee Shop. You can grab a high-quality coffee and pastry in the shop then enjoy the patio and watch the bicyclists fly by. A food truck sits right outside if you want a bigger meal.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">You can drive up to Elysian Park for great views of Dodger Stadium or get up close and personal by taking a tour of the stadium and catching a game! This family-friendly venue is where I saw my first baseball game and it&#8217;s a gem in Los Angeles. Catch a Friday night game and you&#8217;ll get fireworks along with your Dodger Dog and garlic fries! But be sure to remind your tourist visitors, as with a trip to many stadiums, to leave the camera in the hotel room. Professional-style photography is not allowed.</p>
<h3>Smogasburg</h3>
<p>If you&#8217;ve got a couple of teens with you on this trip to Los Angeles then be sure to check out Smorgasburg every Sunday in Downtown LA. Enter on 7th Street between Central and Alameda and be ready for a sensory overload! This open-air market is a hot spot for unique local eateries and beverage booths. You are guaranteed to find something for everyone! </p>
<p>During our last trip, we hit up <a href="https://eatcheezus.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cheezus</a> for a gourmet grilled cheese with truffle jam (aaahmazing!) and washed it down with a lychee drink at <a href="https://linktr.ee/DrinkSweetGrass" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sweetgrass</a>. I now have dreams of growing my own sugar cane thanks to them. <a href="https://www.tacos1986.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tacos 1986</a> had the best Tijuana-style carne asada on homemade tortillas. <a href="https://calidumpling.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cali Dumplings</a> served us fantastic soup dumplings. Vegan options abound! And then there are the dessert choices. Thank you <a href="https://leidcookies.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lei&#8217;d Cookies </a>for having so many cookie flavors that I had to order a box full! Needless to say, if anyone leaves here hungry they just don&#8217;t have a soul.</p>
<p>There are many more vendors at <a href="https://la.smorgasburg.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smorgasburg Los Angeles</a> and every third Sunday of the month they also sport a Record Row. If you have a teen who has recently rediscovered vinyl then this is a hot spot for you! You&#8217;ll wade across your own nostalgia as you flip through boxes of records, not just from the US but older releases from around the globe.  </p>
</p>

</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">On Your Way Out</h2>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">This is the last day of your <mark><mark class="has-inline-color" style="background-color: #ffffff;">ultimate 3-day</mark></mark> <mark>itinerary</mark> for <mark>Los Angeles</mark>. The Getty Museum is worthy of a day to itself. The Getty&#8217;s beautiful location gives your visitors not only a wonderful collection of European art from the Middle Ages to modern times but also great views of Los Angeles. They have also kicked off their outdoor concert series called &#8220;Off the 405&#8221; for the first time since Covid. So you can plan a longer stay by enjoying the exhibits then having a picnic on the lawn before the show starts at 6 PM. The Getty is free but timed reservations are required for entry.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">The Getty Villa is also an option if your visitors are heading up the Pacific Coast Highway. Just north of Santa Monica on the PCH this villa is a recreation of an ancient Roman villa. Housing a collection of both Greek and Roman art you can explore this amazing spot, the original home of the Getty Museum. Walk along the reflecting pool, take in the gardens and imagine what life would be like in an ancient countryside villa.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Plan far in advance as each of these Getty venues are very popular. Have proof of vaccination ready, a photo of your card will suffice and at the time of writing masks were required indoors. Concert tickets for &#8220;Off the 405&#8221; can be purchased up to two weeks in advance.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Have kids with you and don&#8217;t think they can handle another museum, then why not take them to Universal Studios instead? This is a great last-day adventure. Be prepared for loud fun, rollercoasters, and simulation rides based on popular movies like Minions, Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-4005" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/riley-mccullough-w_3rn8XY1o4-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1149" height="761" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/riley-mccullough-w_3rn8XY1o4-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/riley-mccullough-w_3rn8XY1o4-unsplash-300x199.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 1149px) 100vw, 1149px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@rileyhphotos?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Riley McCullough</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/the-last-bookstore?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Looking for a calmer way to enjoy a wrap-up of the city you can take your guests to visit The Last Bookstore and Grand Central Market. <a href="https://www.lastbookstorela.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Last Bookstore </a>in downtown LA no Spring Street isn&#8217;t just an Insta-worthy pit stop. This amazing bookstore is staffed with great people who are passionate about reading. Get your bearings on the first floor and enjoy its fabulous wall art or check out the vinyl collection. It&#8217;s here you&#8217;ll get a sense of just how big this place is with over 250,000 books on offer. But head to the second-floor Labyrinth to see the one-of-a-kind art installations designed as perfect backdrops for getting lost in a novel. Be respectful of passionate readers if you are going to take photographs and don&#8217;t use your flash. There are plenty of people who crash into the space to grab their Instagram shot and then leave so honor these hard workers, their amazing space, and the literacy they are so passionate about by purchasing something before you leave.</p>

<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Just a six-minute walk around the corner you can see the neon signs glow at the entrance to <a href="https://grandcentralmarket.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grand Central Market</a>. You could come here each day of the week for a month and still not do more than scratch the surface of this hot spot for foodies. Not just about the food, they host community and concert events as well so be sure to check out their website to see what&#8217;s on offer when you plan to come.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ultimate 3-Day Los Angeles Itinerary &#8211; What&#8217;s Next?</h2>
</p>

<p>The bright leaves and crisp air of autumn make Yosemite National Park the perfect destination for travelers wanting to experience the beauty of nature.  The park is home to many breathtaking views, including Half Dome, El Capitan, and Glacier Point. These three locations are all worth a visit in the fall but there are many other activities that can be enjoyed as well like hiking trails or horseback riding. There is something for everyone at this beautiful location!</p>
</p>
<p>In this post, we outline our top 8 experiences for Yosemite in the fall.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Yosemite Falls</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1303" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/jesse-callahan-MNtnaKks2n8-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="839" height="1259" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/jesse-callahan-MNtnaKks2n8-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/jesse-callahan-MNtnaKks2n8-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/jesse-callahan-MNtnaKks2n8-unsplash-600x900.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@jessecallahan?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jesse Callahan</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/yosemite-national-park?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>The Yosemite Falls Trail can be broken up into sections. The first section just off the Valley Loop Trail is one mile with a 1,000-foot elevation gain. The hike among the oaks, toward Columbia Rock, will take you to views of the beautiful valley floor. Just another half a mile will give you a gorgeous view of Upper Yosemite Fall. This moderate family hike is a great option for the whole family, and it&#8217;s just minutes away from the valley floor!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Half Dome</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1304" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/cullen-jones-Jm4ucR2BA-k-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="838" height="1228" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/cullen-jones-Jm4ucR2BA-k-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/cullen-jones-Jm4ucR2BA-k-unsplash-205x300.jpg 205w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/cullen-jones-Jm4ucR2BA-k-unsplash-600x879.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@cullenjonez?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cullen Jones</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/yosemite-national-park?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Do you want to see Half Dome from a distance or hike to the top? If you are looking for a relatively easy viewpoint then with just a short hike in the Yosemite Valley you can view Half Dome from Mirror Lake. Or channel your inner Ansel Adams and go to Cook&#8217;s Meadow for a gorgeous view of Half Dome in the background.</p>
