A Utah national parks itinerary from Las Vegas takes into consideration that Las Vegas is a popular tourist destination that serves as an excellent starting point. With its well-connected transportation network and numerous car rental options, embarking on a road trip from Las Vegas allows for easier access to Utah’s national parks. Moreover, Las Vegas offers a variety of entertainment, outdoor activities like Red Rock Canyon, and accommodation options to enjoy before and after your trip. By starting your adventure in Las Vegas, you can combine the excitement of the city with the breathtaking beauty of Utah’s natural wonders.

Best time to visit Utah’s national parks

The best time to visit Utah’s national parks varies depending on your preferences. Summer months (June to August) are the high season, offering warm temperatures and longer daylight hours, ideal for hiking and other popular activities. However, expect larger crowds and potentially limited parking during this time. The shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) provide pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making them a great option for those seeking a more peaceful experience. Winter months (December to February) offer a unique, snowy perspective on the parks but may have limited accessibility due to weather conditions. We chose to follow this national parks road trip itinerary during the spring. This was the best way for us to enjoy good weather as well as avoid the crowds. 

Preparing for the Road Trip

Rental car options and considerations

When planning your Utah national parks road trip, choosing the right rental car is crucial. Las Vegas offers numerous rental car agencies, providing a wide range of vehicles to suit your needs. Consider factors such as the number of passengers, luggage capacity, fuel efficiency, and vehicle type (sedan, SUV, or van) before making a decision. Additionally, ensure you have a valid driver’s license and are aware of any additional costs, such as insurance and one-way rental fees, before booking your rental car. For example, if you choose to fly into Las Vegas and rent a car there, but catch your return flight out of Salt Lake City then you will have an additional cost of a one-way rental to add to your budget. We did this as the convenience was worth the additional expense for our circumstances. 

Additional costs to consider

While planning your road trip, be mindful of additional costs you may incur during your journey. These can include park entrance fees, accommodation expenses, healthy food options and drinks, guided tours, and gas expenses. Creating a budget beforehand and researching ways to save, such as purchasing an America the Beautiful pass can help you enjoy your trip without breaking the bank. The America the Beautiful national park pass costs $80 and is valid for one year from the month of purchase. The lifetime senior pass is also $80 and is available to US citizens and permanent residents 62 years and older. This extra cost is a good option as it can save the pass holder quite a bit of money if planning to visit multiple parks that charge admission fees.  

Packing essentials for the trip

Packing the right essentials for your Utah national parks road trip will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Make sure to include items such as proper clothing and footwear for varying weather conditions, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, reusable water bottles, snacks, and a cooler for perishables. Additionally, pack essential gear for outdoor activities, such as hiking shoes, hats, and trekking poles, if needed. And on a road trip packed with this much natural beauty one of the best things you can bring is your camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking landscapes and wonderful memories.

Las Vegas to Zion National Park

Drive time and scenic route options

Embarking on your Utah national parks road trip from Las Vegas, the first destination is Zion National Park. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours and covers a distance of roughly 160 miles so getting an early start is very helpful. For a more scenic route, consider taking a slight detour to drive along the Virgin River Gorge, where you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the river and surrounding rock formations. This picturesque drive is sure to make your journey enjoyable.

Before reaching Zion National Park, consider stopping at Valley of Fire State Park, located just an hour from Las Vegas. This stunning park features vibrant red sandstone formations, petroglyphs, and unique hiking trails. Valley of Fire is one of the best places for a short hike or a picnic while taking in breathtaking landscapes. Don’t forget to take plenty of photos of the fiery rocks, which are particularly impressive during the early morning and late afternoon hours.

Zion National Park highlights

1. Upon arriving at Zion National Park, your first stop should be the visitor center, where you can gather essential information about the park, trail conditions, and shuttle services. During the high season, the park’s free round-trip shuttle service is mandatory for accessing popular trails and viewpoints, as private vehicles are restricted in certain areas. Plan your day around the shuttle schedule to ensure you make the most of your time at the park.

2. Zion National Park offers an array of hiking opportunities for all skill levels. Some of the best hikes include the challenging Angel’s Landing, which requires a permit but comes with stunning views from the top. The Narrows is a unique hike through the narrowest section of Zion Canyon. Visitors trek the shallow river waters and stand in awe of the sheer cliffs on each side.  Both hikes are popular attractions and can become crowded during peak times, so starting early is recommended.

Be sure to give yourself plenty of time and stop at various viewpoints along the way to fully appreciate the diverse scenery.

Bryce Canyon National Park highlights

1. Bryce Canyon National Park is known for its impressive hoodoos and one-of-a-kind viewpoints. Some of the best spots to take in the views are Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, and Inspiration Point. Each of these locations offers a unique perspective on the park’s remarkable geological formations, and they’re especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset. The short walk from the parking lot along a paved pathway makes these spots as accessible as they are beautiful. 
2. Bryce Canyon National Park offers various hiking trails suitable for all skill levels. The Rim Trail, 5.5-mile hike which runs along the edge of the canyon, offers stunning views of the hoodoos below and can be accessed from several points, which (good news!) makes it easy to customize the length of your hike. Another popular option is the Navajo Loop, which takes you down into the heart of the canyon, providing an up-close look at the park’s iconic rock formations. Be sure to check trail conditions at the visitor center before embarking on your hike.

