The Cosmopolitan (which also hosts my favorite buffet, the Wicked Spoon) transforms one of its pool areas into an ice rink and hosts a “Date Skate” event on Fridays and Saturdays starting mid-November.

The city’s Christmas decorations, especially on the Las Vegas Strip, are a sight to behold. And I’m not just talking about twinkling lights. This is a city that knows how to put on a show! So expect to have multiple Christmas-themed events available, think Immersive Nutcracker or a winter wonderland-themed Tournament of Kings. Or a holiday maze at Enchant on the Strip and a drive-through holiday light show called Glittering Lights with a live nativity scene at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Finally, if you’re a foodie, be sure not to miss the Great Las Vegas Taco Festival or the Food Truck Festival. The Taco Festival event showcases a variety of delicious tacos from different vendors on Nov 5th – 7th. And the Food Truck Festival is on the 2nd of November. Best Snorkeling Spots in Maui

One of the most popular places for snorkeling in Maui is the Molokini Crater. This unique volcanic formation off the coast provides a stunning backdrop for your underwater adventures. Accessible only by boat tour, Molokini Crater is a popular place for snorkelers and scuba divers alike,  that’s home to some of the most beautiful coral reefs and tropical fish in the area. With its clear water and calm waters, you can easily spot Moorish idols, yellow tangs, and even the rare black triggerfish.

Honolua Bay, a Marine Life Conservation District, is another great place to snorkel. The bay is known for its shallow reefs and rocky outcroppings, providing a habitat for a wide range of sea creatures. Regardless of your skill level, you’ll find Honolua Bay a welcoming snorkel site, with its calm waters and vibrant marine life.

Turtle Town, located at Maluaka Beach, lives up to its name. Here, you have a high chance of spotting the majestic Hawaiian green sea turtles. The sandy beach provides easy access to the warm waters, which are teeming with abundant coral species. The sight of these gentle giants grazing on the seafloor is a sight you won’t easily forget.

Kapalua Bay is another one of Maui’s best beaches for snorkeling. Known for its calm waters, beautiful coral reefs, and diverse marine life, it’s a popular location for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. The west Maui Bay also provides convenient public restrooms and a parking lot, ensuring a comfortable experience for all visitors.

Black Rock, situated at the northern end of Kaanapali Beach, is a local favorite and is considered a great spot for snorkeling. The clear water and deep water sections offer a chance to encounter various sea creatures, from small fish to colorful butterflyfish. The sandy beach and easy access make it a preferred choice for families and first-time snorkelers. We thought it was one of the best spots we snorkeled on the island when we visited. 

Kahekili Beach Park, also known as Airport Beach, is another snorkeling gem on the west coast of Maui. This park is characterized by its shallow water and rocky areas, perfect for spotting small schools of tropical fish. During the winter months, you might even catch a glimpse of humpback whales passing by.

Lastly, for more experienced snorkelers, Ahihi Bay and La Perouse Bay on Maui’s south shore are must-visits. The strong currents at Ahihi Bay make for an exciting snorkeling experience at high tide as long as you stay in the bay, where you can encounter beautiful fish around the rocky outcrops. Be exceptionally careful to avoid intruding on coral during low tide and use the concrete to get out into the deeper water. During high tide, you have enough clearance to snorkel over the coral. Or get up early when the waves are calm and there is less wind to enjoy Makena Beach. With the right conditions, this is also a great spot, especially known for its vibrant reef fish and beautiful coral species.

Tropical Fish and Sea Creatures to Spot

With a snorkel and fins at the ready, let’s take a deep dive into the dazzling array of tropical fish and sea creatures you can spot in the warm waters of Maui.

One of the most captivating sights you’ll encounter is the Hawaiian green sea turtle. One of the best places they are often spotted is at Turtle Town, where the sandy beach provides easy access to their underwater world. The green sea turtle is easily recognizable by its large size and the distinctive pattern of black stripes and patches on the side of its body. If you’re lucky, you might spot them in small cove areas around rocky outcroppings.

Next up, is the Moorish Idol, a beautiful fish that’s easily recognizable due to its unique dorsal fin and distinctive black stripes. Often found swimming in small schools around the rocky outcrops of Molokini Crater, the Moorish Idol is a sight to behold.

Another tropical fish that will catch your eye with its bright yellow color and white spots is the Yellow Tang. Convict Tang, with its black spot, is also a common sight. They are mostly seen in shallow reefs, grazing on the coral polyps and algae that form their diet.

Butterfly fish are another highlight of the Hawaiian waters, with their white stripes and black bands making them easy to spot. Two types, in particular, the Raccoon Butterflyfish and Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish, are local favorites. Look for these beautiful fish around coral gardens and rocky outcroppings.