</p>
<p>We could write an entire article just on how to get an opportunity to climb Half Dome. This all-day hike requires <a href="https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/hdpermits.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a permit</a> which is only available via lottery. Be sure to read the latest updates on the NPS website.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">El Capitan</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1305" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/david-tostado-lfNXdh8t-S4-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="839" height="1049" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/david-tostado-lfNXdh8t-S4-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/david-tostado-lfNXdh8t-S4-unsplash-240x300.jpg 240w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/david-tostado-lfNXdh8t-S4-unsplash-600x750.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@wildeir?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">David Tostado</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/yosemite-national-park-el-capitan?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Watch the climbing experts do their thing as you head out of Yosemite Vally. From the base of the valley floor, you will enjoy beautiful views of the majestic El Capitan. Just along the one-way Northside Drive the spectacular El Capitan in the fall is a sight to behold.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tunnel View</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1306" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/aniket-deole-M6XC789HLe8-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="840" height="560" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/aniket-deole-M6XC789HLe8-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/aniket-deole-M6XC789HLe8-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/aniket-deole-M6XC789HLe8-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@anik3t?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aniket Deole</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/yosemite-national-park-tunnel-view?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>The one must-see stop that everyone knows but we can&#8217;t leave it off the list because your view of the valley from this vantage point is all the more gorgeous as the leaves change!</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Glacier Point</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1307" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/oliver-niblett-BVFX_SnmT0-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="843" height="562" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/oliver-niblett-BVFX_SnmT0-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/oliver-niblett-BVFX_SnmT0-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/oliver-niblett-BVFX_SnmT0-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@ojnibl?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oliver Niblett</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/yosemite-national-park-glacier-point?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Fall is a great time to enjoy these majestic views. But be sure to check the NPS <a href="https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/glacierpoint.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yosemite Glacier Point </a>page for the most up-to-date information on access. This viewpoint is accessible via Wawona Road which is open from May to October or November weather permitting. You may take your personal vehicle or the Glacier Point Tour bus. You can also take the bus one way and hike back to Yosemite Valley.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bridalveil Fall</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1308" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/y-s-stYB3RB0LCA-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="840" height="1050" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/y-s-stYB3RB0LCA-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/y-s-stYB3RB0LCA-unsplash-240x300.jpg 240w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/y-s-stYB3RB0LCA-unsplash-600x750.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@santonii?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Y S</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/yosemite-national-park-bridalveil-fall?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Driving into the valley this first stop has a short paved walk, with minimal elevation gain, to the base of the falls that everyone can enjoy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Learn About Cultural Heritage</h2>

</p>
<p>Explore living history. Learn about the heritage of the indigenous groups who lived here from park rangers who can share about the culture and provide engaging demonstrations.</p>
</p>
<p>Explore the new Chinese Laundry Building in Yosemite Valley that highlights how Chinese labor helped expand public access to the Yosemite area.</p>
</p>
<p>Or learn about the impact that <a href="https://fb.watch/8rqZt8dTYW/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Buffalo Soldiers</a> had as some of the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/historyculture/buffalo-soldiers.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first park rangers</a> at Yosemite.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hiking</h2>

</p>
<p>With easy hikes or sturdier adventures for backpackers, you can get out into the crisp air on any one of these trails. Hike the Mist Trail, along the Merced River to Vernal Fall. Or take the Mirror Lake Trail by following the paved access road to the area of the lake with views of Half Dome.</p>
</p>
<p>Sentinel Dome hike is another spot with photogenic views that let you see Half Dome as the birds do!</p>

<p>Joshua Tree National Park is a unique place. It&#8217;s one of the most popular natural parks in California and attracts both tourists and locals alike to explore its beautiful trails, rock formations, and canyons. Joshua Tree offers something for everyone with some easy hiking trails that are perfect for families who want to get up close and personal with nature, or long, challenging hikes that will test even the most experienced hiker! So what are you waiting for? Read this guide before you pack up your gear (and maybe a few sandwiches) and head out!</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-992" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_075956.jpg" alt="" width="838" height="628" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_075956.jpg 726w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_075956-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_075956-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption>Cottonwood Entrance</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">About Joshua Tree National Park</h2>
</p>
<p>The story goes that the iconic yucca was named by Mormon pioneers, since the plants&#8217; outstretched branches reminded them of the Biblical character Joshua reaching out to God in prayer. They are protected in this national park as they are a vital part of the Mojave desert ecosystem.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>Afforded national park status in 1994 this area receives just under 2.5 million visitors a year. The southern California landscape has various unique rock formations, desert plant and animal life such as cholla cactus and big horn sheep. Heading here during a March to May window also allows you an opportunity to see beautiful wild flowers. A fall window will give you gentler weather.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-994" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_112933.jpg" alt="" width="840" height="629" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_112933.jpg 726w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_112933-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_112933-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption>View from Ryan Ranch Trail</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exploring Joshua Tree National Park &#8211; An Itinerary for One Perfect Day</h2>
</p>
<p>There are three Visitor Centers at the park so no matter where you stay you&#8217;re likely to be close to an entrance. We recommend starting at the Cottonwood Springs area just off Hwy 10 and ending at Indian Cove Nature Trail. If you are staying in Indio or Palm Springs Cottonwood is a great entrance choice and this itinerary will get you across the park to appreciate the majority of sites in one full day.</p>
</p>
<p>If you are staying in Twentynine Palms then Oasis Visitor Center and the North Entrance Station are your main points of entry. You can drive straight down Park Boulevard to Pinto Basin Road and pick up this itinerary at the Cholla Cactus Gardens.</p>
</p>
