Known around the globe as Sin City, Las Vegas is a stellar destination that offers more than just its famous casinos. When visiting Las Vegas in November the iconic neon lights of the Las Vegas Strip, sparkle in the crisper air. Las Vegas is a city that promises a great time.

As we approach the month of November, Las Vegas takes on a different charm. While summer in the desert can be scorchingly hot, November sees cooler temperatures, making it a good time to explore the city and its numerous attractions without the intense heat.

The city also sees fewer visitors in November compared to peak tourist seasons. This means fewer crowds and shorter queues, allowing you to enjoy the Entertainment Capital of the World at a more leisurely pace. From catching a show to trying your luck at the casinos or exploring the gastronomic delights, Las Vegas in November is undeniably a time of great potential and excitement.

Las Vegas Weather in November

When planning your trip, understanding Las Vegas weather in November is crucial. Typically, the city experiences a high temperature averaging in the mid-60s (Fahrenheit) during this month. The average temperature tends to hover around a comfortable 50 degrees Fahrenheit, a noticeable drop from the intense heat of the previous months. This means you can expect cooler temperatures and mild days, perfect for outdoor exploration.

The Las Vegas weather in November is characterized by cooler weather and mild temperatures, offering a welcome respite from the scorching summer heat. Daytime temperatures are typically comfortable, but you may want to pack a light jacket for the evenings when temperatures can dip further. As the month progresses, the city begins to feel the onset of winter, but it’s still generally mild compared to the northern states.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Relative humidity in November averages around 44%, providing a comfortable dryness that makes sightseeing and outdoor activities pleasant. It’s also one of the less rainy months, with the average rainfall recorded at just over half an inch. Light rain can occur, but heavy downpours are rare. This weather data can be very reassuring if you’re looking to avoid the wet season.

As for daylight hours, Las Vegas in November typically sees an average of 10 hours of daylight per day. This gives you plenty of time to experience all that Sin City has to offer. So, whether you’re hitting the Las Vegas Strip, exploring the surrounding natural wonders, or enjoying a show, November’s weather conditions are just right for making the most of your visit.

Best Time to Visit Las Vegas in November

November is arguably the best time to visit Las Vegas for several reasons. As the city transitions into cooler weather, the Las Vegas Strip, known for its bustling activity, sees fewer crowds. This makes it an ideal time for tourists who prefer a more relaxed pace to enjoy the city’s vibrant energy.

The end of the month, in particular, offers a unique allure. With the holiday season approaching, the city starts to don festive decorations, and higher elevations in the nearby mountains experience snow. This makes the Las Vegas Strip even more enchanting, and witnessing the holiday transformation is a spectacle not to be missed.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Another advantage of visiting in November is the potential for better deals on accommodation. As this period is considered off-peak season, even the most popular hotels, including the likes of The Venetian, Bellagio, and Caesars Palace, offer attractive rates.

Securing a room in the best hotels at lower costs not only saves money but also enhances the overall Las Vegas experience. With extra savings, you can indulge in other experiences, like fine dining, attending shows, or trying your luck at a casino. Therefore, a November visit can offer the best of Las Vegas without breaking the bank.

Getting to Las Vegas

Exploring the Las Vegas Strip

First on your itinerary should be exploring the Las Vegas Strip. The cooler November weather makes strolling along this iconic stretch a comfortable and enjoyable experience. With its glittering lights, impressive hotels, and high-energy atmosphere, the Strip offers a unique blend of entertainment and excitement.

Nearby State and National Parks

Take a break from the city’s hustle and bustle and venture out to Red Rock Canyon and Death Valley National Park. These natural beauties showcase a different side of Nevada, with striking landscapes and captivating wildlife. The cooler November weather makes hiking and sightseeing in these parks more enjoyable. And Veterans Day on November 11th is National Public Lands Day when you can take part in organized clean-ups or enjoy free entrance to public parks.

Hoover Dam

A visit to the architectural marvel that is the Hoover Dam is a must. Just a short drive from Las Vegas, this impressive structure offers stunning views and a rich history. Guided tours are available, providing an educational and interesting day trip. We found that leaving early in the morning gives you a jump start on the rest of the visitors and helps you avoid the crowds and long lines of cars waiting to get access to parking.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Grand Canyon Trip

Consider taking a day trip to the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon. There are numerous tour companies offering packages from Las Vegas, making it a convenient addition to your itinerary. November’s mild weather enhances the experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the Canyon’s natural splendor. You may even get a chance to see snow in the canyon which makes the park’s red rock stand out all that much more.

Visiting Spa Facilities

With pool season winding down, consider visiting the luxurious spa facilities at Caesar’s Palace and Mandalay Bay. These renowned establishments offer a range of services, from relaxing massages to rejuvenating treatments, providing an excellent way to unwind.

Watching Performances

Las Vegas is known for its world-class performances. Cirque du Soleil, Blue Man Group, Carrot Top, and David Copperfield all have shows in November. Each offers a unique and unforgettable experience, adding to the city’s vibrant entertainment scene. For fans of Michael Jackson music, you can catch Michael Jackson One by Cirque du Soleil

Live Music

November in Las Vegas is a great time for live music. Country fans will be delighted to know that Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, and Garth Brooks often have performances scheduled in the city during this time. Katy Perry is wrapping up her run in early November.

If you have some people in your group who are not country music fans I think you could still check out Garth Brooks. He puts on an amazing show and even responds to audience members who come to his shows with giant signs to request their favorite song. It’s amazing that no matter the song he can sing the lyrics and play along. Check for schedules and book your tickets early.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Comedy and Magic Shows

For a dose of laughter, catch a comedy show. Comedians David Spade and magician Criss Angel are regulars on the Las Vegas scene and their performances are a guaranteed good time. These shows offer a fun way to enjoy the evening after a day of sightseeing.

Ice Rink and Christmas Decorations

As November ends, Las Vegas starts to embrace the Christmas spirit. Ice rinks pop up around the city, offering a fun activity for the whole family. For those of you that think ice skating in the desert must be a sub-par experience think again! You can take advantage of open skate times at City National Arena which the Golden Knights Ice Hockey team calls home. The Cosmopolitan (which also hosts my favorite buffet, the Wicked Spoon) transforms one of its pool areas into an ice rink and hosts a “Date Skate” event on Fridays and Saturdays starting mid-November.

The city’s Christmas decorations, especially on the Las Vegas Strip, are a sight to behold. And I’m not just talking about twinkling lights. This is a city that knows how to put on a show! So expect to have multiple Christmas-themed events available, think Immersive Nutcracker or a winter wonderland-themed Tournament of Kings. Or a holiday maze at Enchant on the Strip and a drive-through holiday light show called Glittering Lights with a live nativity scene at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Food Festivals

Finally, if you’re a foodie, be sure not to miss the Great Las Vegas Taco Festival or the Food Truck Festival. The Taco Festival event showcases a variety of delicious tacos from different vendors on Nov 5th – 7th. And the Food Truck Festival is on the 2nd of November. What better way to round off your November visit than with a taste of these mouth-watering events?

Special Events in November

In November, Las Vegas hosts a variety of special events that add to the city’s allure. Veterans Day, a national holiday, is celebrated with various ceremonies and parades, paying tribute to those who have served, as well as numerous locations that provide discounts to veterans. Black Friday is another highlight, with shopping malls offering massive discounts. Always keep an eye out for current events and music festivals as well – Las Vegas is known for its packed event calendar.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Tips for Visiting Las Vegas in November

When visiting Las Vegas in November, it’s advisable to dress in light layers. The mild days and cooler evenings mean you’ll want to adjust your clothing throughout the day. Remember, proof of age is essential in many places, especially if you’re planning on enjoying the city’s nightlife. Make the most of free entrance days to museums and attractions to save on extra costs. Always budget for any unexpected expenses to ensure a stress-free vacation.

A November visit to Las Vegas offers a unique blend of comfortable weather, fewer crowds, and a host of activities and events. It’s a great time to experience the city or use it as a starting point for an epic national park road trip, even in one of the coldest months.
Nestled within the picturesque Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas is a remarkable tribute to the natural beauty and healing powers of thermal waters. The park, steeped in rich history and breathtaking natural allure, has long been a sanctuary for those seeking the soothing embrace of its thermal springs. The thermal waters, naturally heated by the earth’s core, are an intrinsic element of the park, flowing freely and continuously to offer visitors a unique, rejuvenating experience.