3. Aside from the main viewpoints and popular hikes, Bryce Canyon National Park also features lesser-known attractions worth exploring. Wall Street, a narrow canyon filled with towering hoodoos, is one such hidden gem. Accessible via the Navajo Loop trail, this unique spot provides an opportunity to experience the park’s beauty away from the crowds.

Continuing your Utah national parks road trip, the journey from Bryce Canyon National Park to Capitol Reef National Park takes approximately two and a half hours, covering a distance of around 125 miles. While that may not seem like much time, this drive offers stunning views and diverse landscapes along Scenic Byway 12, widely considered one of the most beautiful drives in the United States. Be sure to allocate extra time to stop at various viewpoints and soak in the magnificent scenery along the way.

As you travel along Scenic Byway 12, you’ll pass through the vast Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, a protected area known for its unique geological features, including slot canyons and colorful cliffs. This expansive monument offers countless opportunities for hiking, canyoneering, and photography, making it worth a day trip on its own but for our itinerary, it’s an excellent stop during your Utah road trip.

Capitol Reef National Park highlights

1. Upon arriving at Capitol Reef National Park, don’t miss the chance to explore the Waterpocket Fold, a massive geological feature extending for nearly 100 miles. Scenic drives, such as the Capitol Reef Scenic Drive and Burr Trail, provide an excellent way to experience the park’s diverse landscapes, including its striking rock formations and desert vistas. The main scenic drive will lead you to dirt spur roads that access either Capitol Gorge or Grand Wash. Don’t be intimidated by the dirt road as they are suitable for passenger cars and lead to some of the best hikes in the park! 

2. Capitol Reef National Park boasts numerous hiking trails that cater to all skill levels. Some of the best hikes include Hickman Bridge, a short hike leading to a stunning natural bridge, and Cohab Canyon, which offers incredible views of the park’s unique rock formations. Consult with park rangers at the visitor center for the latest trail conditions and recommendations based on your interests and abilities.

3. While exploring Capitol Reef National Park, be sure to visit the historic orchards and the Gifford House, a charming homestead-turned-museum. Here, you’ll learn about the park’s early settlers and enjoy freshly baked pies and other delicious treats made from fruit grown in the park’s orchards.

4. Capitol Reef National Park is also home to ancient petroglyphs and cultural history dating back thousands of years. Be sure to stop at the petroglyph panels along the park’s main road to get a glimpse into the lives of the area’s early inhabitants.

The drive from Capitol Reef National Park to Arches National Park takes around 2 hours and covers approximately 130 miles. You can break up the long drive by stopping at Goblin Valley State Park, a unique landscape filled with thousands of peculiar, mushroom-shaped rock formations called hoodoos. This fascinating park offers several short hikes and excellent photo opportunities. The busiest times of day for the park are from 10 AM to 4 PM and you can expect a delay of 1 – 2 hours due to cars backed up from the entrance gate, especially on weekends or holidays. 

Arches National Park highlights

1. Arches National Park is world-famous for its more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the iconic Delicate Arch. Be sure to take the time to hike to Delicate Arch or view it from the lower or upper viewpoints, along with other popular rock formations such as Landscape Arch and Double Arch.

2. Arches National Park offers a variety of hiking trails for all skill levels. Among the best hikes are Park Avenue, a relatively easy hike that takes you through a stunning canyon lined with towering sandstone walls, and Devil’s Garden, a more challenging trail featuring several impressive arches.

3. The park also offers several scenic drives and viewpoints, allowing visitors to take in the breathtaking landscapes from the comfort of their cars. This park offers short hikes, mountain biking trails, and a breathtaking overlook that rivals the more famous Grand Canyon vistas.

Time your visit for sunrise, and you’ll be rewarded with a stunning spectacle as the sun illuminates the underside of the arch.

Another must-visit spot in the Island in the Sky District is Grand View Point. This overlook offers sweeping views of the canyon country below, and a short, easy hike along the rim allows for multiple perspectives of the unique landscape. Several other short hikes, such as the Upheaval Dome and White Rim Overlook, offer additional opportunities to explore the beauty of this district. Those with less time could catch the highlights of Canyonlands by simply enjoying the scenic drive in this district and making shorter pit stops at overlooks. 

2. The Needles District

The Needles District, located about 1.5 hours from the Island in the Sky, is known for its distinctive sandstone spires, natural bridges, and a more rugged landscape. If you have an extra day you could spend hours here just on the scenic drives in this district that offer striking views, with the Elephant Hill Road and the Colorado River Overlook being two popular choices. b. Longer hikes and backpacking opportunities

For those seeking more challenging hikes, the Needles District offers a variety of options. Trails like the Chesler Park Loop, Druid Arch, and the Joint Trail showcase the district’s unique rock formations, slot canyons, and panoramic vistas. Backpacking opportunities also abound in this district, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the wilderness.