<p>If you plan to enter the park through Joshua Tree then we suggest you drive east on Hwy 62 first to hike the Indian Cove Nature Trail at sunrise. That will save you the most time in back tracking. You can do the rest of the itinerary from the Joshua Tree entrance station just in reverse order.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-995" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_082455.jpg" alt="" width="841" height="1122" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_082455.jpg 544w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_082455-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 841px) 100vw, 841px" /><figcaption>Cottonwood Spring Trail Oasis</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cottonwood Spring Visitor Center</h3>
</p>
<p>Staying in Palm Springs puts you the same distance from the Joshua Tree Visitor Center or the Cottonwood Visitor Center. You drive east on Hwy 10 and in just under an hour you&#8217;re hiking the Cottonwood Spring trail just south of the Visitor Center.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>From here you can also catch the 3-mile Mastodon Loop Trail or hike the longer 7.5-mile path to the Lost Palms Oasis. The trail to Lost Palms is strenuous so we recommend coming during cooler months to take this.</p>
</p>
<p>After exploring the cool oasis of palm trees and hanging out in the hard-to-find shade, head over to the Visitor Center if it&#8217;s open to pick up your America the Beautiful pass.</p>

</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cholla Cactus Garden</h3>
</p>
<p>Driving up Pinto Basin Road your next stop is the Cholla Cactus Garden. This is an easy quarter-mile loop through thousands of cholla cacti. This is an excellent spot to take sunrise photos or just enjoy a family-friendly hike through the unique field.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="544" height="726" class="wp-image-1004" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_091235.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_091235.jpg 544w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_091235-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px" /><figcaption>Cholla Cactus Garden</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Just make sure if you have little ones you let them know how to stay safe. The cholla look almost fluffy with all their white spines but that is nothing you want to touch!</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-997" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_103053.jpg" alt="" width="838" height="628" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_103053.jpg 726w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_103053-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_103053-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption>Landscape along Arch Trail</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Arch Rock</h3>
</p>
<p>Continue your drive along Pinto Basin Road and just past White Tank Campground you&#8217;ll see a parking area on the left side of the road. Park here at Twin Tanks and walk across the road to the Arch Rock trail. This is a 1.4-mile loop with a slight elevation gain of 100 ft.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>You get views of unique rock formations and the kids can enjoy a bit of climbing. The Arch Rock looked more like an elephant to me. To take photos you will have to be in front of the arch as there are very limited views from the back.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-998" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_104121.jpg" alt="" width="837" height="1117" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_104121.jpg 544w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_104121-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 837px) 100vw, 837px" /><figcaption>View from trail approaching Skull Rock</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Split Rock, Skull Rock, and Jumbo Rocks</h3>
</p>
<p>Just past the Belle campground, you&#8217;ll turn left to take Park Boulevard. Each one of the stops along this section of the drive, Split Rock, Skull Rock, and Jumbo Rocks have parking either in lots or along the road.</p>
</p>
<p>Split Rock offers a moderate loop hike of 2.5 miles. There is a bathroom in the parking area. Skull Rock has a 1.7-mile trail that also connects to the Jumbo Rocks parking area. If you don&#8217;t want to hike the whole trail there is parking along the road right in front of Skull Rock.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="436" class="wp-image-1001" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/pablo-heimplatz-iXp4yp8A9Tw-unsplash.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/pablo-heimplatz-iXp4yp8A9Tw-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/pablo-heimplatz-iXp4yp8A9Tw-unsplash-300x204.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/pablo-heimplatz-iXp4yp8A9Tw-unsplash-600x409.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@pabloheimplatz?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pablo Heimplatz</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/joshua-tree?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hall of Horrors</h3>
</p>
<p>If you want an opportunity for a bit of rock climbing this may be the stop for you. Follow the rock climbers to a narrow stretch opening between boulders. You&#8217;ll appreciate the shade! It&#8217;s a challenge to find but if you are willing to do a bit of climbing you&#8217;ll be rewarded with great views of the surrounding area.</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ryan Ranch</h3>
</p>
<p>Just after Oyster Bar, you&#8217;ll find parking on the left side of the road for Ryan Ranch Trail. There are also bathrooms here. This is where we choose to have lunch. It was still cool and we ate in the shade of our car.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>The trailhead is right next to the parking area. This one-mile trail with a slight elevation gain of 135 feet takes you to the remains of a historic adobe structure. If you are here during cooler months then you can tackle the Ryan Mountain hike. This popular trail gains a strenuous 1,050 ft in elevation and takes you to the summit. Once again we strongly recommend that you save the more strenuous hikes for cooler months.</p>
</p>

</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Keys View</h3>
</p>
<p>Back on the road, you can turn left to drive to Keys View. This is the spot in Joshua Tree to enjoy the sunset. There is a quarter-mile paved path here that affords you views of the surrounding area.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1000" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/gavin-spear-TXu4dwPh7dM-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="838" height="1133" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/gavin-spear-TXu4dwPh7dM-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/gavin-spear-TXu4dwPh7dM-unsplash-222x300.jpg 222w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/gavin-spear-TXu4dwPh7dM-unsplash-600x811.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@rustyspear11?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gavin Spear</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/joshua-tree?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hidden Valley and Barker Dam</h3>
</p>
<p>Keep right on Park Boulevard and you&#8217;ll see the turn-off for Hidden Valley. There is a picnic area here as well as an easy 1-mile loop trail.</p>
</p>
<p>Just past the Hidden Valley campground, you&#8217;ll connect with the Barker Dam trail. This 1.1-mile loop trail allows you another chance to explore the area&#8217;s pioneer and cattle ranching history.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1002" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_133953.jpg" alt="" width="838" height="628" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_133953.jpg 726w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_133953-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210530_133953-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption>View from Indian Cove Nature Trail</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Indian Cove</h3>
</p>
<p>Continue your drive on Park Boulevard to the West Entrance station. They were stopping drivers on the way out to have them show their park passes so have yours out and ready. Just past the Joshua Tree Visitor Center, the road intersects with Hwy 62.</p>
</p>
<p>Head east on Hwy 62 to Indian Cove Road. Turn right and head past the Ranger Station. The first trailhead you see is along the road and has signage. This is the Indian Cove Boy Scout Trail, not the Indian Cove Nature Trail. Keep driving. Drive past the campground. Follow the road to the right and once you start seeing actual campsites along the road you will know you are getting there.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>You will eventually see signs guiding you toward the nature trail. There is a parking lot at the trailhead as well as restrooms. At the trail head you can either go right or left. Each direction has three or so signs that explain key animal and plant life in the desert that helped the American Indians in this area survive.</p>
</p>
<p>This is a fantastic way to wrap up your day in the park. We were alone on the trail except for one jogger (Yes, you read that right. There was someone jogging the nature trail&#8230; at the end of May&#8230; in 100-degree weather. God bless.)</p>