Hot Springs, aptly nicknamed “The American Spa,” has an impressive history that is deeply intertwined with the bathing industry. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the city witnessed a booming bathing industry, owing much to the thermal waters’ perceived healing properties. During this time, the city became a hub for visitors from across the United States, including notable figures such as Al Capone and Babe Ruth, who sought solace and relaxation in the warm, mineral-rich waters.

Integral to the identity of Hot Springs are its bathhouses, the grand structures lining Central Avenue, collectively known as “Bathhouse Row.” These bathhouses, some of which have been in continuous operation since the early 1900s, offer an array of experiences, from traditional bathing rituals to modern spa services. They stand as monuments to the city’s past and continue to be a vital part of its present, playing a key role in making Hot Springs a destination of choice for wellness and relaxation.

History and Legacy of the Bathhouses

The origin of the bathing industry in Hot Springs can be traced back to the late 1800s. The discovery of thermal springs in the area sparked a revolution, giving rise to an industry focused on health and well-being. By the early 1900s, Hot Springs had already established itself as a prominent destination for thermal baths, thanks to the numerous bathhouses offering a range of services, from needle showers to sitz baths.

Long before the rise of the bathing industry, Native American tribes held a deep reverence for the healing waters of Hot Springs. They believed these thermal mineral waters held therapeutic properties, a belief that was embraced and propagated by the burgeoning bathing industry. These thermal waters, flowing freely from the Ouachita Mountains, continue to be a main ingredient in the spa experience offered by the bathhouses.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

The National Park Service plays a significant role in preserving the rich history and legacy of Hot Springs. Established in the early 1900s, the service has ensured the continued operation of the bathhouses, preserving their traditional bathing experiences while facilitating modern enhancements. The Park’s Visitor Center, located in the Fordyce Bathhouse, is a testament to this commitment, offering a wealth of information about the city’s bathhouses and their history.

Famous figures like Al Capone and Babe Ruth have graced the bathhouses of Hot Springs, attracted by the allure of the thermal waters. Al Capone, the notorious gangster, was known to frequent the city, while Babe Ruth, the baseball legend, visited during his spring training sessions. These visits have added an interesting dimension to the history of the bathhouses, further enhancing their reputation and allure.

Spring training in Hot Springs during the early 1900s wasn’t complete without a trip to the bathhouses. The bathhouses, with their steam cabinets and hot packs, offered the perfect respite for baseball players after rigorous training sessions. The city’s bathhouses, with their rich history and continuous operation, remain an integral part of Hot Springs, a testament to their enduring appeal.

Overview of Prominent Bathhouses

Buckstaff Bathhouse, one of the most iconic structures along Central Avenue, has been in continuous operation since the early 1900s. Known for its adherence to traditional bathing experiences, a visit to Buckstaff is a journey back in time. Here, bath attendants guide visitors through a sequence of therapeutic treatments, including a sitz bath, needle shower, and a stint in a steam cabinet, followed by hot packs application.

Inside Buckstaff Bathhouse, you’ll find well-preserved locker rooms and changing rooms that bear the charm of the early 1900s. The bathhouse also offers private baths, ensuring a personalized and serene bathing experience. Each bath is filled with thermal spring water, which flows directly from Hot Springs Mountain, maintaining its warmth and mineral content.

On the other hand, Quapaw Bathhouse offers a unique blend of historic charm and modern spa services.
Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Quapaw Bathhouse also boasts a steam cave, a unique feature that offers a deep, intense steam experience. Whether you’re soaking in the public pools or relaxing in a private tub, you’re sure to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the thermal waters.

The Maurice, Lamar, and Hale Bathhouses have each undergone transformations, repurposing their historic spaces while preserving their rich architectural details. Maurice Bathhouse is vacant today but will be undergoing renovations soon. Lamar Bathhouse houses a delightful gift shop, offering visitors a chance to take a piece of Hot Springs home with them, including glass bottles you can fill with spring water just outside and around the corner. Hale Bathhouse, on the other hand, has been transformed into the Hotel Hale. The building is the oldest structure on Bathhouse Row and a fitting spot to spend the night.

Finally, the Superior Bathhouse Brewery holds a unique place on Bathhouse Row. It’s the only brewery in the United States that uses thermal spring water as its main ingredient, a fact that gives its craft beers a unique taste. Housed in a historic bathhouse, the brewery offers a unique combination of history, innovation, and excellent beer, making it a must-visit spot on any trip to Hot Springs.

The island, part of the beautiful Hawaiian Islands, is a tropical paradise that offers both locals and tourists an unrivaled snorkeling experience. This guide for fish to see snorkeling in Maui is one of the best ways to enjoy Maui and prepare for an amazing time in the warmer waters of Maui’s coastline. Snorkeling in Maui is a great way to get a closer look at the abundant variety of fish and sea creatures inhabiting the Hawaiian waters.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Maui

One of the most popular places for snorkeling in Maui is the Molokini Crater. This unique volcanic formation off the coast provides a stunning backdrop for your underwater adventures. Accessible only by boat tour, Molokini Crater is a popular place for snorkelers and scuba divers alike, that’s home to some of the most beautiful coral reefs and tropical fish in the area. With its clear water and calm waters, you can easily spot Moorish idols, yellow tangs, and even the rare black triggerfish.

Honolua Bay, a Marine Life Conservation District, is another great place to snorkel. The bay is known for its shallow reefs and rocky outcroppings, providing a habitat for a wide range of sea creatures. Regardless of your skill level, you’ll find Honolua Bay a welcoming snorkel site, with its calm waters and vibrant marine life.

Turtle Town, located at Maluaka Beach, lives up to its name. Here, you have a high chance of spotting the majestic Hawaiian green sea turtles. The sandy beach provides easy access to the warm waters, which are teeming with abundant coral species. The sight of these gentle giants grazing on the seafloor is a sight you won’t easily forget.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Kapalua Bay is another one of Maui’s best beaches for snorkeling. Known for its calm waters, beautiful coral reefs, and diverse marine life, it’s a popular location for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. The west Maui Bay also provides convenient public restrooms and a parking lot, ensuring a comfortable experience for all visitors.

Black Rock, situated at the northern end of Kaanapali Beach, is a local favorite and is considered a great spot for snorkeling. The clear water and deep water sections offer a chance to encounter various sea creatures, from small fish to colorful butterflyfish. The sandy beach and easy access make it a preferred choice for families and first-time snorkelers. We thought it was one of the best spots we snorkeled on the island when we visited.

Kahekili Beach Park, also known as Airport Beach, is another snorkeling gem on the west coast of Maui. This park is characterized by its shallow water and rocky areas, perfect for spotting small schools of tropical fish. During the winter months, you might even catch a glimpse of humpback whales passing by.

Lastly, for more experienced snorkelers, Ahihi Bay and La Perouse Bay on Maui’s south shore are must-visits. The strong currents at Ahihi Bay make for an exciting snorkeling experience at high tide as long as you stay in the bay, where you can encounter beautiful fish around the rocky outcrops. Be exceptionally careful to avoid intruding on coral during low tide and use the concrete to get out into the deeper water. During high tide, you have enough clearance to snorkel over the coral. Or get up early when the waves are calm and there is less wind to enjoy Makena Beach. With the right conditions, this is also a great spot, especially known for its vibrant reef fish and beautiful coral species.

Tropical Fish and Sea Creatures to Spot

With a snorkel and fins at the ready, let’s take a deep dive into the dazzling array of tropical fish and sea creatures you can spot in the warm waters of Maui.

One of the most captivating sights you’ll encounter is the Hawaiian green sea turtle. One of the best places they are often spotted is at Turtle Town, where the sandy beach provides easy access to their underwater world. The green sea turtle is easily recognizable by its large size and the distinctive pattern of black stripes and patches on the side of its body. If you’re lucky, you might spot them in small cove areas around rocky outcroppings.

Next up, is the Moorish Idol, a beautiful fish that’s easily recognizable due to its unique dorsal fin and distinctive black stripes. Often found swimming in small schools around the rocky outcrops of Molokini Crater, the Moorish Idol is a sight to behold.

Another tropical fish that will catch your eye with its bright yellow color and white spots is the Yellow Tang. Convict Tang, with its black spot, is also a common sight. They are mostly seen in shallow reefs, grazing on the coral polyps and algae that form their diet.

Butterfly fish are another highlight of the Hawaiian waters, with their white stripes and black bands making them easy to spot. Two types, in particular, the Raccoon Butterflyfish and Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish, are local favorites. Look for these beautiful fish around coral gardens and rocky outcroppings.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

The Parrot Fish, with its vibrant colors and distinctive beak-like mouth, is another spectacle to behold. They are commonly seen around shallow reefs, often hectically nibbling on coral polyps. Their feeding activity is crucial for the health of the coral reefs as it helps to control the growth of algae.