3. The Maze District

a. Remote wilderness and multi-day adventures

The Maze District, the most remote and least visited of the three districts, is a haven for adventurers seeking solitude and rugged wilderness. Accessible only via dirt roads and requiring high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles, the Maze offers a true backcountry experience.

b. Extra time and special permits required

Visiting the Maze District requires extra time, careful planning, and often special permits. Multi-day hikes and off-road expeditions are popular in this district, but be prepared for self-sufficiency, as there are no amenities or services available. Remember when considering this adventure, your typical rental car will not be of use to you here. If planning a visit consider renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle in the Moab area.

Canyonlands National Park to Monument Valley

Drive time and scenic route options

Leaving Canyonlands National Park, your next destination is the iconic Monument Valley, approximately a 2.5-hour drive away. The long drive is worth it as it takes you through the vast and varied landscapes of southeastern Utah, offering opportunities for photo stops and detours to explore other natural wonders.

Monument Valley highlights

1. Monument Valley, located on the border of Utah and Arizona, is an unforgettable sight, with its towering sandstone buttes and iconic red-rock formations. If you’re planning a trip to Hot Springs National Park, it’s definitely worth considering a visit to Little Rock as well. It’s the capital city of Arkansas and has plenty of attractions to offer visitors, including a vibrant downtown area with excellent restaurants and shops, as well as several historic sites such as the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, which played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement.

To get to Little Rock from Hot Springs, you can either rent a car or take a shuttle or taxi service. If you’re driving, take US-70 East towards Little Rock and you’ll arrive in about an hour. Alternatively, there are several shuttle services that operate between the two cities, such as the Hot Springs Village Shuttle Service and the Hot Springs Shuttle Service. These can be a convenient and affordable option if you don’t want to rent a car or don’t feel comfortable driving.

How Long To Stay

I worked here for an entire summer so I experienced the nooks and crannies of the parks that most travelers won’t have time for.  So I’ve narrowed down my favorites to fit the needs of a shorter trip. 

Two days should be plenty of time to see the best of Sequoia National Park and I think one solid day at Kings Canyon would be sufficient, especially if you visit during a time of year when Kings Canyon Scenic Byway isn’t open. But everyone has their own schedule so I’ve included what to do for an extra day if you have the time. Each day’s itinerary provides you with the best opportunity to experience the best these parks have to offer.

Day One Sequoia National Park Itinerary

If driving into the park from Visalia on Hwy 198, you want to stop to enjoy the foothills with a stop at Hospital Rock across from the Hospital Rock picnic area. Here you’ll get a sense of what Native American life might have been like. You’ll see pictographs and bedrock mortars created by the indigenous groups that lived here as far back as 1350 AD. 

If you choose to hike in this area be vigilant and look out for rattlesnakes and poison oak. At the time of writing Hospital Rock to Potwisha Trail was closed due to impacts from the 2021 KNP Complex Fire. Always check the website for the latest updates on closures. 

Stop at Amphitheater Point for your first views of Moro Rock which gives you a greater sense of the elevation change as you drive into the park. 

Drive up to the Giant Forest area to enjoy Crescent Meadow and adjoining trails. You want Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road. On weekends the road closes to private vehicles. If you are traveling during the summer there is a free shuttle that runs from the Giant Forest Museum to the Moro Rock parking lot. On weekdays the road remains open, but the parking lot is small so it fills early. It also makes for a beautiful walk. At the end of Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road (also closed in the winter due to snow), you will come to the Crescent Meadow parking lot where you can walk to the trailhead. This 1.5-mile loop is one of my favorites in the park. The family-friendly flat trail leads to a group of shorter trails that connect to various sites, including Log Meadow, Trail of the Sequoias, and Tharp’s Log a fallen redwood tree that Tharp turned into his own personal house.

From the same parking lot, you have access to the viewing area atop Moro Rock which should not be missed.  The 350 steps of stone stairs lead you to the top. And as you climb, the views (and drop-offs) dominate your focus. If you have small children be sure to keep them close by. There is a slight concern as hand railings are available but bars are widely spaced and open. 

The Giant Forest Museum, where you can catch the free Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow shuttle during the summer, is open year-round. But it can be closed in winter due to impacts from snow storms. Normal hours of operation are 10 AM – 4 PM.  There are a variety of exhibits here and it makes for an educational experience.  

If you are staying in the park at Wuksachi Lodge you may be able to check in now. If not, you can still have lunch at Wuksachi Pizza Deck. Lunch is available from 12 PM to 2 PM. Dinner runs from 5 – 8 PM. Their menu is available here. There is at the time of writing no tableside service but you can enjoy your to-go meal at the available indoor and outdoor seating before you drive back toward Sherman Tree to tackle Congress Trail. This almost three-mile paved loop won’t work off all your calories but it is a great trail that allows you to see General Sherman tree the world’s largest tree at 275 ft tall and 36 ft wide. For accessible parking, there is a small parking area just two miles north of the Giant Forest Museum.   