</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1003" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/alex-kramarevsky-Syxb1kmNbDU-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="839" height="510" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/alex-kramarevsky-Syxb1kmNbDU-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/alex-kramarevsky-Syxb1kmNbDU-unsplash-300x182.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/alex-kramarevsky-Syxb1kmNbDU-unsplash-600x365.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@iamalexkramar?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alex Kramarevsky</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/joshua-tree?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What to Bring</h2>
</p>
<p>Be prepared for extreme weather at the park. We visited during Memorial Day weekend and it reached 96 by 11 AM. Check the weather before you go to make sure you are taking advantage of the cooler hours. The local weather reports included temperature updates by the hour and were incredibly helpful.</p>
</p>
<p>After considering the weather, you&#8217;ll need to pack the following:</p>
</p>
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Water &#8211; planning on being out for the day, then bring at minimum a gallon per person. Take into consideration the difficulty of hikes you want to tackle. If you are going to be very active then consider bringing more.</li>
<li>Food &#8211; there are no restaurants in the park so bring in food for snacks and lunch at the very least. There are numerous dining options outside the park in the surrounding towns.</li>
<li>Sun Protection &#8211; you&#8217;ll want a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses to help keep you comfortable and protected in the heat.</li>
<li>Closed Toe Hiking Shoes &#8211; stepping on a stray bit of cactus while wearing sandals is not how anyone wants to spend their time in the park so be sure your feet are protected</li>
<li>Headlamp &#8211; planning to enjoy the night sky, this is a great place to do it! Plan ahead by packing a headlamp with a red light option. This allows you to stay hands free while hiking safely in the dark and you won&#8217;t disturb others with glaring lights.</li>
<li>Camera/smart phone &#8211; you will definitely want to take pictures so bring your gear! Also you can download trail maps ahead of time as cell phone reception in some areas may be spotty.</li>
</ol>
</p>
<p>We hope you enjoy your day in Joshua Tree. Whether it&#8217;s a camping adventure, scenic drive or two hour hike to the top of Keys View Trail, we can&#8217;t wait to hear about what you experienced and how your <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/bryce-canyon-in-one-day/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">perfect one-day excursion</a> through Joshua Tree National Park went. <p>Channel Islands National Park is one of the most beautiful and scenic national parks in the United States. But it is also one of the least visited with less than 500,000 visitors a year. It&#8217;s a perfect spot for avoiding the crowds of revenge travelers swarming national parks this year. This post informs you on how to plan for and get the most out of your visit.</p>
</p>
<p>Channel Islands National Park is a unique destination in Southern California. Located off the coast of Ventura County, it&#8217;s home to five different islands that offer amazing opportunities for camping, hiking, marine life viewing, and kayaking.</p>
</p>
<p><a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/santa-rosa-island.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Santa Rosa Island</a></p>
</p>
<p><a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/anacapa.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anacapa Island</a></p>
</p>
<p><a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/santa-cruz-island.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Santa Cruz Island</a></p>
</p>
<p><a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/san-miguel-island.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Miguel Island</a></p>
</p>
<p><a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/santa-barbara-island.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Santa Barbara Island</a></p>
</p>
<p>Although the Channel Islands can be explored any time of year, there are some key factors you should consider when planning your trip.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-975" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/priya-karkare-Natural-Bridge-Near-Anacapa.jpg" alt="" width="838" height="471" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/priya-karkare-Natural-Bridge-Near-Anacapa.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/priya-karkare-Natural-Bridge-Near-Anacapa-300x169.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/priya-karkare-Natural-Bridge-Near-Anacapa-87x50.jpg 87w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/priya-karkare-Natural-Bridge-Near-Anacapa-600x338.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@priyakarkare19?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Priya Karkare</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/channel-islands?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Planning Ahead</h2>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How to Get There</h3>
</p>
<p>The 5 Channel Islands are only accessible via plane or boat. We recommend working through the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/island-transportation.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">park concessionaire groups</a> Channel Islands Aviation or Island Packers. You will find year-round options for access to the park in general though some islands do have specific times of the year when travel is easiest.</p>
</p>
<p>Planning for the cost to get to the islands is a consideration. Since flights through Channel Islands Aviation listed trips starting at $1200, we chose to go by boat. We worked with <a href="https://islandpackers.com/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Island Packers</a> for our day trip to Santa Cruz Island and paid for the extra tickets out to Painted Cave. This cost us less than $330 for a family of four. It would be slightly more expensive if you camped overnight.</p>
</p>
<p>Through Island Packers you have multiple excursion options. Do you want to visit more than one island? There is an option that allows you to see both Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands or if camping over multiple days you can find <a href="https://reserve.islandpackers.com/camper_shuttles.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Camper Island Hopping</a> options. Want to spend a few extra hours on the water appreciating the &#8220;California Galapagos&#8221;? You can catch interactions with dolphins, sea lions, and whales while traveling from Santa Cruz Island&#8217;s Prisoners Harbor to the Painted Cave for just another $19 per person beyond your $63 round trip ticket price. You&#8217;ll read more about this option later in the post.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>Here are the steps you will follow to get tickets.</p>
</p>
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Choose Your Island(s) &#8211; use the links above to research what each of the islands has to offer. Then choose the island that best fits your ideal. When ready head to the <a href="https://reserve.islandpackers.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Island Packers website</a> to make your reservation.</li>
<li>Pick Your Date &#8211; once you click on a date and time you&#8217;ll see the fees for either a day trip or camper fare. Click Add to Itinerary.</li>
<li>If Camping &#8211; open a second window in your browser for <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Recreation.gov</a> to make sure you can reserve a campsite for the dates you want to be on the island. For example, on Santa Cruz Island you can camp at Del Norte Backcountry or Scorpion. The campsite you are able to reserve will determine which boat trip you take as those are two different harbors. You can book up to six months in advance. Make sure you have a place to sleep before you buy your boat tickets!</li>
<li>Choose your Return &#8211; back at the Island Packers website, choose your return date and time. Select the number of people in your group and click next to pay.</li>
</ol>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What to Bring</h3>
</p>
<p>Plan to bring your own food and drinks with you. Pack a picnic lunch and plenty of snacks if day tripping. Use the brown fox boxes at your campground to store food if spending the night. The foxes on the island are cute but not shy at all about taking food. There are no concessions or gear rental on the islands to replace anything lost or forgotten. Some campgrounds do not have drinkable water either so be sure to check ahead of time if spending the night.</p>
</p>
<p>Wear layers. We were absolutely freezing on the boat and were dressed in sweats, with layers under our sweatshirts. The group seated next to us were in shorts, poor things, and let me just say chicken skin is not fun no matter what age you are!</p>
</p>
</p>
<p>That ocean wind is cutting and you will benefit from having a high-quality jacket that you can pack away while hiking. We also recommend a hat with a strap around your neck or the wind will easily whip it away. Pack sunglasses and sunscreen or spray down before you leave the harbor.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Where to Sit on the Boat</h3>
</p>
<p>Yes, this is actually a consideration. Do you want to be warm and cozy? Then the bottom deck inside is for you. Worried about getting seasick? Our captain mentioned the back of the boat outside was the smoothest ride. Want to see the marine life? Best bet is to sit top deck outside.</p>