The Black Triggerfish, with its black color and pectoral fins, is another impressive sight. These fish are closely connected to the ecosystem’s health, feeding on sea cucumbers and sea urchins, a wide variety of things they can sink their very tough teeth into. They are found mainly in deeper waters, especially around the west coast of Maui.

A Moray Eel, although a rare sight, is indeed a special encounter. Their elongated bodies and unique faces make them easy to recognize. They are often found hiding in deeper waters around rocky outcrops. They look intimidating with their open mouth and sharp teeth but just give them a wide berth and don’t make large or sudden movements that could startle the eel. And don’t try to feed it.

Manta Rays are another extraordinary sight in the open waters and deeper sections of Maui. These gentle giants, with their large pectoral fins and graceful movements, are an unforgettable sight. Boat tours offer the best opportunities to spot them, especially in areas with strong currents.

Lastly, the Hawaiian Monk Seal is a unique creature that can occasionally be spotted on the North Shore, particularly during the winter months. The conservation efforts surrounding these mostly solitary seals make any sighting a special experience. They are one of the most endangered marine mammals globally, and only found in the islands of the Hawaiian archipelago so spotting one is a unique privilege.

Maui’s marine life is diverse and vibrant, with each creature contributing to the unique beauty of the Hawaiian waters. Whether you’re snorkeling in shallow water or exploring deeper sections, the opportunity to encounter these fascinating sea creatures is a major part of what makes snorkeling in Maui such a memorable experience.

Snorkeling Tips and Gear

To make the most of your snorkeling experience in Maui, it’s essential to understand the best times to go, what gear you’ll need, and some safety tips to keep in mind.

Firstly, the best time for snorkeling in Maui depends on various factors, including water temperatures and conditions. The summer months, from April to October, offer the warmest water temperatures and calmer sea conditions, making it ideal for snorkeling. However, the winter months, particularly between December and March, offer unique opportunities such as sighting humpback whales, despite slightly cooler water temperatures.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

When it comes to snorkeling gear, having the right equipment can make a big difference in your snorkeling experience. Essential snorkeling gear includes a mask, snorkel, and fins. Depending on water temperatures, you may also want to consider a wetsuit. Renting gear is a convenient option, especially if you’re visiting and don’t want to lug your own equipment around. However, bringing your own gear can ensure a better fit and more comfort.

Safety should always be your top priority when snorkeling. Pay close attention to water conditions and be wary of strong winds that can lead to choppy waters and strong currents. Always snorkel within your skill level, and consider taking a guided snorkeling tour if you’re less experienced. Remember, preserving the beautiful coral reefs and respecting marine life is part of being a responsible snorkeler.

Snorkeling in Maui offers an unforgettable experience. From the clear blue waters of Molokini Crater to the shallow reefs of Turtle Town, the best snorkeling spots in Maui offer a close-up view of a breathtaking underwater world. The diversity of fish and sea creatures is astounding, with Hawaiian green sea turtles, Moorish idols, yellow tangs, butterfly fish, and even the occasional Hawaiian monk seal making an appearance.

There’s no better way to experience the beauty of the Hawaiian waters than by diving beneath the surface and exploring the world beneath the waves. Whether you’re an experienced snorkeler or trying it for the first time, the vibrant marine life and beautiful coral reefs of Maui are waiting to be discovered as part of your stay in Maui. So grab your snorkel gear and prepare for an adventure that you’ll never forget.

San Francisco, the beautiful City by the Bay, is known for its impressive architecture, iconic landmarks, and picturesque landscapes. When the sun sets, the city lights up, creating a magical atmosphere that captivates both locals and tourists alike. There’s nothing more beautiful to me than taking the Sixth Street off-ramp from 280 and getting that fantastic view of the cityscape as it lights up in the dusk. There’s something truly special about experiencing San Francisco at night, and this article is here to guide you through the best places to witness these breathtaking views.

But it isn’t just the Sixth Street off-ramp that gives you amazing views. Choosing the perfect spot to take in the city’s enchanting nighttime skyline can be as unique to the viewer as San Francisco is as a city. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, this guide will help you navigate San Francisco’s most scenic vantage points and panoramic views, ensuring that you experience the city’s true beauty in all its illuminated glory. And you can choose for yourself which viewpoint captures this wonderful city the best.

Panoramic Views and Scenic Vantage Points

Twin Peaks

At an elevation of 922 feet, the summit of Twin Peaks offers a spectacular 360-degree view of the entire city. As the city lights twinkle below, you’ll be able to see the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and the downtown skyline, creating a truly awe-inspiring panorama. Make sure to bring a jacket, as it can get chilly at this elevation! At the time of writing, vehicles needed to use the gate off Portola Drive to gain access. If you arrive here before sunset and are interested in a bit of exercise, you can hike the entire 2.1-mile out-and-back trail. Access to the trail can be made from multiple entry points along Twin Peaks Blvd.

Grand View Park

Take the Moraga Mural Steps up to Grand View Park for a quintessential San Francisco experience. Grandview Park is a lesser-known gem that boasts some of the most stunning views of San Francisco. With its vibrant mosaic staircase and lush foliage, this park offers a serene and picturesque atmosphere for you to enjoy the cityscape at night.

Tank Hill

If you’ve already tackled Twin Peaks and you’re on the lookout for a more intimate experience, head to Tank Hill, located just east of Twin Peaks. This lesser-known spot provides a unique vantage point overlooking the city, offering a more peaceful setting to take in the captivating views.

Coit Tower Telegraph Hill

Standing at attention at the top of Telegraph Hill in Pioneer Park, Coit Tower is an iconic San Francisco landmark that offers a fantastic view of the city. You can climb steps or take the elevator to the top for 365-degree views of the city. But since they close at 5 or 6 PM depending on the time of the year, this isn’t your spot to see the city lit up at night. Rather in the evening, Coit Tower becomes the star of the show. At night, the illuminated tower serves as a beacon, yet another landmark that adds to the stunning vistas of the bay and the surrounding neighborhoods.

And don’t limit yourself to just the tower! The surrounding area of Telegraph Hill also offers a wealth of vantage points for admiring the city’s nighttime beauty. Wander the winding streets and enjoy unique perspectives of the skyline, the bay, and even Alcatraz Island.

Nob Hill

This fantastic neighborhood offers an array of classic San Francisco locations such as Grace Cathedral and the Fairmont Hotel famous for its elaborately decorated lobby and the Tonga Room. But for amazing views, you have a few options. For the brave of heart, you can drive the incredibly steep California Street and catch iconic views of the city from side streets as well as a head-on view of Alcatraz at the end. I drove this street in a car with a stick shift so I want your respect for life.

For a more leisurely and luxurious experience head to the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel and head up to Top of the Mark on the 19th floor. This beautiful building has been a part of the San Francisco landscape for decades. In 1939 the owner transformed the penthouse into a bar where city views take center stage. The glass walls allow the city to shine while you enjoy spirits and snacks. Active military and veterans with valid ID can participate in the “Squadron Shot” tradition that’s been passed along since World War II. If you participate don’t forget to sign the log book.

Marin Headlands

Just across the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands offer a spectacular vantage point for viewing San Francisco’s skyline. You may even get some unique views as the fog comes in over the bay! Hawk Hill, in particular, provides an unparalleled perspective of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge, especially when illuminated against the night sky.

A former military fortification, Battery Spencer boasts some of the most iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. As night falls, the city’s lights create a dazzling backdrop, making this spot a must-visit for any San Francisco night view enthusiast.

Coming from San Francisco you’ll drive north across the Golden Gate Bridge to take the Alexander Avenue exit. Follow Alexander Avenue to Conzelman Road and pick your spot for the view of your choice. For those of you who are interested in a hike and getting a more isolated viewpoint, then Slacker Ridge provides a great view after a short but steep hike. Kirby Cove is another more off-the-beaten-path spot but it requires a mile-long hike on a dirt road that comes off from Battery Spenser.

Golden Gate Overlook

Located within the Presidio, the Golden Gate Overlook is a popular spot to enjoy a fantastic view of the Golden Gate Bridge, with the San Francisco skyline in the background. At night, the bridge’s glowing lights create a mesmerizing spectacle, making this location an ideal place to take in the city’s beauty.