Wrap up your day by taking the Sunset Rock trail, across from the Giant Forest Museum, for amazing sunset views. You can contribute to the Sequoia Park Conservancy and its recovery efforts stemming from the KNP Complex Fire by buying a group tour ticket for the Sequoia Sunset Walk. At $15 per person, this two-hour experience is a small group tour with an expert naturalist who hikes with you and teaches the group about the people that called this place home, as well as plants and animals in the area today. 

This is an easy trail with plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the outdoor space even if you don’t make it all the way to Sunset Rock. You may want to enjoy dinner at Peaks Restaurant. Check in with the staff for dinner specials.

Day Two Sequoia National Park Itinerary

On Day Two of your itinerary, if you’re an early riser and you want to beat the crowds, take Beetle Rock Trail and Big Trees Trail a 1.3-mile paved flat loop that can be accessed just a short walk from the Giant Forest Museum parking lot. Exercise caution here as well because there are no paths or stairs onto the rock. Bears are active in the area so if you picnic here later in the day be sure to keep food items in the storage boxes in the parking lot. 

This is also an interesting place to come to at sunset. You can, unfortunately, see a bit of the pollution that gets blown up the valley and learn more about its impacts on the area. 

Crystal Cave is on the agenda today so be sure to purchase tickets in advance of your trip. You’ll plan for about half a day to experience this including drive time, walking to the entrance, and then the 50-minute guided tour. 

The KNP Complex Fire had an unfortunate impact on the Crystal Cave area and at the time of writing the area is scheduled to be closed until May 2023. Assuming you get to have this experience you will enjoy the ranger-led tour to see caverns full of stalagmites and learn about the animals that call this otherworldly space home. 

While in the cavern you’ll also have an opportunity to experience total darkness and a moment of deep silence as your guide will turn off all lights and request that everyone remains silent for a moment. It’s a unique experience as the depth of the silence in total darkness is surprising and is a unique part of the adventure that you won’t forget. 

Wrap up this second day with a beautiful drive back to Lodgepole for a hike to Tokopah Falls. Before you start the hike you can grab lunch at the Lodgepole Cafe. This grab-and-go service has hot sandwich options such as grilled chicken, and cod, as well as hot dogs and salads. These along with other items can be a great way to build a picnic if you want to enjoy a meal on the trail. 

The approximately 4-mile round trip trail to Tokopah Falls starts near the Lodgepole Visitor Center and General Store. Drive a short distance up Lodgepole Road to parking at the Lodgepole Campground. Cross the bridge over the river and start on the Tokopah Falls trail. You’ll pass several meadows, and cross two bridges before you catch your first glimpse of the waterfall. I’d plan about 2 hours for this experience which has a 630 ft gain in elevation that happens gradually as it leads you along the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River. There are a series of switchbacks as you come to the last section of the trail and start walking along the rocks. The trail ends right at the base of the waterfall. 

Once you’ve returned, you can celebrate with dinner back at the Wuksachi Lodge.

Kings Canyon Day One Itinerary

Day one at Kings Canyon if you drive from the Wuksachi Village area or at the Montecito Sequoia Lodge, you’ll take the Generals Highway toward the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. This road is closed during the winter but usually opens toward the end of April. It is an enjoyable 2 to 3-hour round-trip drive. 

If you didn’t get a chance to see Crystal Caves you can also enjoy Boyden Cave on this route. this small marble Cavern again needs to be booked in advance because it’s so popular. 

Drive all the way to Roads End, the literal end of Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, and you’ll come to Zumwalt Meadow. The trailhead for Zumwalt Meadow Trail begins near the Kings River. It was once a loop trail but natural flooding in 2019 washed away a section. Now you can cross Kings River over a bridge. Just past the meadow, the trail will merge with the Kanawyer Loop trail for .8 miles toward Road’s End and Muir Rock. 

Be prepared for gnats if you are taking this trail later in the day. A simple bug net on your hat may help you avoid the annoyance of all that extra protein flying straight into your mouth. You can also bring bug repellant.  

Take a chance at seeing the Roaring River Falls by starting at the parking area 3 miles east of Village Road. The trail is paved and relatively easy. 

Mist Falls is a great day hike option as well. This trailhead starts just past the Road’s End Permit Station and connects to Paradise Valley so you may share it with backpackers who are doing an overnight hike. For day hikers it is a noteworthy approximately 8-mile round-trip. Or 11 miles round trip if you want to include the Kanawyer Loop trail. The route gains 800 feet in elevation, mostly toward the last section of the hike where it is more steep and rocky. There are of course great views of Mist Falls but you can also continue past that area for more dramatic views of the canyon below. 

You can travel back to enjoy Cedar Grove Visitor Center and have lunch at Cedar Grove Grill

To wrap up your day in Kings Canyon, you’ll have a chance to visit Grants Grove Village. Be sure to check out the Kings Canyon Visitor Center for updates on the latest trail closures in the area.  Just 1 mile from the Visitor Center, you’ll park at the General Grant Tree Parking area and catch a paved loop trail to the General Grant tree. This is America’s Christmas Tree as named by President Coolidge in 1926. Park staff still host special guided walks to the tree during the winter. 