</p>
<p>Minus a couple of people who rushed in front of us to grab photos of a pod of dolphins, we enjoyed the views from our top deck spot. Some people braved the strong winds to be right out on the front upper deck for the best views. We changed to the inside bottom deck for the ride home.</p>
</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Photography</h3>
</p>
<p>The wind and choppy seas are a consideration while taking photos. The boat captain recommended keeping one hand on a railing at all times if standing up during our trip across the channel. I would strongly recommend a camera strap if you imagine yourself standing during the trip to take photos of marine life.</p>
</p>
<p>The lower decks, depending on what side you are on can experience significant sea spray. So bring something to protect your camera from that possibility. You can bring microfiber cloths or snag a shower cap from your hotel in a pinch. If using your cell phone you may want to consider a wrist strap or a waterproof case with a lanyard.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Marine Life Viewing</h2>
</p>
<p>The boat ride from the mainland to Santa Cruz Island is scheduled to be 90 minutes long but can take longer as they slow for encounters with marine life. This trip gives you the opportunity to see a multitude of marine life. We saw the largest pod of dolphins I&#8217;ve ever come across. There must have been thousands. We also enjoyed seeing sea lions on our way out of the harbor.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-986" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210529_085435.jpg" alt="" width="841" height="1122" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210529_085435.jpg 544w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210529_085435-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 841px) 100vw, 841px" /><figcaption>Sea lions on the way out of Ventura Harbor</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Once docked at Prisoners Harbor the captain will let off a small group of hikers and campers and then take you out to Painted Cave if you&#8217;ve purchased the extra ticket. You will enjoy another 30 minutes of boat travel over to one of the largest sea caves in the world.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>The cave itself was beautiful and the size was amazing as our 60-plus foot boat was able to enter it with ease and then gently back out again. The trip also afforded us an opportunity to see a small group of whales who were feeding in the area.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-978" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/marie-dehayes-fxzm6MAJvJQ-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="841" height="561" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/marie-dehayes-fxzm6MAJvJQ-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/marie-dehayes-fxzm6MAJvJQ-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/marie-dehayes-fxzm6MAJvJQ-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 841px) 100vw, 841px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@mariedehayes?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marie Dehayes</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/humpback-whale?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>The boat captain and first mate were able to slow the boat and circle the area. They narrated the whales&#8217; coordinated efforts to create bubble nets and explained how other sea life such as sea lions, dolphins, and birds would interact with the whales in order to share in the fish feast. We were even able to see one whale breaching the water with its mouth still open!</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-984" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210529_133134.jpg" alt="" width="839" height="630" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210529_133134.jpg 605w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210529_133134-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/20210529_133134-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px" /><figcaption>View from Del Norte trail back to Prisoners Harbor</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hiking</h2>
</p>
<p>If you include a side trip to another island or out to Painted Cave as we did, this will reduce your time to hike. But each option will still give you at least one or two hours to explore. If you plan to camp overnight then you&#8217;ve added many more hours that you can get out on the trails.</p>
</p>
<p>Once you get off the boat and receive your mandatory introduction to the area with the park rangers you can head out. Each island has <a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/hiking.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unique hiking opportunities</a>. The rangers will highlight which trails are available to you and when to be back at the dock.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>Plan to wear comfortable hiking boots or trail shoes. Some paths are not well posted and cell phone reception can be spotty so be sure to have a paper map with you or a map already downloaded to your phone.</p>
</p>
<p>On Santa Cruz island just next to Prisoners Harbor, we had the Pelican Bay trail available if we signed a waiver as well as the Del Norte trail. Each had views of the coastline and great spots to sit with a picnic lunch.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-979" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/andrew-piankoff-0uckcGoIKLg-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="839" height="558" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/andrew-piankoff-0uckcGoIKLg-unsplash.jpg 640w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/andrew-piankoff-0uckcGoIKLg-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/andrew-piankoff-0uckcGoIKLg-unsplash-600x399.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@piankoff?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Piankoff</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/island-camping?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Camping</h2>
</p>
<p>If planning to <a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/camping.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">camp on the islands</a> Island Packers will have you skip to the front of the line to drop off your gear on the boat. Be ready to climb up and down a ladder with your gear when moving from the boat to the island dock.</p>
</p>
<p>You want to have all your gear (e.g., tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag, clothing, food, and water) meet the weight limits so check with your transportation&#8217;s website for weight limits before packing up. The wind is a factor and it can get cold at night so plan for gear that helps you stay warm.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>If you have the desire and/or experience <a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/backcountry-camping.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">backcountry camping</a> is also available on Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands.</p>
</p>

</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Kayaking and Snorkeling</h2>
</p>
<p>You can explore the islands from more than just the trails! If your idea of fun includes getting in the water then be sure to plan for a visit to Santa Cruz lsland and working with the <a href="https://www.sbadventureco.com/adventures/channel-islands/#Sea-Cave-Kayaking" target="_blank" rel="noopener">park concessionaire</a> to schedule a kayaking tour of the sea caves or some snorkeling time.</p>
</p>
<p>If you plan to bring your own kayak and/or snorkeling gear you can work with your transportation company to make sure you can bring your gear with you. Check out the<a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/kayaking.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> national park website</a> for tips on safety considerations.</p>

</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tide Pools and Bird watching</h2>
</p>
<p>Marine life viewing isn&#8217;t restricted to just being on a boat. If you&#8217;d like to explore tide pools then you need to check out Smuggler&#8217;s Cove on Santa Cruz Island, or if going to another island then check the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/tidepooling.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Channel Islands national park website</a> for tips on where to get the best access.</p>
</p>
<p>These islands serve as a protected habitat for many sea birds. The Island Sea Jay is a special species only found on these islands. You may even spot a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/chis/learn/nature/bald-eagles.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bald eagle</a> here as they were reintroduced in the early 2000s.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>You have a lot to consider when packing for your adventure on these islands. The weather is different, the wildlife and natural hazards are unique, and you need to be aware of park rules and regulations that may not apply in other areas. With all these things taken into consideration, it’s important that you are prepared before leaving home so you can enjoy every moment without worrying about what could go wrong or if you forgot something important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Big Sur</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="754" height="613" class="wp-image-527" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/20191117_213425.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/20191117_213425.jpg 754w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/20191117_213425-300x244.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/20191117_213425-600x488.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px" /><figcaption>McWay Falls, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park</h3>