San Francisco Night Views: Iconic Landmarks and Attractions

Golden Gate Bridge

For an up-close encounter with the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, make your way to Crissy Field or Marshall’s Beach. These open spots offer expansive views of the illuminated bridge against the backdrop of the San Francisco skyline, creating a truly unforgettable experience

Bay Bridge

The Bay Bridge is another architectural feat that comes alive at night. The Bay Lights, an impressive LED light installation, transforms the bridge into an entertaining light show. Head over to the Embarcadero or Treasure Island for the best views of this dazzling spectacle.

Alcatraz Island

For an intriguing nighttime experience, consider joining an Alcatraz night tour. Each tour includes a narrated boat tour out to the island and then a guided tour from the dock to the prison. As you explore the infamous former prison under the cover of darkness, you’ll learn about its chilling history while taking in the sunset and stunning views of the San Francisco skyline from the island.

Lombard Street

Lombard Street, known as the “crookedest street in the world,” offers a charming nighttime experience as the city lights illuminate its winding curves. Take a leisurely stroll or drive slowly down this famous street and enjoy the lovely gardens and beautiful houses that line its path.

Sutro Baths and Cliff House

The Sutro Baths, once a grand public bathhouse, is now a captivating historic site that offers gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. At night, the moonlit waves crashing against the ruins create a mesmerizing and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a romantic evening or a peaceful solo adventure

Fisherman’s Wharf

Fisherman’s Wharf is a bustling hub of activity both day and night. As the sun sets, the area comes alive with street performers, seafood vendors, and lively attractions. Enjoy the festive atmosphere while taking in the views of the bay, Alcatraz Island, and the city skyline.

Cable Cars

No visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the iconic cable cars. As you traverse the city’s steep hills, the cable cars offer a unique perspective on the city lights and landmarks, making for a memorable nighttime adventure. You can buy tickets at the cable car turnarounds or pay cash once you are on. You can also use the MuniMobile app to purchase passes or tickets ahead of time.

City Hall

San Francisco’s City Hall is a magnificent Beaux-Arts building that dazzles at night with its illuminated dome and elegant facade. Take a stroll around the Civic Center Plaza to admire this architectural gem and the surrounding government buildings.

San Francisco Districts and Neighborhoods

Explore the area’s bars, and wonderful restaurants, like El Techo for great food, drinks, and rooftop views, as well as the area art galleries for a taste of San Francisco’s creative spirit.

Financial District

The illuminated buildings create a dazzling display of modern architecture, and the area’s upscale bars and restaurants provide a sophisticated setting for a night out on the town. Enjoy a meal at the iconic Wayfare Tavern housed in a building that dates back to the reconstruction that took place after the 1906 earthquake and devastating fires that wiped out much of the city. After your meal, stroll along the Embarcadero for sweeping views of the Bay Bridge and its fun light installation, or explore the hidden gems tucked away in the narrow alleys of this bustling district.

Best Time the Enjoy San Francisco’s Night Views

To make the most of San Francisco’s sparkling night views, it’s best to plan your outings on clear days. San Francisco is famous for its fog that rolls in over 100 days a year on average. And summer is a frequent offender with dense fog obscuring the cityscape and limiting visibility. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, trying to avoid what locals call “June Gloom” and seize the opportunity when the skies are clear to fully appreciate the city’s beauty.

The winter months offer unique experiences for enjoying San Francisco’s night views. During the winter, the city lights shine against the crisp, cool air, and holiday decorations add a festive touch to the already enchanting atmosphere. Consider a visit to Union Square in winter to see the tree lighting and Macy’s windows decorated with wreaths!

While San Francisco’s night views can be enjoyed any time after dark, there’s something magical about witnessing the transition from day to night. Plan your visit to scenic viewpoints or popular attractions during the late afternoon or early evening, and watch as the city lights begin to twinkle, casting a warm glow over the bustling streets below.

Final Tips and Recommendations

Parking in San Francisco can be challenging, particularly in popular tourist areas. To avoid the stress of finding a spot, consider using public transportation, ride-sharing services, or even biking to your destination. If driving is your preferred mode of transportation, research nearby parking lots or garages in advance and be prepared for potential parking fees. Surprisingly the Union Square underground garage right in front of Macy’s can have some of the most affordable parking rates. But because of that, the lot fills up quickly so if that’s your desired spot, get there early.

While some of the city’s best night views can be found at popular tourist attractions, or trendy night spots that lead to big bucks, don’t overlook lesser-known spots and hidden gems we’ve highlighted in this post. Exploring off-the-beaten-path locations can lead to unique and unforgettable experiences, and often provide a more intimate and authentic perspective on the city’s beauty. They don’t hurt the budget as much either.

Be sure to follow up this article with research on the most up-to-date ways to access main attractions, as some may have specific entrance requirements or limited hours. For example, certain parks or viewpoints may close earlier, as Coit Tower was mentioned earlier. Being aware of these details will ensure that you make the most of your nighttime adventures in San Francisco. With careful planning, a spirit of adventure, and a keen eye for beauty, you’ll be well on your way to creating unforgettable memories under the city lights.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Southeast Alaska

Southeast Alaska, known for its breathtaking fjords and the largest forest in the United States the Tongass National Forest, is a popular destination for Alaskan cruises. During the summer months, daytime highs in this region typically range between 55°F to 65°F (13°C to 18°C), with rainy days being quite common. To ensure a comfortable trip, pack waterproof gear, and a warm layer, and be prepared for the possibility of cooler temperatures and bad weather.

Southcentral Alaska

Southcentral Alaska boasts a milder climate than other parts of the state, with Anchorage and surrounding areas experiencing relatively warm days with daytime highs from 60°F to 70°F (16°C to 21°C) during the summer. This region is known for its majestic mountains, glaciers, and an abundance of wildlife. Be sure to pack lightweight layers, such as a light jacket, sun protection, and insect repellent for optimal comfort during your outdoor adventures.

Denali National Park and surrounding areas

Home to the tallest peak in North America, Denali National Park is a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Summer months bring long days, mild temperatures, and in the latest part of summer, the chance to witness the awe-inspiring northern lights. However, higher elevations can result in cooler temperatures and rapidly changing weather conditions. Pack versatile clothing, items to create warmer layers including warm hats, wool socks, and long sleeves, which can accommodate these fluctuations.

Arctic Circle and Gates of the Arctic National Park

For the truly adventurous, the Arctic Circle and Gates of the Arctic National Park offer a glimpse into the remote and wild landscapes of northern Alaska. Summer here in the untouched wilderness sees 24 hours of daylight, known as the Land of the Midnight Sun, with daytime highs ranging from 40°F to 60°F (4°C to 16°C). Don’t forget to pack long underwear, waterproof gloves, and a warm coat to stay cozy during your Arctic journey.

Clothing and Layering Tips for Alaska’s Summer Climate

When it comes to dressing for Alaska’s varied climate, the most important thing is to pack layers. This will allow you to easily adjust your clothing based on the weather conditions and your activity level.

Base Layer

Merino Wool: Opt for merino wool as your base layer, as it’s a lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking material. Merino wool helps regulate body temperature and keeps you warm, even when wet.

Long Underwear: In cooler temperatures and higher elevations, long underwear (tops and bottoms) is a smart choice for added warmth and insulation.

Mid-layer

Fleece Jacket: A fleece jacket is a versatile mid-layer that provides excellent warmth without adding bulk. It’s perfect for cooler evenings and can easily be removed if temperatures rise during your outdoor activities.

Long-sleeve Shirts: a long-sleeved shirt offers sun protection and can be layered under a fleece jacket or rain shell. Look for lightweight, quick-drying materials to stay comfortable during your Alaskan adventures.

Outer Layer

Waterproof and Breathable Rain Gear: A good rain jacket is essential for Alaska’s unpredictable weather. Opt for one that’s both waterproof and breathable. That outer shell will help you to stay dry and comfortable during rainy days or water activities.

Rain Pants and Snow Pants: Rain pants are helpful for extended outdoor excursions in wet conditions, while snow pants can provide extra warmth and protection in colder areas, like the Arctic Circle, or at higher elevations.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Footwear and Accessories for Alaska’s Summer Adventures

Waterproof Hiking Boots with Good Traction

We can’t just have any old pair of shoes here. Investing in a pair of waterproof hiking boots with good traction is essential for your Alaskan adventure. Whether you’re trekking through Denali National Park or exploring the rugged terrain of Southeast Alaska, quality hiking boots will keep your feet dry and provide the support needed for various outdoor activities. Remember, good footwear is a must for making the most of your dream trip.

Wool Socks and Extra Pairs

Pair your hiking boots with moisture-wicking wool socks for added comfort and warmth. Wool socks are a great option as they provide insulation, even when wet. Be sure to pack extra pairs in case they get damp during your journey. Alternatively, you can plan for laundry service to be sure you always have a dry pair on hand. After all, dry and warm feet are key to enjoying any walk or hike.