Make sure to bring a jacket, as it can get chilly at this elevation! At the time of writing, vehicles needed to use the gate off Portola Drive to gain access. If you arrive here before sunset and are interested in a bit of exercise, you can hike the entire 2.1-mile out-and-back trail. Access to the trail can be made from multiple entry points along Twin Peaks Blvd.

Grand View Park

Take the Moraga Mural Steps up to Grand View Park for a quintessential San Francisco experience. Grandview Park is a lesser-known gem that boasts some of the most stunning views of San Francisco. With its vibrant mosaic staircase and lush foliage, this park offers a serene and picturesque atmosphere for you to enjoy the cityscape at night.

Standing at attention at the top of Telegraph Hill in Pioneer Park, Coit Tower is an iconic San Francisco landmark that offers a fantastic view of the city. You can climb steps or take the elevator to the top for 365-degree views of the city. But since they close at 5 or 6 PM depending on the time of the year, this isn’t your spot to see the city lit up at night. Rather in the evening, Coit Tower becomes the star of the show. At night, the illuminated tower serves as a beacon, yet another landmark that adds to the stunning vistas of the bay and the surrounding neighborhoods.

And don’t limit yourself to just the tower! The surrounding area of Telegraph Hill also offers a wealth of vantage points for admiring the city’s nighttime beauty. Wander the winding streets and enjoy unique perspectives of the skyline, the bay, and even Alcatraz Island.

Nob Hill

This fantastic neighborhood offers an array of classic San Francisco locations such as Grace Cathedral and the Fairmont Hotel famous for its elaborately decorated lobby and the Tonga Room. But for amazing views, you have a few options. For the brave of heart, you can drive the incredibly steep California Street and catch iconic views of the city from side streets as well as a head-on view of Alcatraz at the end. I drove this street in a car with a stick shift so I want your respect for life.

For a more leisurely and luxurious experience head to the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel and head up to Top of the Mark on the 19th floor. This beautiful building has been a part of the San Francisco landscape for decades. In 1939 the owner transformed the penthouse into a bar where city views take center stage. The glass walls allow the city to shine while you enjoy spirits and snacks. Active military and veterans with valid ID can participate in the “Squadron Shot” tradition that’s been passed along since World War II. If you participate don’t forget to sign the log book.

Marin Headlands

Just across the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands offer a spectacular vantage point for viewing San Francisco’s skyline. You may even get some unique views as the fog comes in over the bay! Hawk Hill, in particular, provides an unparalleled perspective of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge, especially when illuminated against the night sky.

A former military fortification, Battery Spencer boasts some of the most iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. As night falls, the city’s lights create a dazzling backdrop, making this spot a must-visit for any San Francisco night view enthusiast.

Coming from San Francisco you’ll drive north across the Golden Gate Bridge to take the Alexander Avenue exit. Follow Alexander Avenue to Conzelman Road and pick your spot for the view of your choice. For those of you who are interested in a hike and getting a more isolated viewpoint, then Slacker Ridge provides a great view after a short but steep hike. Kirby Cove is another more off-the-beaten-path spot but it requires a mile-long hike on a dirt road that comes off from Battery Spenser.

Located within the Presidio, the Golden Gate Overlook is a popular spot to enjoy a fantastic view of the Golden Gate Bridge, with the San Francisco skyline in the background. And as the sun sets grab pizza at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana or a delicious Italian dinner at Piccolo Forno or Luisa’s. At night, the area comes alive with a warm, inviting atmosphere. Stroll through the charming streets, and enjoy the delicious aromas and glowing storefronts that make this district feel like the neighborhood you wished you lived in.

Mission District

The Mission District is known for its vibrant street art, trendy restaurants, and lively nightlife. This is home to Dolores Park, known for its amazing views of the city. As the sun sets, the neighborhood’s colorful murals take on a new life, illuminated by the streetlights and the buzz of activity. Explore the area’s bars, and wonderful restaurants, like El Techo for great food, drinks, and rooftop views, as well as the area art galleries for a taste of San Francisco’s creative spirit.

Financial District

The Financial District, with its towering skyscrapers and busy streets, offers a different perspective on San Francisco’s night views. The illuminated buildings create a dazzling display of modern architecture, and the area’s upscale bars and restaurants provide a sophisticated setting for a night out on the town. Perched on the 46th floor of the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, Cityscape Lounge boasts 360-degree panoramic views of the city. With floor-to-ceiling windows and a sophisticated atmosphere, this upscale bar is the ideal destination for a memorable night out, complete with stunning views of the illuminated skyline. Parking here is going to be much more wallet-friendly than at Charmaine’s above since the Union Square parking lot has some of the best prices in the city.