</p>
<p>Base yourself in the quintessential Central Coast spot, Pacific Grove. From here you&#8217;re ideally set up to spend a day exploring the Big Sur coastline. Stop at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and enjoy one of the most photographed spots in the world. McWay Falls is accessed on Falls Trail, just past the entrance to the park. Pay the day-use fee and park inside or find parking along the road (as long as you are ok with hugging the hillside on a two-lane highway). The trail takes you through a short tunnel under Hwy 1 then hike your way up a slight grade to the top of the bluff. Take your pick of spots along the fence to get the perfect photo of this iconic Big Sur landscape. Before you move on down the road, don&#8217;t forget to take some time to just appreciate the timelessness of that graceful dive of water down to the beach.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Andrew Molera State Park</h3>
</p>
<p>You shouldn&#8217;t stop there. If you are up for more must-see Big Sur spots keep going to Andrew Molera State Park. At just under 5,000 acres this is the largest state park on the Big Sur coastline. Here you can enjoy coastal views or wooded areas. Prefer to hit the beach? Take one of the trails down to the shore from Bluff Trail and dip your toes in the Pacific.</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Pfeiffer Beach</h3>
</p>
<p>When we took this trip those two stops took up most of the day because we let the boys play at the beach and the Andrew Molera hikes were gorgeous! So lots of stops for photos. But if you&#8217;d like to keep heading south you can also check out Pfeiffer Beach. Beware that Pfeiffer Beach can be a little tough to find for first-timers as there is little signage. You may not see the yellow &#8220;Narrow Road&#8221; sign until you pass it so turn around as soon as it&#8217;s safe to do so. Take a two-mile drive on Sycamore Canyon Road from Hwy 1 toward the coast.</p>
</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll have to pay $12 for a day-use pass that includes parking. Cash is prefered, but credit is accepted with an additional charge. If it&#8217;s full you&#8217;ll need to wait or turn back. But if catching memorable Big Sur sites is your goal then you may find the hassle worth it. Try to come in the fall or winter months at sunset to catch the best chance of no wait for parking. For your efforts, you can have another amazing &#8220;only in Big Sur&#8221; experience as the sun rays pass through the Keyhole Rock.</p>
</p>
<p>Eating and gas along Big Sur are expensive so fill up before you leave and bring a picnic with you. Plan for dinner back in Pacific Grove or the surrounding area before you call it a night. The next day can be followed by exploring Monterey/Carmel. Check out our article on how to get the most out of a stay in this area, including the best places to eat by clicking <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/top-10-things-to-do-in-monterey-carmel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>

<p>A stay at the Pacific Grove Inn can start at $89 (for 1 bed) to $175 (3 beds). Your stay won&#8217;t break the bank and you are guaranteed amazing experiences each day. </p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Golden Gate Bridge</h2>
</p>
<p>Drive from Monterey only 2 hours north to San Francisco. Stay at the Comfort Inn just over a mile from downtown starting at $98 (1 bed) to $159 (2 beds). We recommend you spend at least one night in the city so you can explore the Golden Gate Bridge and the unique city views. Take a walk or bike across this iconic bridge, a nationally recognized symbol of the west coast since construction finished in 1937. Or hike the Fort Point area for gorgeous photo opportunities. Afterward, be sure to treat yourself to ice cream from Mitchell&#8217;s. You can order for pick up or have it delivered to your hotel. If you are looking for a longer stay in the city check out our list of things you can do <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/things-you-can-still-do-in-san-francisco/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Redwood National and State Parks</h2>
</p>
<p>From the city, it is a six-hour drive all the way up to Crescent City if you&#8217;d like to tackle this park from north to south. Or you can drive to Eureka in 4 and a half hours, and spend your time in the redwoods gradually heading north with hikes and beach visits along the way. As our ultimate destination was Oregon, we chose to explore from south to north.</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Go Clamming at Clam Beach</h3>
</p>
<p>Stop just north of McKinleyville at Clam Beach for a great place to get out, stretch your legs and let the kiddos play. The beach is named for the razor clams that populate the sand so if you like to dig for your next meal then this is your place! The last time I checked your limit is 20 per person. Grab your fishing license (yes, you read that right), wait for low tide, and get ready to catch your dinner! There is also a day-use area and campground. Fires on the beach and in the campground area are permitted. If you&#8217;re unsure of how to clean clams check out this <a href="https://www.allrecipes.com/article/how-to-clean-clams/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guide</a>. My husband also recommends the kids gently kick the bucket filled with fresh water and clams every so often, to encourage the clams to spit out more sand. You are guaranteed a memorable way to introduce your kiddos to homemade clam chowder!</p>
</p>
<p>If you are not planning to stay at the campground you can stay two nights at the Holiday Inn Express in a room with kitchen amenities for just under $300 or an entire vacation home with three rooms for just under $500. Check the latest availability <a href="https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?aid=304142&amp;label=gen173nr-1DCAEoggI46AdIM1gEaIkCiAEBmAExuAEXyAEM2AED6AEB-AECiAIBqAIDuALtv-T-BcACAdICJDNlODM2N2Q3LWRhODYtNDNlYy04MTgyLWY3YWZiYTE0N2E0ZNgCBOACAQ&amp;sid=aaa0c04142bcb13974523750f89c9887&amp;tmpl=searchresults&amp;ac_click_type=b&amp;ac_position=0&amp;age=12&amp;age=14&amp;checkin_month=1&amp;checkin_monthday=18&amp;checkin_year=2021&amp;checkout_month=1&amp;checkout_monthday=20&amp;checkout_year=2021&amp;city=20015036&amp;class_interval=1&amp;dest_id=20014373&amp;dest_type=city&amp;dtdisc=0&amp;from_sf=1&amp;group_adults=2&amp;group_children=2&amp;inac=0&amp;index_postcard=0&amp;label_click=undef&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;postcard=0&amp;raw_dest_type=city&amp;req_age=14&amp;req_age=14&amp;room1=A%2CA%2C12%2C14&amp;sb_price_type=total&amp;search_selected=1&amp;shw_aparth=1&amp;slp_r_match=0&amp;src=searchresults&amp;srpvid=a18892119b5b0135&amp;ss=McKinleyville%2C%20California%2C%20United%20States&amp;ss_all=0&amp;ss_raw=McKinleyvi&amp;ssb=empty&amp;sshis=0&amp;ssne=Pacific%20Grove&amp;ssne_untouched=Pacific%20Grove&amp;top_ufis=1&amp;nflt=roomfacility%3D999%3B&amp;rsf=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Take a side trip to Patrick&#8217;s Point State Park</h3>
</p>
<p>From that one-of-a-kind experience, you can continue north to just outside of Trinidad for a romp in Patrick&#8217;s Point State Park redwoods. We think you&#8217;ll find like we did, that this park is a joy with both a chance to roam in the forest on the east side of the highway and then take trails down to the coastline.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Redwoods</h3>
</p>
<p>Less than 20 miles from Patrick&#8217;s Point, Redwood National Park is an amazing example of collaboration between both state and national park systems. So take the time if you have it to explore it all. Entrance to the park is free so there are no entrance stations. If you have limited time as we did with only one day to spend in the area there are some must-dos! You must take a drive on Bald Hills Road to Lady Bird Johnson Grove. It was Lady Bird Johnson, wife of President Lyndon B Johnson, that helped to dedicate this park in 1968. Just past the town of Orick, you&#8217;ll see a large sign marking the turn-off to the 31-mile scenic drive.</p>
</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Prairie Creek State Park</h3>
</p>
<p>From the grove, you might enjoy another essential viewing spot in the area. Head north on Bald Hill Road toward Prairie Creek Camp Road until you can rejoin Hwy 101. Look for signs to Prairie Creek State Park via the Newton B. Drury Scenic Pkwy. If you have a national parks pass it is good here due to their partnership with Redwoods National Park. This state park alone could occupy a family for at least two days so if you have the time to spend we highly recommend taking a few of the trails. Tip &#8211; if you are traveling here in the winter, the first Saturday of each winter month the park is closed to traffic. They are focused on increasing the walkability of this beautiful park. So take advantage of the chance to walk through approximately ten miles of jaw-dropping scenery. You can also bring pets on a leash.</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gold Bluffs Beach/Fern Canyon</h3>