Warm Hat and Lightweight Gloves

A warm hat and lightweight gloves are essential accessories for Alaska’s varying climate. While the summer months generally bring mild temperatures, higher elevations and parts of northern Alaska can experience cooler conditions. Having these items on hand is a great way to stay cozy during those chilly early mornings and long days of exploration.

Sleep Mask for Long Hours of Daylight

Getting off the plane at 11 o’clock at night and seeing the sun still shining in the sky is a jarring experience! In the Land of the Midnight Sun, a sleep mask is a must-have accessory for a restful night’s sleep. With up to 24 hours of daylight in some parts of Alaska, a sleep mask is a good option to help block out the bright summer nights and get the rest you need for your next day’s adventure. If staying at a home rental or a hotel you can call ahead to confirm that they have blackout curtains in the bedrooms.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Packing for an Alaskan Cruise

Alaskan cruises are a popular way to explore the breathtaking coastal scenery and experience the majestic wildlife of Southeast Alaska. It’s important to research and choose a cruise line and ship that best suit your preferences and needs, for example, more eco-friendly ships or more intimate cruise lines. Each cruise line offers different amenities, excursions, and onboard experiences, so it’s a good idea to compare your options before making a decision.

The first thing to remember is that many cruise ships have formal nights where guests are expected to dress up. Be sure to pack formal wear, such as a suit or cocktail dress, to ensure you’re prepared for these special evenings. It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-dressed when it comes to cruise ship etiquette.

For women, an Alaskan cruise packing list should include a mix of clothing items to accommodate both onboard activities and shore excursions. Essentials include short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, a lightweight sweater, a rain jacket, comfortable pants and a pair of shorts, a swimsuit for hot tub sessions, and appropriate footwear for outdoor activities. Don’t forget to pack any personal items and toiletries you may need during your cruise.

Many Alaskan cruises offer a range of outdoor activities and excursions, such as hiking, wildlife watching, and glacier tours. You may not spend much time on the ship! Be prepared with the right gear, including waterproof hiking boots, a day pack, rain gear, sun protection, insect repellent, and extra memory cards for your camera to capture those unforgettable moments. By packing smartly, you’ll be ready for any adventure that comes your way.

Outdoor Gear and Essentials for Alaska’s Summer Activities

Sun Protection

With long days and the sun sitting low on the horizon, sun protection is crucial during your Alaskan summer adventure. Alaska may not be known for hot summers like you are used to back home but be sure to pack broad-spectrum sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Additionally, pack lip balm with SPF to prevent chapped lips in cooler, windy conditions.

Insect Repellent

Alaska’s wilderness is home to various insects, including mosquitoes, during the summer months. Ensure you pack insect repellent to keep those pesky bugs at bay, allowing you to fully enjoy your outdoor activities without distraction.

Reusable Water Bottle and Dry Bag

Staying hydrated is essential during any adventure, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill during your excursions. A dry bag is also a useful item to keep your belongings safe and dry during water activities or unexpected rain showers.

Day Pack and Lightweight Rain Gear

Seeing the sun out even late at night energizes you. At least it did for us! So be prepared to take advantage of that extra energy and plan to spend longer amounts of time outdoors. A comfortable, lightweight day pack is ideal for carrying your essentials during hikes, wildlife watching, and other outdoor excursions. Additionally, pack lightweight rain gear, such as a packable rain jacket or plastic ponchos, to be prepared for any sudden weather changes.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Photography and Memory Preservation

Alaska offers a wealth of stunning landscapes and unforgettable wildlife encounters, so you’ll want to capture these memories with your camera. Bring extra memory cards and batteries to ensure you have enough storage and power to document your entire trip.

To make the most of your photography opportunities, consider researching the best times and locations for capturing Alaska’s most beautiful places, such as glaciers, and wildlife. The best time to see the northern lights begins in August and lasts until April so if you’re summer trip means coming at the end of August or early September you are in luck. Practice different camera settings and techniques to help you capture the perfect shot, and don’t forget to enjoy the moment and fully immerse yourself in Alaska’s natural wonders.

Packing for Road Trips and Tours in Alaska

Working with Tour Operators and Choosing the Right Gear

Alaska offers various guided tours and road trip opportunities, from wildlife safaris to glacier hikes. We enjoyed an amazing river rafting experience with a local guide group. Coming in the summer can mean you are supporting locals who often don’t have work in Alaska during the winter months. Collaborate with tour operators to ensure you have the necessary gear and clothing for your specific adventure. The good news is that they are happy to provide an expert tip or two on what to expect and how to prepare for your chosen excursion.

Preparing for Early Mornings and Long Days

Many Alaskan tours and activities begin early in the morning. There are easy ways to be prepared. Be sure to have warm clothing and gear for those crisp, early hours. Layering is essential, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Be ready to adapt your clothing and gear to ensure you stay comfortable during your Alaskan adventure. Bring snacks that will keep you energized throughout the day. A pit stop at the local Costco at the beginning of our trip guaranteed we had snacks and drinks in the car ready to go should we ever need them.

Planning for the Unexpected and Packing Extra Items

Alaska’s unpredictable weather and rugged terrain can sometimes lead to unexpected surprises. Our hike along Exit Glacier was warm but the closer you get to the ice of the glacier and the closer you get to the peak, the cooler the weather becomes. That light jacket wrapped around your waist or stuffed in your backpack will come in handy.

Pack extra items, such as a first-aid kit, flashlight, and emergency blanket, to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. We sadly came across a hiker who had stumbled and fallen on a rather intense trail. Thankfully by the time we came to him a passerby with a first aid kit had come to his aid and was able to cover his wounds and apply pressure while they waited for park rangers to get help to him. It’s always better to be over-prepared, ensuring your dream trip remains enjoyable and safe.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Making the Most of Alaska’s Summer Months

Summer in Alaska is truly a unique and magical time, thanks to phenomena like the Land of the Midnight Sun and the mesmerizing Aurora Borealis. To fully experience these natural wonders, plan your activities and excursions during the optimal time of year and in locations known for their impressive displays.

Equipped with the right clothing and gear, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in Alaska’s diverse landscape and make the most of your outdoor activities. From hiking in Denali National Park to kayaking among glaciers, the proper attire and equipment will help you stay comfortable, safe, and ready to embrace all that Alaska has to offer.

Alaska’s landscape can be both challenging and rewarding. To make the most of your trip, consider seeking expert advice from local guides, tour operators, or fellow travelers who are all a part of online groups such as Facebook Alaska travel groups. Think of this as crowdsourcing the best advice from everyone in the group. They can provide invaluable tips for navigating an Alaska road trip or engaging with Alaska’s varied terrain and climate, ensuring your trip is as enjoyable and memorable as possible. By joining one of these online groups you can benefit from all of their experiences.

Remember the key to a successful and unforgettable Alaska summer adventure lies in a well-prepared packing list. From clothing and gear to personal items and accessories, it’s crucial to anticipate your needs and be ready for the unique challenges and experiences that Alaska presents.

With proper planning, the right gear, and a sense of adventure, your dream trip to Alaska can become a reality. Embrace the unparalleled beauty of the Last Frontier, and let your summer journey to Alaska be one you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Best time to visit Utah’s national parks

The best time to visit Utah’s national parks varies depending on your preferences. Summer months (June to August) are the high season, offering warm temperatures and longer daylight hours, ideal for hiking and other popular activities. However, expect larger crowds and potentially limited parking during this time. The shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) provide pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making them a great option for those seeking a more peaceful experience. Winter months (December to February) offer a unique, snowy perspective on the parks but may have limited accessibility due to weather conditions. We chose to follow this national parks road trip itinerary during the spring. This was the best way for us to enjoy good weather as well as avoid the crowds.

Preparing for the Road Trip

Rental car options and considerations

When planning your Utah national parks road trip, choosing the right rental car is crucial. Las Vegas offers numerous rental car agencies, providing a wide range of vehicles to suit your needs. Consider factors such as the number of passengers, luggage capacity, fuel efficiency, and vehicle type (sedan, SUV, or van) before making a decision. Additionally, ensure you have a valid driver’s license and are aware of any additional costs, such as insurance and one-way rental fees, before booking your rental car. For example, if you choose to fly into Las Vegas and rent a car there, but catch your return flight out of Salt Lake City then you will have an additional cost of a one-way rental to add to your budget. We did this as the convenience was worth the additional expense for our circumstances.