From this same parking lot, you can also enjoy the 1.5-mile North Grove Loop for beautiful meadows, giant trees, and creeks.  You might also want to catch the Big Stump Basin area on your way out of the park. There is a 2-mile loop trail that meanders along more glorious meadows and past large sequoia stumps that were logged in the late 19th century. 

Kings Canyon Day Two Itinerary

If you have a second day to spend in Kings Canyon you might want to consider enjoying a relaxing day at Hume Lake where you’ll have sandy shores where you can relax after all that hiking. This beautiful lake used to be a millpond for local logging companies. But now it is a beautiful location that can be enjoyed by everyone in your group. You can fish, rent row boats or kayaks, or just swim and relax on the beach. This is also one of the few dog-friendly spots in the two national parks. And there is a gas station in case you need to fill up.

If you’re not done with hiking yet, there are numerous trails that are good for short hikes or longer day hikes. You can even bring your bike and bike along some of the longer trails.

Where to Stay

If you plan to explore both Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks then a stay at the Montecito Sequoia Lodge makes the most sense as it is centrally located. If you stay in Montecito Sequoia Lodge it will be an all-inclusive stay and includes cafeteria-style meals. There are no TVs or phones in the rooms or cabins but they do offer guests free wi-fi. 

If you are entering the parks when Kings Canyon Scenic Byway is closed or if you’re just visiting Sequoia National Park then consider a stay at Wuksachi Lodge to keep you close to trails and locations you want to explore.

Where Is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park?

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the biggest island of the Hawaiian chain, is 30 to 45 minutes from Hilo and 2.5 – 3 hours away from Kona. So if you want to maximize your time at the park you may want to consider at least one night in Hilo. This park, established in 1916, became the 13th national park in the United States. But was considered sacred to the indigenous Hawaiian people long before that, and can easily take up two days of your time.   

You may also want to consider a stay at the Volcano House, the only lodging inside the park grounds. You can arrange for standard guest rooms that sleep 1 – 4 guests or the site also handles campgrounds and cabins. Please plan ahead by at least a couple of months when booking.

Tips to Enjoy Your Stay

Whether you are taking a scenic drive along Crater Rim Drive, hiking across a Halema’uma’u Crater, or just walking the quick Sulpher Banks loop trail here are some tips that will help make your time here more enjoyable.

1. • Stay on marked routes and pay attention to warning signs

• • Consider a stay on the Hilo side to get the most out of your time in the park

• • Wear protective hiking gear, such as sturdy shoes and long pants – lava rocks can be jagged

• • Stay until after dark to see the glow from the lava – just be sure to stay in open marked areas

• • Be aware of updates – this is an active volcano and wildlife area, and closures happen frequently

• • Get an early start – parking lots fill quickly

• • Pack food and drinks, bring plenty of water, as there are very limited resources once you are in the park 
  • This is a cashless park and will no longer accept cash for entrance fees as of May 26th, 2023. Be sure to bring another form of payment such as debit or credit card. 

What to Do

Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on earth and her three other partners, Kilauea, Hualalai, and Mauna Kea pave the island with lava and provide fantastic insights into how our world works. The national park is a lesson in contrast with lush rainforest, green landscapes and barren wastelands. You can stand in awe of golden orange and red lava flows as Hawaii’s biggest island continues to grow into the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic activity is definitely a possibility as you are visiting some of the most active volcanoes, but there is so much more to a visit to this wonderful national treasure than volcanic eruptions.

The Kilauea Visitor Center, just past the park entrance, is a great first stop as you enter the park. This is one of the best places for visitors to get up-to-date information on volcanic activity from park rangers as well as current closures. It’s open most days from 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM. Visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: Top 7 Things to Do

With one full day, you could see all the sites around the Kilauea Caldera and a bit of the Chain of Craters Road. Amazing day hikes include Crater Rim Trail and Keanakako’i Crater. Hike across a lava field to the largest petroglyph field, the Pu’uloa Petroglyphs. Or explore the Ha’akulamanu sulfur banks where volcanic gases have colored the surface with crystals.

You can walk through the misty rainforest to the Thurston Lava Tube before heading down to the floor of the Kīlauea caldera dotted with cinder cones and steam vents or extend your trip with a longer hike to Byron Ledge in combination with the Kilauea Iki trail.

With two days you could also include the trip to Mauna Loa for star gazing. Or take an easy hike to the Waldron Ledge portion of the Crater Rim Trail to see the dramatic volcanic crater that collapsed in 2018. If you are up for an adventure check to see if you can get a permit to hike the strenuous 19-mile trek to the summit. But as always, check the national park service site first for closures. 

For those who are wondering about a trip to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and the Jaggar Museum please be aware that since the 2018 eruption of the Kilauea volcano, the area where these buildings are located has been significantly damaged. In December 2022 the park released plans for a relocation project.

In the Summit District

Watch the Sunrise/Sunset – let’s tackle the most popular thing to do first. One way to experience the beauty of Hawaii is by driving up Haleakala National Park’s famous mountain. If you’re an early morning person, know that there will be plenty of others with whom you can share your sunrise moment – but don’t wait too long because reservations made 60 days in advance are required to enter the park between 3 – 7 AM. You can read a more detailed checklist of what to do in order to see the sunrise in our article here. The sunset is also incredible from the summit and not nearly as crowded. Whichever event you choose to witness, plan to show up with plenty of time to spare as lines can get long at the entrance. The entrance gate is often only staffed by a single person and the line of cars can get backed up.