</p>
<p>If this is a short stay for you then take the Prairie Creek Trail and hopefully catch a glimpse of the giant elk that call the area home. With a bit more time you can drive about 25 minutes via Davison Road to walk the .7-mile loop from Gold Bluffs Beach to Fern Canyon. Your entrance fee to drive Gold Bluffs/Fern Canyon will be waived if you have the <a href="https://travelwithintention.com/bryce-canyon-in-one-day/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">national parks pass</a>. From this area, you and the family can imagine yourselves in one of the many scenes from Lost World: Jurassic Park that was filmed here.</p>
</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Before you head home&#8230;</h3>
</p>
<p>From there you can continue your drive up to Crescent City and eat at the Chart Room Restaurant as we did. Nothing fancy to look at just a local hangout on the wharf. But there was tasty food for everyone and the prices were reasonable. If you choose to do the same you&#8217;re likely to wrap up the day full and happy.</p>

<p>My happiest travel memories are always connected to water. Lakes, rivers, or the rush of waves on the coastline bring me peace like no other. Just the sound of a waterfall can detoxify my mind. If my husband wants me to go on an errand with him that he knows will make my eyes roll he ends the request with &#8220;and we can take a walk on the beach after.&#8221; It gets me every time. If you are seeking that same zen, the Central Coast of California offers a water-centric base. A visit to Monterey/Carmel area offers that zen in so many ways. I&#8217;ve listed here my Top 10 ways to enjoy the area.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit Point Lobos State Natural Reserve</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="726" height="544" class="wp-image-507" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201105_164510-1.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201105_164510-1.jpg 726w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201105_164510-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201105_164510-1-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px" /><figcaption>Cypress Grove Trail view</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>If you talk to a local while in the area chances are they&#8217;ve been coming to this Natural Reserve since they were kids. In making memories for our own kiddos, we try to take a different trail each time we visit this iconic park and each time it becomes our new favorite. You can catch an available parking spot at the pull-out areas just north and south of the entrance. To save yourself from walking along the busy highway, take the trail that runs parallel to Hwy. 1 on the west side to get to the entrance. Or if you drive in passenger cars are $10. But finding a spot can be tricky so arrive early or come late to avoid the most popular times of the day.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit Garrapata State Park</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="594" height="792" class="wp-image-508" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ronan-furuta-N0p9ROUsDA8-unsplash.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ronan-furuta-N0p9ROUsDA8-unsplash.jpg 594w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ronan-furuta-N0p9ROUsDA8-unsplash-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@ronan18?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ronan Furuta</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Less than 20 minutes south of Carmel you&#8217;ll find trails that hug the coast on the west side of Hwy. 1. A ridge trail with coastal views of birds, marine life and wildflowers is the 1.8-mile loop of Soberanes Point Trail. To find parking and trail access watch for numbered signs along Hwy. 1. Soberanes Point Trail can be accessed from Gate 8, 9, and 10.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">17 Mile Drive</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="527" height="837" class="wp-image-509" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/mana5280-MVn0VMSTcV8-unsplash.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/mana5280-MVn0VMSTcV8-unsplash.jpg 527w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/mana5280-MVn0VMSTcV8-unsplash-189x300.jpg 189w" sizes="(max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@mana5280?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mana5280</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>A road that is so famous you have to pay to drive it may not be your idea of inner peace but let me show you the best way to enjoy the Monterey Peninsula icon that is 17 Mile Drive. You&#8217;ll see signage leading from the Monterey airport to the south entrance off Hwy. 1. But insiders know the best way to enjoy this drive is from Pacific Grove. Coming from the Pacific Grove north gate you&#8217;ll always be on the right side of the road for pullouts and coastal views will stay front and center. Plan to set aside at least two hours of leisurely driving on a road shared with bicyclists, joggers, and other site seers. Come in on Sunset Drive and San Antonio Avenue will have the toll booth. If that $10.50 gate fee is a point of contention for you there is a little secret about that. Pebble Beach Resorts will reimburse you that fee when you spend $35 at any of their properties, excluding Pebble Beach Market. And that leads me to my next tip.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t miss the bagpipes. You might not have had the Scottish Highlands on your mind when coming to the Central Coast but don&#8217;t pass up the opportunity to stop by Inn at Spanish Bay while you are on the drive. Come in close to sunset to catch the bagpiper dressed in full Scottish Highlander regalia. They play nightly, rain or shine. So stoke those Outlander fantasies, grab a cocktail, and appetizers, and head out to the patio fire pit to listen to this unique Pebble Beach experience. Bring your gate receipt to get that amount taken from your dining bill. During the winter months, the bagpiper crosses the green from 4:30 &#8211; 5:15 and daylight savings time starts a bit later, from 5:45 to 6:30. The event used to begin outside STICKS which is now closed. Currently, you will want to be dining at Roy&#8217;s to enjoy the experience. I&#8217;ve posted a link to their menu <a href="https://www.pebblebeach.com/dining/roys-at-pebble-beach/our-menu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. Watch the sun set on another beautiful day with this unique 17 Mile Drive experience.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Eat Clam Chowder and Spot a Whale at Fisherman&#8217;s Wharf</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="636" height="954" class="wp-image-510" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/meritt-thomas-xZtMFn1FE8-unsplash-1.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/meritt-thomas-xZtMFn1FE8-unsplash-1.jpg 636w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/meritt-thomas-xZtMFn1FE8-unsplash-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/meritt-thomas-xZtMFn1FE8-unsplash-1-600x900.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@merittthomas?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Meritt Thomas</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>Speaking of food, you haven&#8217;t really been to Monterey unless you&#8217;ve come to Fisherman&#8217;s Wharf. The row of colorful restaurants and shops jutting out into the bay shouldn&#8217;t be missed. You can get a cup of clam chowder to go from any one of the numerous restaurants. Our favorites are Old Fisherman&#8217;s Grotto and their sister restaurant Scales. We like to know that by visiting them during this time we are helping support a local group that cares about its employees. During the pandemic, owners partnered with their executive chef to prioritize hot meals for each of their employees as well as the homeless population in the area.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-newsletter-workbook" href="#cb65fd8cd1"><span class='mb-text'>Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter &amp; BONUS Workbook</span></a></p>
</p>
<p>You can also catch a whale-watching tour from the wharf year-round. The tour companies have prioritized safety measures with strict cleaning protocols and reduced capacity on boats so social distancing can be easily observed. These types of outdoor activities and the locals that make them possible let you see part of what makes the Monterey Bay area so amazing.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Adventure Travel</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="764" height="429" class="wp-image-511" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/jl-lacar-SpN_Jiv3txk-unsplash.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/jl-lacar-SpN_Jiv3txk-unsplash.jpg 764w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/jl-lacar-SpN_Jiv3txk-unsplash-300x168.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/jl-lacar-SpN_Jiv3txk-unsplash-87x50.jpg 87w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/jl-lacar-SpN_Jiv3txk-unsplash-600x337.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@jl_lacar?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">JL Lacar</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>If you thought a weekend in Monterey/Carmel had to be tame, think again. Skydive Monterey Bay is here to help you get the adrenaline rush you crave. My husband did this to celebrate his 27th birthday and loved it. For me, this isn&#8217;t a question I need answered. But if you want unparalleled views of the coast as you soar toward it from 18,000 feet elevation, they can take you out starting at just $179.</p>