As mentioned earlier you don’t want to miss the great family-friendly vibe at El Techo. Located in the heart of the Mission District, El Techo is a lively rooftop bar offering Latin American street food and craft cocktails. With its casual atmosphere, string lights, and sweeping views of the city, El Techo provides a laid-back setting for enjoying San Francisco’s vibrant nightlife.

Nestled atop the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, The View Lounge lives up to its name, offering breathtaking vistas of the city from its floor-to-ceiling windows. Alaskan cruises are a popular way to explore the breathtaking coastal scenery and experience the majestic wildlife of Southeast Alaska. It’s important to research and choose a cruise line and ship that best suit your preferences and needs, for example, more eco-friendly ships or more intimate cruise lines. Each cruise line offers different amenities, excursions, and onboard experiences, so it’s a good idea to compare your options before making a decision.

The first thing to remember is that many cruise ships have formal nights where guests are expected to dress up. Be sure to pack formal wear, such as a suit or cocktail dress, to ensure you’re prepared for these special evenings. It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-dressed when it comes to cruise ship etiquette.

A pit stop at the local Costco at the beginning of our trip guaranteed we had snacks and drinks in the car ready to go should we ever need them.

Our hike along Exit Glacier was warm but the closer you get to the ice of the glacier and the closer you get to the peak, the cooler the weather becomes. That light jacket wrapped around your waist or stuffed in your backpack will come in handy.

Pack extra items, such as a first-aid kit, flashlight, and emergency blanket, to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. We sadly came across a hiker who had stumbled and fallen on a rather intense trail. Thankfully by the time we came to him a passerby with a first aid kit had come to his aid and was able to cover his wounds and apply pressure while they waited for park rangers to get help to him. It’s always better to be over-prepared, ensuring your dream trip remains enjoyable and safe.

A Utah national parks itinerary from Las Vegas takes into consideration that Las Vegas is a popular tourist destination that serves as an excellent starting point. With its well-connected transportation network and numerous car rental options, embarking on a road trip from Las Vegas allows for easier access to Utah’s national parks. Moreover, Las Vegas offers a variety of entertainment, outdoor activities like Red Rock Canyon, and accommodation options to enjoy before and after your trip. By starting your adventure in Las Vegas, you can combine the excitement of the city with the breathtaking beauty of Utah’s natural wonders.

Best time to visit Utah’s national parks

The best time to visit Utah’s national parks varies depending on your preferences. Summer months (June to August) are the high season, offering warm temperatures and longer daylight hours, ideal for hiking and other popular activities. However, expect larger crowds and potentially limited parking during this time. The shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) provide pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making them a great option for those seeking a more peaceful experience. Winter months (December to February) offer a unique, snowy perspective on the parks but may have limited accessibility due to weather conditions. We chose to follow this national parks road trip itinerary during the spring. This was the best way for us to enjoy good weather as well as avoid the crowds.

When planning your Utah national parks road trip, choosing the right rental car is crucial. Las Vegas offers numerous rental car agencies, providing a wide range of vehicles to suit your needs. Consider factors such as the number of passengers, luggage capacity, fuel efficiency, and vehicle type (sedan, SUV, or van) before making a decision. Additionally, ensure you have a valid driver’s license and are aware of any additional costs, such as insurance and one-way rental fees, before booking your rental car. For example, if you choose to fly into Las Vegas and rent a car there, but catch your return flight out of Salt Lake City then you will have an additional cost of a one-way rental to add to your budget. We did this as the convenience was worth the additional expense for our circumstances. 

Additional costs to consider

While planning your road trip, be mindful of additional costs you may incur during your journey. These can include park entrance fees, accommodation expenses, healthy food options and drinks, guided tours, and gas expenses. Creating a budget beforehand and researching ways to save, such as purchasing an America the Beautiful pass can help you enjoy your trip without breaking the bank. The America the Beautiful national park pass costs $80 and is valid for one year from the month of purchase. The lifetime senior pass is also $80 and is available to US citizens and permanent residents 62 years and older. This extra cost is a good option as it can save the pass holder quite a bit of money if planning to visit multiple parks that charge admission fees.  

Packing essentials for the trip

Packing the right essentials for your Utah national parks road trip will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Make sure to include items such as proper clothing and footwear for varying weather conditions, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, reusable water bottles, snacks, and a cooler for perishables. Additionally, pack essential gear for outdoor activities, such as hiking shoes, hats, and trekking poles, if needed. And on a road trip packed with this much natural beauty one of the best things you can bring is your camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking landscapes and wonderful memories.

Las Vegas to Zion National Park

Drive time and scenic route options

Embarking on your Utah national parks road trip from Las Vegas, the first destination is Zion National Park. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours and covers a distance of roughly 160 miles so getting an early start is very helpful. For a more scenic route, consider taking a slight detour to drive along the Virgin River Gorge, where you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the river and surrounding rock formations. This picturesque drive is sure to make your journey enjoyable.