Hike into the Crater – from the Visitor Center parking lot you can enter the Sliding Sands trail, just 4 miles one way to get to the crater floor. You can also join Halemau’u Trail to make it an 11-mile loop if you’re more adventurous. If these distances don’t sound like your thing, no worries. 

Visit the Summit’s Highest Point – catch an amazing view of Maui or star gaze from its highest point by visiting Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). At 10,023 feet it can be a bit hard to breathe so it’s good for us all that there is an easy 0.3-mile trail. Take it slow and enjoy the views of west Maui, the Haleakala crater, and the observatory. 

Go stargazing – don’t just think of this national park as a daytime destination. It is worth it to come to the summit at night. You will enjoy a multitude of stars and if the skies are clear, the Milky Way as you’ve never seen it before. Bring a blanket and warm clothes then lay down on a bench to contemplate your place in the universe. 

HIke Pa Ka’oao – from the Haleakala Visitor Center there’s an easy trail just 0.4 miles round trip with 100 feet of elevation gain for a view of the crater if you are not interested in the longer hikes listed above.

Enjoy the overlooks – The Kalahaku Overlook on Haleakala Hwy is great for a pit stop with views of the crater. Also, consider the Leleiwi Overlook at mile marker 17.5 you’ll see a parking lot on the right side of the road. Take the short trail to the overlook for an amazing view. Sometimes clouds and mist can fill the crater but don’t despair. This could be an opportunity for you if the sun is behind you and casting your shadow on the mist. You may be able to detect a rainbow outline around your shadow, a truly magical experience! 

Take the nature trail at Hosmer Grove – To catch greener views, you can hike the shorter nature trail at Hosmer Grove. This spot also holds the only drive-in campground in the summit area. This is an easy half-mile trail with very little (50 ft.) elevation gain. Here you can see the non-native grove and learn about what park rangers are doing to keep these non-native species contained.

In the Kipahulu District 

Hike the Pipiwai Trail – one of the most famous trails in all of Maui you have to drive on the Road to Hana to get to this section of the park. 

Visit the Ohe’o Gulch – also known as the Seven Sacred Pools this area is one of the most beautiful collections of waterfalls and pools in Maui. But be advised there are not seven of them and they aren’t sacred. That was just a marketing ploy started by a local hotel owner to attract more tourists. 

How Much Time Do You Need at Haleakala National Park?

With one day you can choose one district and stay there to hike and thoroughly enjoy the area. With two days, you can see both districts of the park and I would recommend a hotel stay in Hana to give you some rest as well as an early start to the Kipahulu District. 

If you only have a half day to dedicate to the park then I would choose the Summit District and get in either a sunrise or sunset view from the summit. Depending on when you want to watch the celestial event you can hike an easier trail and enjoy the overlooks before or after to get a grander sense of the area.

Tips: 

1. 1. Pack your own food as there is very little in the summit area. When we went to watch the sunset we picked up dinner on the way up and enjoyed it from the parking lot right after sunset while we waited for darker skies to reveal the Milky Way.

1. 1. Dress in layers. It is darn cold up there at the summit. Think the 30s to 40s and windy. So pack hand/foot warmers, a beanie, and a warm jacket for your trip if you plan to come. A blanket would help as well. You can pick up a cheap lawn chair at a local store and donate it before you leave. 

1. 1. Bring a headlamp (with dark sky lighting if doing the sunset event). It will be dark up there and using your phone’s flashlight will drain the battery. You may be focused on using your phone for pictures and want your hands free. 

1. 1. Arrive early. Plan to give yourself at least an additional hour for waiting in line to get through the summit entrance gate. Especially if attending the sunrise event. And in the Kipahulu District, the trails and spots mentioned above are incredibly popular. Arriving early will save you from the crowds.

1. 1.  Decide if you want to go to the summit in the morning or afternoon.  if you’re ready for a very early start one of the most famous things to do is to watch the sunrise from the top of the summit. to schedule this you need to make reservations in advance through recreation.gov.  you can get a sunrise checklist sent right to your inbox just click here.  Sunset is also possible and many would say just as beautiful. Whichever you choose leave plenty of time for entry as there can be a line of cars at the entrance and often only one person staffing the entrance booth.  Be sure to get our Sunrise checklist in order to get the best tips and tricks for making your reservation.

1. 1.  Plan for stargazing.  whether you choose to go for a sunrise or sunset be sure to be there when the stars are still out. There is an amazing stargazing opportunity at The Summit. You will want a flashlight or headlamp, as dark areas are not well-lit. Be courteous and be sure you’re using a red or green light so as not to disturb the star-gazing of others. You’ll be able to appreciate the Milky Way and contemplate your space in the universe.