</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve already rated H3 or P3 with the USHGPA you can hang glide from Marina State Beach. The local club Coastal Condors has a website <a href="http://www.coastalcondors.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> that introduces you to site rules, and local wildlife protection considerations and allows you to sign in for your flight.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Check out the Animals</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="682" height="1024" class="wp-image-514" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/thula-na-8h3jqhYLZEw-unsplash-682x1024.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/thula-na-8h3jqhYLZEw-unsplash-682x1024.jpg 682w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/thula-na-8h3jqhYLZEw-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/thula-na-8h3jqhYLZEw-unsplash-600x900.jpg 600w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/thula-na-8h3jqhYLZEw-unsplash.jpg 719w" sizes="(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></figure>
</p>
<p>As long as you are planning to enter 17 Mile Drive from Pacific Grove you might as well head over early so you can enter the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. From October to February the migrating monarchs cluster together in the eucalyptus trees in such numbers that at first glance you&#8217;ll think they are leaves. In order to honor current safety measures the telescopes and docents are unavailable so bring your own binoculars to see these beauties up close.</p>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="780" height="520" class="wp-image-515" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tom-podmore-bd59zNiuhgA-unsplash.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tom-podmore-bd59zNiuhgA-unsplash.jpg 780w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tom-podmore-bd59zNiuhgA-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tom-podmore-bd59zNiuhgA-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tom-podmore-bd59zNiuhgA-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@tompodmore86?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tom Podmore</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/s/photos/lions?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsplash</a></figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>If you&#8217;d like something a bit wilder, you can take the family over to the Monterey Zoo. From Monterey, you&#8217;ll take Hwy 68 inland toward Salinas to River Road. There you can visit elephants, lions, tigers and more! You can even book a room at the Vision Quest Ranch Bed and Breakfast on-site in order to schedule breakfast with elephants or evening feeding time with the big cats. To find out more about how to make your stay unlike any other click <a href="https://www.visionquestranch.com/html/_b-b_suites_-_faq.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Enjoy a Day at the Beach</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="766" height="575" class="wp-image-512" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201012_172407.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201012_172407.jpg 766w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201012_172407-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201012_172407-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px" /><figcaption>Loving a Day at the Beach</figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>You have no shortage of beaches to enjoy when you come to the Monterey/Carmel area. But Carmel Beach is a favorite. At the end of Ocean Avenue, you&#8217;ll find the dog-friendly stretch of sand. There is a relatively small parking lot right by a beach entry point but you can also find free parking along any one of the side streets. If parking along the Scenic Pathway you can begin with a walk along the jogger-friendly strip and then take any one of the stairways down to the beach. But if you enter the beach from the parking lot make note of the size of that sand dune you are walking down. You may not think much of it when headed down to the beautiful beach that hugs the side of Pebble Beach Golf Course but you need to save your energy to walk back up it when your day at the beach is done!</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hit Up a Farmers Market</h2>
</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="772" height="536" class="wp-image-513" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/anne-preble-SAPvKo12dQE-unsplash.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/anne-preble-SAPvKo12dQE-unsplash.jpg 772w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/anne-preble-SAPvKo12dQE-unsplash-300x208.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/anne-preble-SAPvKo12dQE-unsplash-768x533.jpg 768w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/anne-preble-SAPvKo12dQE-unsplash-600x417.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@annepreble?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anne Preble</a> </figcaption></figure>
</p>
<p>There is a farmers market in Monterey County almost every day of the week. These outdoor spaces are a great way to contribute to the local farmers/artisans. And shopping from the people who picked the food themselves means fewer hands between you and the product. The organizers do a good job ensuring safety. The last Farmers Market I went to had a supervised station for you to leave your drink so you would never have to remove your mask while shopping. You just pick up your drink on the way out. Check out the latest updates on Farmers Market schedules and current safety guidelines <a href="https://www.seemonterey.com/food-wine/farmers-markets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Eat Cioppino at Phil&#8217;s Fish Market</h2>
</p>

<p>Less than 25 minutes north of Monterey sits one of the most enjoyable meals you will ever have. Take a drive to Phil&#8217;s Fish Market in Castroville and you won&#8217;t regret it. Enjoy the ambiance of the old one-room school house building for indoor dining, or if the weather allows enjoy the outdoor patio. Take-out options are available from the food truck set up just outside. If you&#8217;re not sure about the drive check out Food Network episodes of Throw Down with Bobby Flay and Road Tasted to convince you. This is one of the best places to eat in the area and you can check out their menu <a href="https://philsfishmarket.com/menu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Go Wine Tasting in Carmel Valley</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" class="wp-image-517" src="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tim-mossholder-bRw46I773E4-unsplash-1024x683.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tim-mossholder-bRw46I773E4-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tim-mossholder-bRw46I773E4-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tim-mossholder-bRw46I773E4-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tim-mossholder-bRw46I773E4-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w, https://travelwithintention.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/tim-mossholder-bRw46I773E4-unsplash.jpg 1188w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@timmossholder?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tim Mossholder</a> </figcaption></figure>

<p>You can spend a whole day exploring Carmel Valley&#8217;s offerings. Kick off your day with breakfast at From Scratch on the lower level of the Carmel Barnyard. They have patio seating or take-out. They serve breakfast all day so don&#8217;t worry if you get a late start. You can check out their menu <a href="https://fromscratchrestaurant.com/menu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
</p>
<p>From there you&#8217;ll take Carmel Valley Road less than 12 miles down, past Laureles Grade, to Carmel Valley. There are more than ten different wineries represented here and those with outdoor patio seating are still open. Hours have been adjusted and it is strongly suggested that you call ahead to make sure your entry is timed in the best interest of safety protocols. If you have the whole family with you, check to see if underaged members of your tribe are allowed at a particular spot or if they have activities to keep kiddos occupied. If not, you can plan ahead to have books or games to keep them busy while you enjoy a tasting. One of my favorite websites for this area is <a href="https://www.seemonterey.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seemonterey.com</a>. They have a page dedicated just to wine tasting in Monterey County which you can check out <a href="https://www.seemonterey.com/food-wine/wineries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
</p>
<p>No matter which of these activities you choose to take on during your stay, you will walk away feeling indulged and refreshed. Most importantly, Monterey and its surrounding area will make you want to return. So enjoy your stay and let us know what your favorite activities were when you came. You can share what you&#8217;re planning for when you come back!</p>