Before reaching Zion National Park, consider stopping at Valley of Fire State Park, located just an hour from Las Vegas. This stunning park features vibrant red sandstone formations, petroglyphs, and unique hiking trails. Valley of Fire is one of the best places for a short hike or a picnic while taking in breathtaking landscapes. Don’t forget to take plenty of photos of the fiery rocks, which are particularly impressive during the early morning and late afternoon hours.

Zion National Park highlights

1. Upon arriving at Zion National Park, your first stop should be the visitor center, where you can gather essential information about the park, trail conditions, and shuttle services. During the high season, the park’s free round-trip shuttle service is mandatory for accessing popular trails and viewpoints, as private vehicles are restricted in certain areas. Plan your day around the shuttle schedule to ensure you make the most of your time at the park.

2. Zion National Park offers an array of hiking opportunities for all skill levels. Some of the best hikes include the challenging Angel’s Landing, which requires a permit but comes with stunning views from the top. The Narrows is a unique hike through the narrowest section of Zion Canyon. Visitors trek the shallow river waters and stand in awe of the sheer cliffs on each side.  Both hikes are popular attractions and can become crowded during peak times, so starting early is recommended.

Additionally, the soft lighting during sunrise and sunset makes for excellent photography opportunities.

The drive from Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon National Park takes approximately two hours, covering a distance of roughly 85 miles. The journey offers beautiful views of the southern Utah landscape, with the scenic byway passing through tunnels, forests, and red rock formations. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time and stop at various viewpoints along the way to fully appreciate the diverse scenery.

Bryce Canyon National Park highlights

1. Bryce Canyon National Park is known for its impressive hoodoos and one-of-a-kind viewpoints. Some of the best spots to take in the views are Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, and Inspiration Point. Each of these locations offers a unique perspective on the park’s remarkable geological formations, and they’re especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset. The short walk from the parking lot along a paved pathway makes these spots as accessible as they are beautiful. 
2. Bryce Canyon National Park offers various hiking trails suitable for all skill levels. The Rim Trail, 5.5-mile hike which runs along the edge of the canyon, offers stunning views of the hoodoos below and can be accessed from several points, which (good news!) makes it easy to customize the length of your hike. Another popular option is the Navajo Loop, which takes you down into the heart of the canyon, providing an up-close look at the park’s iconic rock formations. Be sure to check trail conditions at the visitor center before embarking on your hike.

3. Aside from the main viewpoints and popular hikes, Bryce Canyon National Park also features lesser-known attractions worth exploring. Wall Street, a narrow canyon filled with towering hoodoos, is one such hidden gem. Accessible via the Navajo Loop trail, this unique spot provides an opportunity to experience the park’s beauty away from the crowds.

4. Bryce Canyon National Park is known for its exceptionally dark skies, making it an ideal location for stargazing. The park offers night sky programs throughout the year, allowing visitors to learn about the constellations and celestial events while enjoying the beauty of the stars. Continuing your Utah national parks road trip, the journey from Bryce Canyon National Park to Capitol Reef National Park takes approximately two and a half hours, covering a distance of around 125 miles. While that may not seem like much time, this drive offers stunning views and diverse landscapes along Scenic Byway 12, widely considered one of the most beautiful drives in the United States. Be sure to allocate extra time to stop at various viewpoints and soak in the magnificent scenery along the way.

As you travel along Scenic Byway 12, you’ll pass through the vast Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, a protected area known for its unique geological features, including slot canyons and colorful cliffs. This expansive monument offers countless opportunities for hiking, canyoneering, and photography, making it worth a day trip on its own but for our itinerary, it’s an excellent stop during your Utah road trip.

Capitol Reef National Park highlights

1. Upon arriving at Capitol Reef National Park, don’t miss the chance to explore the Waterpocket Fold, a massive geological feature extending for nearly 100 miles. Scenic drives, such as the Capitol Reef Scenic Drive and Burr Trail, provide an excellent way to experience the park’s diverse landscapes, including its striking rock formations and desert vistas. The main scenic drive will lead you to dirt spur roads that access either Capitol Gorge or Grand Wash. Don’t be intimidated by the dirt road as they are suitable for passenger cars and lead to some of the best hikes in the park! 

2. Capitol Reef National Park boasts numerous hiking trails that cater to all skill levels. Some of the best hikes include Hickman Bridge, a short hike leading to a stunning natural bridge, and Cohab Canyon, which offers incredible views of the park’s unique rock formations. Consult with park rangers at the visitor center for the latest trail conditions and recommendations based on your interests and abilities.

3. While exploring Capitol Reef National Park, be sure to visit the historic orchards and the Gifford House, a charming homestead-turned-museum. Here, you’ll learn about the park’s early settlers and enjoy freshly baked pies and other delicious treats made from fruit grown in the park’s orchards.