1. 1. Dress in layers. if you will be there in the dark be prepared for wind and chilly temperatures at The Summit. Think the 30s and 40s F, not the 70s you can expect at the beach. Pack a jacket, a beanie, hand warmers, and a blanket.  

1. 1. Take advantage of the overlooks. Leleiwi Lookout gives one of the best views of the volcanic crater around mile marker 17 on Haleakala Hwy. Sometimes the crater collects clouds and mist but don’t be disappointed because if the sun is behind you it can cast your shadow onto the mist and you might be able to see your shadow surrounded by a rainbow. Another great spot is the Kalahaku Overlook. You can appreciate the lush greenery of Maui but also grab another look at the crater. 

1. 1. Stay and hike. This National Park isn’t just about Celestial wonders. You can enjoy hiking and each district of the park with hikes for all skill levels from the summit to the Visitor Center parking lot you can take an easy hike on Pa Ka’ oao just 0.4 miles with only 100 ft of elevation gain to view the crater. Or take the Sliding Sands Trail, a more robust 4-mile one-way hike to the crater floor. Up for more of a challenge you can combine that with the Halemau’o trail for a more strenuous hike of 11 miles. For a landscape a bit greener than the Mars-like terrain of the summit, you take the Hosmer Grove nature trail at mile marker 10.5 on the Haleakala Hwy. This short hike, just a half-mile long, is a showcase of the Hawaiian struggle between native and non-native plants on the island. In 1910 Ralph Hosmer planted these trees here and the Park Service works hard to keep them from spreading into native species nearby. This is also a spot for bird watching. In the Kipahulu District hike the famous Pipiwai trail, about 2 miles each way and approximately 650 feet elevation gain. You can enter the trailhead at mile marker 42. Hike to Ohe’o Gulch to see one of the most beautiful spots highlighting multiple waterfalls and pools. Consider spending the night in Hana so you can get up early and enjoy these popular spots without the crowds. If you’ve already purchased a park pass when visiting the summit be sure to save your receipt and show it again at the entrance to this section of the park.

The best way to get from San Francisco to Yosemite is by car. The drive takes about four hours, depending on traffic, and passes through some of California’s most beautiful scenery. Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular road trip destinations in the United States. Located in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, the park is renowned for its dramatic landscape. You will see towering cliffs, pristine waterfalls, and giant sequoia trees. Although there are many ways to get to Yosemite, the best road trip from San Francisco is definitely the most scenic. The journey takes you through some of California’s most beautiful countryside. The distance from San Francisco to Yosemite is just under 200 miles. So whether you’re looking for an adventure-filled Yosemite road trip or a leisurely drive through stunning scenery, the journey to Yosemite from San Francisco is sure to please.

How Far is Yosemite from San Francisco?

You’ve enjoyed all the Bay Area sites such as downtown San Francisco’s Union Square and the Golden Gate Bridge. Now it’s time to see more of California! Why not enjoy one of the most beautiful national parks in North America?

Yosemite National Park is one of the nine national parks in California. From San Francisco, your travel time is just under 4 hours. The 167 miles start by taking 580 East to the 205. Keep going east to take the most direct route on Hwy 120. If you want to get to the national park in the quickest amount of time, this is the best route. You will enter the park through the Big Oak Flat entrance.

Yosemite is EV-friendly as well. You will find electric vehicle charging stations in the gateway towns as well as in the park itself at the Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite Valley Lodge, and the Yosemite Village Store. 

The Most Scenic Route From San Francisco to Yosemite

While some may want the fastest way, you may want to enjoy all the beautiful scenery that California has to offer.

The beautiful vistas don’t have to wait until El Capitan, giant Sequoia groves, Half Dome, or Yosemite’s famous Bridalveil Fall tunnel view. Take the more scenic route on this road trip by turning onto 99 South from 205. This route takes you through Modesto to Merced to Hwy 140. Here you’ll be able to travel through Mariposa to Yosemite National Park.

Taking the time to research which route provides you with the most site-seeing opportunities is worth the effort. You can stop to explore an old mining town or parallel the Merced River while enjoying beautiful views. Traveling from Hwy 140 you’ll enter the park through the Arch Rock entrance.

San Francisco to Yosemite Bus

If you are looking for public transportation travel options check out the Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System, or YARTS. This bus service will pick up passengers from locations on Hwy 120, Hwy 140, Hwy 395, and 41 to take you up to Yosemite. Check the website linked above to get the updated bus trip routes and rates.

This may not be the fastest route. But if you are traveling solo it allows you to step out of the driver’s seat. You can feast your eyes on a scenic route that will be a beautiful part of your Yosemite trip. The additional cost may be worth it if it means you can enjoy the best views. Check current road conditions before choosing your route as only the Merced-based route is labeled as open year-round and still there are winter limitations.