Additional costs to consider

While planning your road trip, be mindful of additional costs you may incur during your journey. These can include park entrance fees, accommodation expenses, healthy food options and drinks, guided tours, and gas expenses. Creating a budget beforehand and researching ways to save, such as purchasing an America the Beautiful pass can help you enjoy your trip without breaking the bank. The America the Beautiful national park pass costs $80 and is valid for one year from the month of purchase. The lifetime senior pass is also $80 and is available to US citizens and permanent residents 62 years and older. This extra cost is a good option as it can save the pass holder quite a bit of money if planning to visit multiple parks that charge admission fees.

Packing essentials for the trip

Packing the right essentials for your Utah national parks road trip will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Make sure to include items such as proper clothing and footwear for varying weather conditions, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, reusable water bottles, snacks, and a cooler for perishables. Additionally, pack essential gear for outdoor activities, such as hiking shoes, hats, and trekking poles, if needed. And on a road trip packed with this much natural beauty one of the best things you can bring is your camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking landscapes and wonderful memories.

A. Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend

If you have some extra time during your Utah national parks road trip, consider visiting Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend, both located near the city of Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon, a stunning slot canyon, is renowned for its incredible sandstone formations and light beams that illuminate the canyon walls. Access to Antelope Canyon is available only through guided tours led by Navajo guides. Horseshoe Bend, a short drive from Antelope Canyon, offers a breathtaking view of the Colorado River as it wraps around a sandstone cliff, creating a horseshoe-shaped bend.

B. Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

Lake Powell, situated in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, is a fantastic destination for water enthusiasts, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. Additionally, there are several beautiful hiking trails and scenic drives throughout the recreation area. Glen Canyon Dam, located nearby, is an impressive engineering feat worth visiting as well.

C. Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon Village

Extending your road trip to include Grand Canyon National Park is a great option if you have the time. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon, with its accessible viewpoints and well-maintained trails, is the most popular area to visit. Grand Canyon Village, located within the park, offers accommodations, dining options, and visitor services, making it a great place for exploring the canyon’s beauty.

D. Great options for additional state parks and national monuments

There are numerous other state parks and national monuments to explore in the region, such as Natural Bridges National Monument, Bears Ears National Monument, and Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. These locations offer unique landscapes, cultural history, and outdoor recreation opportunities that can enhance your road trip experience.

Returning to Las Vegas or Salt Lake City International Airport

As your epic Utah national parks road trip comes to an end, you’ll have the option to return to Las Vegas or continue to Salt Lake City International Airport. The drive time and route will depend on your final destination, but either choice offers opportunities for additional sightseeing or stops at state parks and national monuments.

Inspired by your Utah national parks road trip, you may be eager to plan more adventures across the United States. As you consider future road trips, whether they be a coastal adventure up the PCH or a wild opportunity to explore a slice of Alaska, remember the importance of thorough research, taking the time to learn about the best times to visit, packing essentials, and planning your route to make the most of your journey.

Vacations can suffer last-minute changes. We’ve all experienced it. You have a choice – you can either cancel it all. Take the hit and walk away. Or you can find a way to make the most of what you CAN do. That was us just last year. We had a week planned for visiting Maui. This was our first time on the island and it was supposed to kick off Christmas Break. But then vacation dates moved as they sometimes can do. And just like that, our week changed to a long weekend.

Regardless of how long you have, if you’re planning a vacation to Maui, you’ve come to the right place because we’re about to share all of our top picks for things to do on this magical Hawaiian island. From exploring Haleakala National Park, taking a drive along the Road to Hana, and snorkeling with sea turtles, there’s something for everyone here—whether you want an adrenaline and adventure-filled getaway or some serious beach-lounging. We’ll also help you decide when you should visit Maui for optimal sunny days and activities that may be out of reach at certain times of the year. So pack your bags and join us on a tour through one of Hawaii’s most beloved islands!

But there’s one consideration before we get started – something called a carrying capacity study.

What’s A Carrying Capacity Study?

As responsible travelers, it’s crucial to be mindful of our impact on the environment and local communities. A carrying capacity study is a study that reflects on a population’s size and impact on local factors such as environment, food, and water. It helps us understand the maximum number of visitors an area can sustain without causing harm to the ecosystem or diminishing the quality of life for residents. At the time of writing, Maui residents and some local officials backed a plan to study tourism carrying capacity at popular tourist destinations around the island. Keeping this in mind, we encourage you to explore Maui with respect and consideration for its natural beauty and culture.

Getting to Maui

Kahului Airport (OGG) serves as the main gateway to Maui, welcoming travelers from across the United States and the world. Located in central Maui, the airport is conveniently situated near many popular attractions, making it the ideal starting point for your island adventure. Most major airlines operate flights to and from Kahului Airport, so finding a suitable connection should be a breeze. You can also island hop from this airport and extend your Hawaiian vacation to other islands, such as Oahu or Kauai, in the archipelago.

Best Time to Visit

Maui is a year-round destination with pleasant weather and activities available to visitors across the year. However, depending on your interests, some seasons may be more appealing than others. From December (when we visited) to April, humpback whales migrate to Maui’s warm waters. This is a fantastic time of year for whale watching.

How Many Days in Maui Do We Need?

All of the available activities and attractions could easily fill up a week or more. However, for those with limited time visiting Maui, like we were, it’s important to plan accordingly to make the most of your stay. The Road to Hana takes a full day to complete, while Haleakala National Park can also take a full day depending on chosen hikes. Snorkeling especially if done on your own at a beach nearby your lodging, can be a half day or just a couple of hours. A scenic drive on Highway 340 can take a half day.

To see the most and best of Maui, it’s recommended to spend at least a week on the island. However, if you have a shorter stay, you can still experience some of the best the island has to offer with our Top 5 recommended activities.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

TL;DR Our Top 5 Recommended Activities

If you only have a few days in Maui, it can be overwhelming to try to fit in all the must-see attractions. Our Top 5 recommended activities are a great place to start.

Visit Haleakala National Park, where you can witness the sunrise or sunset from the top of the volcano.

Support local vendors and eat shave ice, a refreshing and delicious treat that’s a must-try on the island.

Combine a day at the beach with snorkeling on your own, one of the best ways to experience Maui’s vibrant marine life.

Enjoy the scenic drive on Highway 340, which offers stunning views of the coast and countryside.

Hike the Acid Trail on your way to check out the Nakalele Blowhole, a natural wonder that creates a powerful spray of water as waves crash into the rocks.

Reservations to Make in Advance

Certain activities on Maui require reservations in advance, especially during peak season. If you’re planning to witness the sunrise from Haleakala National Park, be sure to make your reservation 60 days in advance. Iao Valley State Park will also start requiring reservations for out-of-state visitors starting May 1st, 2023.

Ziplining tours and fine dining reservations at upscale spots like Lahaina Grill, Mama’s Fish House, and Merriman’s Kapalua should also be made in advance to ensure availability. Snorkeling tours and surf lessons can book up quickly, so it’s recommended to book with your vendor ahead of time. Additionally, if you’re interested in taking a helicopter tour of the island, it’s best to book in advance. By making reservations with a local vendor in advance, you can ensure that you don’t miss out on any of the must-see activities during your stay in Maui.

Getting to Know the Island One Region At a Time

West Maui Mountains

Home to the lush Iao Valley State Park, West Maui Mountains offer a plethora of hiking trails, amazing views, and a deep connection with nature. Here, you can also visit historic sites, and hear about King Kamehameha, who united the Hawaiian Islands in the early 19th century.

South Maui

South Maui is synonymous with luxury and relaxation. Wailea Beach Resort offers pristine beaches, upscale accommodations, and world-class amenities, including tennis courts and golf courses. Tee off on some of the finest greens while taking in the stunning ocean views.

East Maui

East Maui is perhaps best known for the iconic Hana Highway, a scenic drive that takes you through rich green rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic coastal cliffs. Along the way, you’ll encounter enchanting black sand beaches, where the warm waters invite you to take a refreshing dip.

Central Maui

Central Maui is the cultural heart of the island, housing the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, which hosts various events, performances, and exhibitions throughout the year. As mentioned earlier, Kahului Airport, the main hub for arrivals and departures, is also located in this region.

North Shore

The North Shore of Maui is famous for its charming beach towns, vibrant marine life, and laid-back vibes. Here, you can spot sea turtles sleeping in the sun, enjoy unique ocean experiences, and indulge in the local cuisine at one of the many beachfront eateries.