4. Capitol Reef National Park is also home to ancient petroglyphs and cultural history dating back thousands of years. Be sure to stop at the petroglyph panels along the park’s main road to get a glimpse into the lives of the area’s early inhabitants.

Drive time and stop at Goblin Valley State Park

The drive from Capitol Reef National Park to Arches National Park takes around 2 hours and covers approximately 130 miles. You can break up the long drive by stopping at Goblin Valley State Park, a unique landscape filled with thousands of peculiar, mushroom-shaped rock formations called hoodoos. This fascinating park offers several short hikes and excellent photo opportunities. The busiest times of day for the park are from 10 AM to 4 PM and you can expect a delay of 1 – 2 hours due to cars backed up from the entrance gate, especially on weekends or holidays. 

Arches National Park highlights

1. Arches National Park is world-famous for its more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the iconic Delicate Arch. Be sure to take the time to hike to Delicate Arch or view it from the lower or upper viewpoints, along with other popular rock formations such as Landscape Arch and Double Arch.

2. Arches National Park offers a variety of hiking trails for all skill levels. Among the best hikes are Park Avenue, a relatively easy hike that takes you through a stunning canyon lined with towering sandstone walls, and Devil’s Garden, a more challenging trail featuring several impressive arches.

3. The park also offers several scenic drives and viewpoints, allowing visitors to take in the breathtaking landscapes from the comfort of their cars. The 18-mile Arches Scenic Drive showcases some of the park’s most famous arches and rock formations, with plenty of opportunities to stop and snap photos or embark on short hikes.

This park offers short hikes, mountain biking trails, and a breathtaking overlook that rivals the more famous Grand Canyon vistas.

Canyonlands National Park is divided into three districts, with the Island in the Sky being the most accessible and popular. Begin your exploration at the Island in the Sky Visitor Center, where you can gather information and plan your day. A must-see in this district is the famous Mesa Arch, which offers an incredible view of the surrounding canyons and the Green River below. Time your visit for sunrise, and you’ll be rewarded with a stunning spectacle as the sun illuminates the underside of the arch.

b. Grand View Point and short hikes

Another must-visit spot in the Island in the Sky District is Grand View Point. This overlook offers sweeping views of the canyon country below, and a short, easy hike along the rim allows for multiple perspectives of the unique landscape. Several other short hikes, such as the Upheaval Dome and White Rim Overlook, offer additional opportunities to explore the beauty of this district. Those with less time could catch the highlights of Canyonlands by simply enjoying the scenic drive in this district and making shorter pit stops at overlooks. 

2. The Needles District

The Needles District, located about 1.5 hours from the Island in the Sky, is known for its distinctive sandstone spires, natural bridges, and a more rugged landscape. If you have an extra day you could spend hours here just on the scenic drives in this district that offer striking views, with the Elephant Hill Road and the Colorado River Overlook being two popular choices. b. For those seeking more challenging hikes, the Needles District offers a variety of options. Trails like the Chesler Park Loop, Druid Arch, and the Joint Trail showcase the district’s unique rock formations, slot canyons, and panoramic vistas. Backpacking opportunities also abound in this district, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the wilderness.

3. The Maze District

a. Remote wilderness and multi-day adventures

The Maze District, the most remote and least visited of the three districts, is a haven for adventurers seeking solitude and rugged wilderness. Accessible only via dirt roads and requiring high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles, the Maze offers a true backcountry experience.

b. Extra time and special permits required

Visiting the Maze District requires extra time, careful planning, and often special permits. Multi-day hikes and off-road expeditions are popular in this district, but be prepared for self-sufficiency, as there are no amenities or services available. Remember when considering this adventure, your typical rental car will not be of use to you here. If planning a visit consider renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle in the Moab area.

The long drive is worth it as it takes you through the vast and varied landscapes of southeastern Utah, offering opportunities for photo stops and detours to explore other natural wonders.

1. Monument Valley, located on the border of Utah and Arizona, is an unforgettable sight, with its towering sandstone buttes and iconic red-rock formations. To experience the full beauty of Monument Valley, consider joining a guided tour led by members of the Navajo Nation, who can share their knowledge and stories about the area’s cultural and natural history. If you prefer to explore at your own pace, a self-guided scenic drive along the 17-mile Valley Drive allows you to take in the most famous landmarks, such as the Mittens and the Totem Pole.

2. Monument Valley’s dramatic landscape has served as a backdrop for countless movies, commercials, and photographs. The towering sandstone formations, such as the Mittens, the Three Sisters, and the Ear of the Wind, are truly awe-inspiring. Lake Powell, situated in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, is a fantastic destination for water enthusiasts, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. Additionally, there are several beautiful hiking trails and scenic drives throughout the recreation area. Glen Canyon Dam, located nearby, is an impressive engineering feat worth visiting as well.

C. Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon Village

Extending your road trip to include Grand Canyon National Park is a great option if you have the time. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon, with its accessible viewpoints and well-maintained trails, is the most popular area to visit. Best Time to Visit

Maui is a year-round destination with pleasant weather and activities available to visitors across the year. However, depending on your interests, some seasons may be more appealing than others. From December (when we visited) to April, humpback whales migrate to Maui’s warm waters. This is a fantastic time of year for whale watching.

How Many Days in Maui Do We Need?

All of the available activities and attractions could easily fill up a week or more. However, for those with limited time visiting Maui, like we were, it’s important to plan accordingly to make the most of your stay. The Road to Hana takes a full day to complete, while Haleakala National Park can also take a full day depending on chosen hikes. Snorkeling especially if done on your own at a beach nearby your lodging, can be a half day or just a couple of hours. A scenic drive on Highway 340 can take a half day.

To see the most and best of Maui, it’s recommended to spend at least a week on the island. However, if you have a shorter stay, you can still experience some of the best the island has to offer with our Top 5 recommended activities.

When we visited there was a food truck right across the road and we grabbed amazing smoothies before hitting the bay.

Or consider Maluaka Beach, or Turtle Town, where you have a better chance to swim alongside friendly green sea turtles. We also had amazing snorkeling with turtles experiences at Black Rock at Kaanapali Beach in West Maui. We recommend you start your snorkeling early in the morning as this beach is very close to resorts and can get crowded. Consider water conditions as well and snorkel only when the waters are calm to avoid strong currents.

Maui’s outdoor adventures don’t end there; from ziplining through lush canopies to horseback riding across the rolling hills of Upcountry Maui, the island has something for every nature lover. A wine enthusiast can create an entire road trip or vacation to wine destinations found in famous spots like Tuscany and Napa Valley. Hawaii does not immediately come to mind when thinking of wine. So the fact that the Hawaiian islands are able to produce their own showcases the islands’ ability to use their unique environment to create distinctive and delicious wines. Additionally, it reduces the need for importing wine from the mainland United States or other countries, contributing to a more sustainable local economy. And for us island fans who travel there to enjoy the beautiful tropical environment,  it offers us a chance to experience a unique facet of Hawaiian culture and history.

Maui Wines

There are not multiple wineries in Maui. In fact, there are three wineries total in all of Hawaii, including Volcano Winery on the Big Island of Hawaii and Oeno Winemaking on Oahu. Maui Wines is the only Maui winery, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. A winery tour highlights the rich history that dates back to 1974, which I don’t want to say was a long time ago but if I’m being honest, it was. It was in the early 70s when C. Pardee Erdman planted a vineyard on the slopes of Maui’s Haleakala volcano. In partnership with Emil Tedeschi, the two began producing wine using the volcanic soil of the island. And in the spirit of “No time like the present,” they didn’t waste a second and honed their wine-making skills with the materials they had. While they waited for the grapes to mature, they used a local fruit that was plentiful and at their disposal,  pineapple, to make wine.

Today, Maui Wines,  less than 30 minutes drive from Kahului, offers visitors a full tasting experience that includes multiple wine offerings, a tasting menu, and the option to enjoy a self-guided and free tour of the historic estate. Many of the original buildings still exist and have been repurposed to complement the practical production area of Maui Wines. The winery is most famous for its pineapple wines, including Maui Blanc, a dry white wine, Maui Splash, a sweeter wine, and O Hula Maui, a sparkling wine. A unique fruit wine, no matter which you choose, captures the essence of Maui’s tropical environment and offers a refreshing taste of the islands.

In addition to pineapple wines, Maui Wines also produces grape-based wines under the label of Rose Ranch. The winery’s grape-based wines include Lokelani, a sparkling rose, Kula White, a dry white wine, and Mele Red, a medium-bodied red wine. They’ve recently added their Estate wines, like the Chenin Blanc available exclusively at their on-site store, to the tasting menu as well. With a tasting room and outdoor lanai, Maui Wines offers a beautifully relaxed setting for visitors to enjoy their wine-tasting experience in island style.

Visitors can order a wine tasting and small plates that perfectly match their wines, in the King’s Cottage tasting room. Tours of the historic estate encourage visitors to enjoy the grounds and appreciate how modern-day and historic past have been brought together in an eclectic and purposeful mix. The renovated space compliments the history room, where you can discover the various transformations that have happened at the Ulupalakua Ranch over the years, in addition to the original mango wood wine bar and live music on the King’s Cottage lanai. 