Upcountry Maui

Finally, Upcountry Maui is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The crown jewel of this region is Haleakala National Park, home to the dormant Haleakala volcano, which offers one-of-a-kind views of the island’s diverse landscapes. While exploring Upcountry Maui, make sure to visit local farms that produce fresh fruits, vegetables, and other delicacies. Sample some of the island’s finest produce, and support the community by purchasing their goods. This region is also known for its paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture, which you can find on display at Makawao in its History Museum. This makes for a great stop on your way up to, or down from Haleakala National Park.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Experience Maui’s Culture

A visit to Maui isn’t complete without delving into the island’s rich cultural heritage. Traditional Hawaiian customs, legends, and practices continue to thrive and play an integral part in daily life. Experience the warmth of the aloha spirit, learn about the people’s history, and savor the flavors of traditional Hawaiian cuisine.

Cultural centers and historic buildings abound on the island and provide a glimpse into Maui’s past. Notable sites include the Hana Cultural Museum, Bailey House Museum in Wailuku, Lahaina’s Baldwin Home, and the Lahaina Heritage Museum or the Wo Hing Museum focused on Chinese immigration to the island, each offering a unique perspective on the island’s history and the people who migrated here.

Outdoor Adventures

Maui is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering countless opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural world. From the dense, tropical rainforests of the Hana coast to the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Haleakala National Park, there are trails for every skill level and interest. One popular hike is the Pipiwai Trail, which leads you through a lush bamboo forest and ends at the majestic Waimoku Falls. A very different trail is the Sliding Sands Trail, which takes you into the depths of the Haleakala crater, offering fascinating views of the once-active volcanic landscape.

The island’s crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life make Maui an ideal destination for snorkeling and diving. Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or a beginner, you’ll be amazed by the underwater wonders that await. Top spots for snorkeling include Molokini Crater, a partially submerged volcanic crater teeming with colorful fish. With this option, you can join a guided boat tour that will take you to the snorkeling sites.

But to explore the ocean’s hidden treasures without the crowds, you may wish to snorkel on your own. Honolua Bay in West Maui is a protected marine life area that you can explore on your own. Just follow a short trail through a forested area to reach the rocky shores of the bay. When we visited there was a food truck right across the road and we grabbed amazing smoothies before hitting the bay.

Or consider Maluaka Beach, or Turtle Town, where you have a better chance to swim alongside friendly green sea turtles. We also had amazing snorkeling with turtles experiences at Black Rock at Kaanapali Beach in West Maui. We recommend you start your snorkeling early in the morning as this beach is very close to resorts and can get crowded. Consider water conditions as well and snorkel only when the waters are calm to avoid strong currents.

Maui’s outdoor adventures don’t end there; from ziplining through lush canopies to horseback riding across the rolling hills of Upcountry Maui, the island has something for every nature lover. So, grab your hiking boots or your snorkeling gear (or both!) and enjoy your time on the island that truly has something for everybody.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Tips for Travelers

To make the most of your time in Maui, it’s essential to plan your trip wisely. With so much to see and do, it’s easy to become overwhelmed, but a little organization can go a long way. Begin by prioritizing the activities and attractions that excite you the most, and allocate sufficient time to explore them without feeling rushed. If you’re short on time, consider focusing on one or two regions of the island, rather than attempting to cover everything in one visit.

Don’t forget to leave room for spontaneity – some of the best experiences come from unplanned moments, like stumbling upon a hidden beach or enjoying a breathtaking sunset from an unexpected vantage point. Finally, talk to locals and other travelers for recommendations and insider tips. They may guide you to hidden gems that you won’t find in guidebooks, making your trip even more memorable. Like the amazing Maui Wines, the only winery on Maui.

As we wrap up our travel guide to the enchanting island of Maui, it’s clear that this tropical paradise is the perfect destination for travelers seeking unique experiences and unforgettable memories. With its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and a myriad of outdoor adventures, Maui is truly a place where we recognize our need to respect this island and its residents as we travel to their home.

It’s crucial to remember the importance of respecting its carrying capacity and preserving its natural resources. By doing so, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to experience the magic of Maui for themselves. So, whether you’re exploring the depths of the Haleakala crater, snorkeling alongside sea turtles, or immersing yourself in the island’s vibrant cultural heritage, always remember to tread lightly and cherish the wonders of this extraordinary destination.

Are there wineries in Maui? Believe it or not, there is serious wine-making happening on the islands! The spot for winemaking in Maui we highlight in this post dates back to the 19th century, when King Kalakaua, the last king of Hawaii, used to visit his friend and Maui resident James Makee. The area was known as Rose Ranch back then. Today’s Maui Wines tasting room is located at the King’s Cottage, which housed royalty and hosted many unforgettable parties that went on into the wee hours of the morning, earning the king the nickname of “merrie monarch”. However luxurious the parties, the wine-making industry did not truly take off until the 1970s, when C. Pardee Erdman planted a vineyard on what became Maui’s Ulupalakua Ranch and partnered with Emil Tedeschi to produce wines from Tedeschi vineyards in the rich volcanic soil of the island.

A wine enthusiast can create an entire road trip or vacation to wine destinations found in famous spots like Tuscany and Napa Valley. Hawaii does not immediately come to mind when thinking of wine. So the fact that the Hawaiian islands are able to produce their own showcases the islands’ ability to use their unique environment to create distinctive and delicious wines. Additionally, it reduces the need for importing wine from the mainland United States or other countries, contributing to a more sustainable local economy. And for us island fans who travel there to enjoy the beautiful tropical environment, it offers us a chance to experience a unique facet of Hawaiian culture and history.

Maui Wines

There are not multiple wineries in Maui. In fact, there are three wineries total in all of Hawaii, including Volcano Winery on the Big Island of Hawaii and Oeno Winemaking on Oahu. Maui Wines is the only Maui winery, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. A winery tour highlights the rich history that dates back to 1974, which I don’t want to say was a long time ago but if I’m being honest, it was. It was in the early 70s when C. Pardee Erdman planted a vineyard on the slopes of Maui’s Haleakala volcano. In partnership with Emil Tedeschi, the two began producing wine using the volcanic soil of the island. And in the spirit of “No time like the present,” they didn’t waste a second and honed their wine-making skills with the materials they had. While they waited for the grapes to mature, they used a local fruit that was plentiful and at their disposal, pineapple, to make wine.

Today, Maui Wines, less than 30 minutes drive from Kahului, offers visitors a full tasting experience that includes multiple wine offerings, a tasting menu, and the option to enjoy a self-guided and free tour of the historic estate. Many of the original buildings still exist and have been repurposed to complement the practical production area of Maui Wines. The winery is most famous for its pineapple wines, including Maui Blanc, a dry white wine, Maui Splash, a sweeter wine, and O Hula Maui, a sparkling wine. A unique fruit wine, no matter which you choose, captures the essence of Maui’s tropical environment and offers a refreshing taste of the islands.

In addition to pineapple wines, Maui Wines also produces grape-based wines under the label of Rose Ranch. The winery’s grape-based wines include Lokelani, a sparkling rose, Kula White, a dry white wine, and Mele Red, a medium-bodied red wine. They’ve recently added their Estate wines, like the Chenin Blanc available exclusively at their on-site store, to the tasting menu as well. With a tasting room and outdoor lanai, Maui Wines offers a beautifully relaxed setting for visitors to enjoy their wine-tasting experience in island style.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Visitors can order a wine tasting and small plates that perfectly match their wines, in the King’s Cottage tasting room. Tours of the historic estate encourage visitors to enjoy the grounds and appreciate how modern-day and historic past have been brought together in an eclectic and purposeful mix. The renovated space compliments the history room, where you can discover the various transformations that have happened at the Ulupalakua Ranch over the years, in addition to the original mango wood wine bar and live music on the King’s Cottage lanai.

There is also the option to join a tasting at The Old Jail, a weathered stone building that literally once served as a jail on the property, which is now serving from their smaller collections of wine. Wine-tasting sessions include in-depth explanations of the history of wine production on the property and visitors get introduced to special selections that are different from those available at King’s Cottage.

As the winery has matured so has its selection. They have expanded to single varietals of Syrah, Grenache, and Voigner just to name a few.

Upcountry Maui and its Significance to Maui’s Wine Industry

Upcountry Maui is the highest-elevation farming region in the state of Hawaii and is home to a variety of crops, including the grapes used in winemaking. The region’s unique geography and climate provide the perfect location and ideal growing conditions for grapes, which thrive in the rich volcanic soil and cooler temperatures. The volcanic soil also provides the grapes with essential minerals and nutrients, giving them a distinct and flavorful taste.

Fruit wines and other unique wines

In addition to grape wines, Maui’s winemakers also produce a variety of fruit wines, including a raspberry dessert wine. Their own wines are made using locally-sourced fruit and honey, giving them a unique taste that reflects the flavors of the islands. Raspberry wine is a popular choice among visitors and pairs well with the tropical fruits and flavors found in the country’s 50th state.

The winery is open Tuesday – Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM. Reservations are strongly encouraged to schedule a 90-minute tasting. You can book early starting approximately 90 days before your arrival. Tasting flights cost $12 – $15 and wines by the glass vary from $6 to $20. The tasting menu changes frequently.

While wine production on the islands is not for the faint of heart, the work they are doing at Maui Wines may inspire others to add to the wineries in Maui. For those of us who appreciate a local spin on a great glass of wine, Maui Wines does not disappoint and is worth the visit.

Day 1: French Quarter Exploration

New Orleans is a city that is full of excitement and wonder, with something for everyone to enjoy. For families with teens, there is no shortage of adventure to be found in the historic French Quarter. The area is filled with interesting architecture, unique culture, and delicious food, making it the perfect place to start your weekend in New Orleans. Here’s a guide to a perfect day in the French Quarter with your teens.

Start your day off right with a visit to the iconic Cafe du Monde, a landmark that is over 150 years old. Just follow the trail of powdered sugar on the sidewalk that leads right up to this world-famous spot. The open-air cafe is famous for its hot and fluffy beignets, which are delicious French-style doughnuts covered in powdered sugar. Grab a table, or sit on a bench in the park across the street and watch the world go by as you enjoy these sweet treats and a cup of their signature chicory coffee.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the French Quarter, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. This area is filled with historic buildings and narrow streets, and it’s easy to get lost in the magic of the place. Your teens will love exploring the nooks and crannies of the city’s oldest neighborhood, discovering hidden courtyards and picturesque balconies.

Next, stop by the French Quarter Visitor Center for Jean Lafitte to learn more about the history of the area. The center offers historical exhibits and guided walking tours that explore the fascinating past of this iconic neighborhood. Your teens will be captivated by the stories of pirates, smugglers, and voodoo queens that once roamed these streets.

For lunch, head over to Central Grocery, a family-owned deli that has been serving up delicious sandwiches since 1906. The store is famous for its muffuletta, a sandwich made with Italian cold cuts, cheese, and a tangy olive salad, served on a round loaf of bread. Take your sandwich to go and have a picnic in one of the nearby parks.

After lunch, explore the French Market, a colorful and bustling open-air market that has been operating since the late 1700s. The market features a variety of vendors selling everything from local produce to candy to handmade crafts, and it’s a great place to find unique souvenirs and gifts to take home.

New Orleans is one of the most famously food-centric cities in the United States. Finish off your day in the French Quarter with a hearty meal at Mother’s Restaurant, a New Orleans institution that has been serving up classic Creole and Cajun dishes since 1938. The menu is full of delicious options, including their famous Ferdi Special, a sandwich made with roast beef, ham, debris, and gravy. Your teens will love the lively atmosphere and the chance to try some of the city’s most iconic dishes. Or you can grab a meal at the Acme Oyster House where our family feasted on chargrilled oysters, po-boys, gumbo, and platters of local specialties.

Exploring the French Quarter is a must-do experience for anyone visiting New Orleans, and it’s the perfect way to kick off a weekend in the city. With delicious food, interesting history, and plenty of opportunities for adventure, your teens will be sure to have a blast in this iconic neighborhood.

Day 2: Outdoor Adventures and History in New Orleans

Welcome to day 2 of your teen-approved adventures in New Orleans! Today we will be exploring the city’s rich history and enjoying some outdoor adventures.

Start your day off right with a hearty breakfast at Elizabeth’s Restaurant. This cozy spot on Gallier Street is known for its delicious Southern-style breakfast dishes. Don’t miss their famous praline bacon!

World War II Museum New Orleans

After breakfast, make your way to the National WWII Museum. This was one of our favorite experiences in the city. The world-renowned museum offers an immersive experience that brings the history of World War II to life. From interactive exhibits to personal stories, this museum is a must-see for history buffs of all ages. I found myself standing in front of a few of these exhibits unable to walk away as I listened to first-person accounts of what it was like to land on the Normandy coast on D-Day. The way they cover in great detail, not just the war itself, but also the United States during the years leading up to the war, was amazing and added to the immersive nature of the museum experience.

For lunch, head to Willie Mae’s Scotch House. While they do have a location in California, this iconic restaurant has been serving up delicious Southern soul food in New Orleans for over 60 years. Be sure to try their famous fried chicken.

Get the Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

After lunch, make your way to City Park. This 1,300-acre park is home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, which features an impressive collection of over 40,000 objects, ranging from contemporary art to ancient artifacts. Take a stroll through the beautiful sculpture garden and enjoy the outdoor art installations.

End your day with dinner at Jacques-Imo’s Cafe. Check out their linked website here and if this looks like your kind of place, be sure to reserve up to one month in advance. This funky restaurant in the Uptown neighborhood is known for its delicious Creole and Cajun cuisine. Be sure to try their famous fried chicken with waffles. Want something you won’t find anywhere else? Get a fork ready for the alligator cheesecake. I personally have not tried it but I did hear good reviews. I leave that one up to you. Don’t forget to check out the colorful murals and eclectic decor!

Or you can enjoy a New Orleans classic at Camellia Grill. This NOLA institution was featured on Somebody Feed Phil. The affordable diner opened in 1946 and is famous for its breakfast omelets (served all day), burgers, and desserts.

Overall, day 2 is the perfect mix of history and outdoor adventure, with plenty of delicious food along the way. Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or just looking for some tasty Southern cuisine, New Orleans has something for everyone.

Day 3: Music and Culture in New Orleans

Start your day with a delicious breakfast or brunch at Ruby Slipper, a local favorite known for its tasty dishes and laid-back atmosphere. I live for a good Bennie and these guys know how to put a southern spin on this classic dish. Choose the Bayou Shrimp, Crawfish & Grits, or go more traditional. You can’t go wrong. And don’t stress if there’s a wait. You’re in good hands in New Orleans. We enjoyed walking the neighborhood while we waited for our table, as we discovered beautiful houses with gates still draped in bead necklaces left over from Mardi Gras.

After fueling up, head to the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park to learn about the city’s rich musical heritage. This park is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the origins and evolution of jazz, which has deep roots in New Orleans.

Next, take a streetcar ride through the charming Garden District. This historic neighborhood is filled with stunning architecture and beautiful gardens and is home to some of the city’s most impressive mansions. Take a stroll through the streets and admire the ornate houses, or stop by Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 to look through the gates at the above-ground tombs this area is so famous for. The cemetery has been closed for quite a few years and at the time of writing we are not sure when it will reopen again.

Get the Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

We just can’t stop talking about food and who can blame us because this is New Orleans! For lunch, head to Joey K’s, a local favorite that serves up classic New Orleans dishes like po’boys, gumbo, and red beans and rice. If you had brunch earlier, feel free to skip straight to exploring the Garden District.

In the evening, make your way to Commander’s Palace for dinner. This iconic restaurant has been a fixture in the Garden District for over 130 years and is known for its award-winning cuisine and elegant atmosphere. It’s a great place to enjoy a memorable meal and experience some of the city’s famous Southern hospitality. If you’d like to explore something less formal and “faaahhncy”, then head back to Decatur for Coop’s Place. This hole-in-the-wall spot boasts fantastic Creole dishes at a more affordable price.

Overall, this three-day itinerary provides a great introduction to all that New Orleans has to offer. Whether you’re interested in food, history, music, or just soaking up the unique culture of the city, there’s something for everyone here. So come on down to the Big Easy and let the good times roll!

New Orleans is a city that truly has something for everyone, including families with teens. With its unique blend of history, culture, music, and outdoor adventures, there’s never a dull moment. From exploring the French Quarter, visiting the National WWII Museum, and experiencing live jazz music, to indulging in delicious local cuisine, New Orleans has it all. And for those seeking a quieter side of the city, the Garden District provides a peaceful respite. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or longer, the Big Easy won’t disappoint. Come see for yourself why New Orleans is a top destination that you’ll want to come back to again and again.

The Quapaw were known for their use of the hot springs for medicinal purposes, and their word for the area, “Akakoracha,” means “the place of the healing waters.” They believed that the thermal waters had spiritual and healing powers, and used them for purification ceremonies and medicinal treatments. The Quapaw still maintain a presence in the area today, and visitors to the park can learn about their culture and history at the Quapaw Bathhouse and Cultural Center. It is important to acknowledge and honor the indigenous peoples who have called this land home for thousands of years.