There is also the option to join a tasting at The Old Jail, a weathered stone building that literally once served as a jail on the property, which is now serving from their smaller collections of wine. Wine-tasting sessions include in-depth explanations of the history of wine production on the property and visitors get introduced to special selections that are different from those available at King’s Cottage. 

As the winery has matured so has its selection. They have expanded to single varietals of Syrah, Grenache, and Voigner just to name a few.

Upcountry Maui and its Significance to Maui’s Wine Industry

Upcountry Maui is the highest-elevation farming region in the state of Hawaii and is home to a variety of crops, including the grapes used in winemaking. The region’s unique geography and climate provide the perfect location and ideal growing conditions for grapes, which thrive in the rich volcanic soil and cooler temperatures. The volcanic soil also provides the grapes with essential minerals and nutrients, giving them a distinct and flavorful taste.

Fruit wines and other unique wines

In addition to grape wines, Maui’s winemakers also produce a variety of fruit wines, including a raspberry dessert wine. Their own wines are made using locally-sourced fruit and honey, giving them a unique taste that reflects the flavors of the islands. Raspberry wine is a popular choice among visitors and pairs well with the tropical fruits and flavors found in the country’s 50th state.

The winery is open Tuesday – Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM. Reservations are strongly encouraged to schedule a 90-minute tasting. You can book early starting approximately 90 days before your arrival. Tasting flights cost $12 – $15 and wines by the glass vary from $6 to $20. The tasting menu changes frequently.

While wine production on the islands is not for the faint of heart, the work they are doing at Maui Wines may inspire others to add to the wineries in Maui. For those of us who appreciate a local spin on a great glass of wine, Maui Wines does not disappoint and is worth the visit.

New Orleans is a city that is full of excitement and wonder, with something for everyone to enjoy. For families with teens, there is no shortage of adventure to be found in the historic French Quarter. The area is filled with interesting architecture, unique culture, and delicious food, making it the perfect place to start your weekend in New Orleans. Here’s a guide to a perfect day in the French Quarter with your teens.

Start your day off right with a visit to the iconic Cafe du Monde, a landmark that is over 150 years old. Just follow the trail of powdered sugar on the sidewalk that leads right up to this world-famous spot. The open-air cafe is famous for its hot and fluffy beignets, which are delicious French-style doughnuts covered in powdered sugar. Grab a table, or sit on a bench in the park across the street and watch the world go by as you enjoy these sweet treats and a cup of their signature chicory coffee.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the French Quarter, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. This area is filled with historic buildings and narrow streets, and it’s easy to get lost in the magic of the place. Your teens will love exploring the nooks and crannies of the city’s oldest neighborhood, discovering hidden courtyards and picturesque balconies.

Next, stop by the French Quarter Visitor Center for Jean Lafitte to learn more about the history of the area. The center offers historical exhibits and guided walking tours that explore the fascinating past of this iconic neighborhood. Your teens will be captivated by the stories of pirates, smugglers, and voodoo queens that once roamed these streets.

For lunch, head over to Central Grocery, a family-owned deli that has been serving up delicious sandwiches since 1906. The store is famous for its muffuletta, a sandwich made with Italian cold cuts, cheese, and a tangy olive salad, served on a round loaf of bread. Take your sandwich to go and have a picnic in one of the nearby parks.

After lunch, explore the French Market, a colorful and bustling open-air market that has been operating since the late 1700s. The market features a variety of vendors selling everything from local produce to candy to handmade crafts, and it’s a great place to find unique souvenirs and gifts to take home.

New Orleans is one of the most famously food-centric cities in the United States. Finish off your day in the French Quarter with a hearty meal at Mother’s Restaurant, a New Orleans institution that has been serving up classic Creole and Cajun dishes since 1938. The menu is full of delicious options, including their famous Ferdi Special, a sandwich made with roast beef, ham, debris, and gravy. Your teens will love the lively atmosphere and the chance to try some of the city’s most iconic dishes. Or you can grab a meal at the Acme Oyster House where our family feasted on chargrilled oysters, po-boys, gumbo, and platters of local specialties. 

Exploring the French Quarter is a must-do experience for anyone visiting New Orleans, and it’s the perfect way to kick off a weekend in the city. With delicious food, interesting history, and plenty of opportunities for adventure, your teens will be sure to have a blast in this iconic neighborhood.

Day 2: Outdoor Adventures and History in New Orleans

Welcome to day 2 of your teen-approved adventures in New Orleans! Today we will be exploring the city’s rich history and enjoying some outdoor adventures.

Start your day off right with a hearty breakfast at Elizabeth’s Restaurant. This cozy spot on Gallier Street is known for its delicious Southern-style breakfast dishes. Don’t miss their famous praline bacon!

After breakfast, make your way to the National WWII Museum. This was one of our favorite experiences in the city. The world-renowned museum offers an immersive experience that brings the history of World War II to life. From interactive exhibits to personal stories, this museum is a must-see for history buffs of all ages. I found myself standing in front of a few of these exhibits unable to walk away as I listened to first-person accounts of what it was like to land on the Normandy coast on D-Day. The way they cover in great detail, not just the war itself, but also the United States during the years leading up to the war, was amazing and added to the immersive nature of the museum experience. 

For lunch, head to Willie Mae’s Scotch House. While they do have a location in California, this iconic restaurant has been serving up delicious Southern soul food in New Orleans for over 60 years. Be sure to try their famous fried chicken.

After lunch, make your way to City Park. This 1,300-acre park is home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, which features an impressive collection of over 40,000 objects, ranging from contemporary art to ancient artifacts. Take a stroll through the beautiful sculpture garden and enjoy the outdoor art installations.

End your day with dinner at Jacques-Imo’s Cafe. Check out their linked website here and if this looks like your kind of place, be sure to reserve up to one month in advance. This funky restaurant in the Uptown neighborhood is known for its delicious Creole and Cajun cuisine. Be sure to try their famous fried chicken with waffles. Want something you won’t find anywhere else? Get a fork ready for the alligator cheesecake. I personally have not tried it but I did hear good reviews. I leave that one up to you. Don’t forget to check out the colorful murals and eclectic decor! 

Or you can enjoy a New Orleans classic at Camellia Grill. This NOLA institution was featured on Somebody Feed Phil. The affordable diner opened in 1946 and is famous for its breakfast omelets (served all day), burgers, and desserts. 

Overall, day 2 is the perfect mix of history and outdoor adventure, with plenty of delicious food along the way. Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or just looking for some tasty Southern cuisine, New Orleans has something for everyone.

Day 3: Music and Culture in New Orleans

Start your day with a delicious breakfast or brunch at Ruby Slipper, a local favorite known for its tasty dishes and laid-back atmosphere. I live for a good Bennie and these guys know how to put a southern spin on this classic dish. Choose the Bayou Shrimp, Crawfish & Grits, or go more traditional. You can’t go wrong. And don’t stress if there’s a wait. You’re in good hands in New Orleans. We enjoyed walking the neighborhood while we waited for our table, as we discovered beautiful houses with gates still draped in bead necklaces left over from Mardi Gras. 

After fueling up, head to the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park to learn about the city’s rich musical heritage. This park is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the origins and evolution of jazz, which has deep roots in New Orleans.

Next, take a streetcar ride through the charming Garden District. This historic neighborhood is filled with stunning architecture and beautiful gardens and is home to some of the city’s most impressive mansions. Take a stroll through the streets and admire the ornate houses, or stop by Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 to look through the gates at the above-ground tombs this area is so famous for. The cemetery has been closed for quite a few years and at the time of writing we are not sure when it will reopen again. 

We just can’t stop talking about food and who can blame us because this is New Orleans! For lunch, head to Joey K’s, a local favorite that serves up classic New Orleans dishes like po’boys, gumbo, and red beans and rice. If you had brunch earlier, feel free to skip straight to exploring the Garden District.

In the evening, make your way to Commander’s Palace for dinner. This iconic restaurant has been a fixture in the Garden District for over 130 years and is known for its award-winning cuisine and elegant atmosphere. It’s a great place to enjoy a memorable meal and experience some of the city’s famous Southern hospitality. If you’d like to explore something less formal and “faaahhncy”, then head back to Decatur for Coop’s Place. This hole-in-the-wall spot boasts fantastic Creole dishes at a more affordable price. 

Overall, this three-day itinerary provides a great introduction to all that New Orleans has to offer. Whether you’re interested in food, history, music, or just soaking up the unique culture of the city, there’s something for everyone here. The Quapaw still maintain a presence in the area today, and visitors to the park can learn about their culture and history at the Quapaw Bathhouse and Cultural Center. It is important to acknowledge and honor the indigenous peoples who have called this land home for thousands of years.

As the 18th national park to be established in the United States, Hot Springs National Park has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. Today, it remains a popular tourist attraction and a perfect location for those looking to relax and unwind in the midst of natural beauty.

Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs National Park

One of the main draws of Hot Springs National Park is its famous Bathhouse Row, a series of historic bathhouses that line the main street of downtown Hot Springs. The historic Fordyce Bathhouse, now a museum and visitor center run by the National Park Service, offers a glimpse into the history of the thermal waters that have drawn visitors to the area for centuries. Other bathhouses on the row have been converted into luxury hotels, gift shops, and even a brewery. The Superior Bathhouse Brewery offers visitors a unique experience with a craft beer or root beer brewed using the thermal waters of the park. This is the only national park with a brewery in it, so take advantage if you can!

No trip to Hot Springs National Park would be complete without a visit to the natural hot springs themselves.