The YARTS bus service routes are as follows:

• Merced – Hwy 140 with connections from the Merced regional airport and stops at Mariposa and El Portal
• Fresno – Hwy 41 with connections from Fresno Yosemite International Airport and stops at Tenaya Lodge, Fish Camp, and Wawona
• Mammoth Lakes – Hwy 120/395 with connections from Mammoth Lakes Airport and stops at Tuolumne Meadows
• Sonora – Hwy 120 with stops in Jamestown and Buck Meadows

Things to Do

This road trip isn’t just all about how to get to the destination. We encourage you to extend your itinerary, stop frequently, and explore all that California has to offer. If you’re looking for a great place to have a fantastic lunch, stretch your legs in the central California city of Modesto. Enjoy a great meal at any one of the highly-rated restaurants. Or stay the night to catch a show at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Ticket prices vary depending on the event so be sure to check out the website ahead of time.

Whichever route you take to Yosemite there’s no end to the numerous opportunities to indulge in California’s history, outdoor activities, and wonderful views.

• Heading up Hwy 120 stop at the Cowboy Museum in Oakdale then grab lunch at the Lucky Buck Cafe in Groveland just an hour away
• Take a hike in the Emigrant Wilderness
• Relive the Gold Rush just a few miles from Sonora off Hwy 49 at Columbia State Historic Park
• Treat yourself to an adult beverage at the Indigeny Reserve
• Enjoy Pinecrest Lake
• Get a taste of history at Jamestown Railtown 1897 State Historic Park
• Traveling up Hwy 140 educate yourself at the Mariposa Museum

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Road Trip

Keep in mind that planning for emergencies might seem a morbid thing to do, but it’s a good idea. These tips help you feel prepared for any challenges that could come your way while driving. With your own vehicle or a rental car, do the following to give your trip the highest chance of success:

• Check your car’s tires, fluids and always start out with a full tank or charge
• Pack a first aid kit, battery cables, flares, blankets, simple snacks, and water
• Make reservations at your destination for dining and lodging
• Download your Google Maps route or GPS directions to your phone in case there is a loss of signal

Lodging options are plentiful in and around Yosemite. To get the most out of your experience consider staying in the park at one of these locations:

• The Ahwahnee Hotel – $500 – $600 a night to start for a room for 2
• The Yosemite Valley Lodge – $300 a night to start for a family room and views of Yosemite Falls from your hotel
• Wawona – $231 a night to start for a room with a bath
• White Wolf Lodge or Curry Village – $150 to $200 a night for heated canvas tent cabins

A perfect time to visit Zion National Park is during the fall months. you can avoid peak season and crowds that come with the summer months. This time of year you can replace those summer crowds with fall colors. Late September marks the start of fall foliage season and runs until early November.

While Zion National Park is open year-round, October is truly the best time to visit. You can avoid the typical closures (for example, Kolob Terrace Road can be closed due to snow and ice) which are likely to happen in the colder weather of the winter months as well as the snowfall that can hit suddenly in late fall or early March. So once the last of summer road trippers have driven off at the end of Memorial Day weekend, enjoy the great season of fall at Zion National Park with an October trip.

Note: Speaking of avoiding cold weather, the coldest month in Zion National Park is January when the average daily high does not get above 37F. In my book that makes it one of the best months to avoid!

Weather

The average temperature in the early fall months of September and October is comfortably warm. The average high is 78F and low temperatures don’t tend to go below 48F. The monsoon season typically runs from July to September and can create quick-rising water levels and flash floods. So it’s smart to skip that and instead relish the comparably dry month of October with warmer temperatures and sunny days. With fewer days of rain, moderate daytime temperatures lead to pleasant weather for hiking. Far from the high temperatures and long days of summer, fall’s cooler temperatures at night are still comfortable enough for stargazing. Taking advantage of a park after dark increases your chance of a good time!

Things to Do

Zion is one of America’s favorite national parks for a reason. While the best hikes will be totally unique to you, there is truly something for everyone here at this southern Utah gem. Hiking trails that highlight strenuous hikes such as Angels Landing and Observation Point allow you to take in spectacular views from higher elevations all the way down to the canyon floor. Kolob Canyons Road will lead you on a hike along a 14-mile trail toward Kolob Arch. Plan for a full day for this one!

Famous hikes at lower elevations and with greater accessibility include the Riverside Walk Trail which has wonderful views of the Virgin River. Another popular hike with greater accessibility is the Pa’rus trail which also follows the river from the south campground.

The east entrance hosts uncrowded hiking trails such as the full-day hike on East Rim Trail. Or try the shorter Canyon Overlook Trail. The trail parking lot is just east of the Zion-Mount Carmel tunnel. Elevation gain is minimal after climbing the stair steps carved into the stone.

Leaving from this side of the park can also connect you to Hwy 89. This route can lead to Bryce Canyon National Park and then on to Capitol Reef National Park via Hwy 12 if you are planning on a Utah road trip. One of the best things about a Utah road trip is the scenic Hwy 12 drive! While it’s not the shortest route between two points, it is definitely one of the most beautiful.

Within Zion, you can indulge in a nice drive as well. Zion Canyon Visitor Center is beautiful with yellow cottonwoods in the fall. While there is plenty of space during this less crowded time in the park and small parking lots exist at many of the trailheads, shuttle buses are still running consistently and will take you along the entire Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. So leave your car at the Visitor Center lot. Ride all the way to the last stop, the Temple of Sinawava. From here enjoy a popular hike like the Zion Narrows. Ride back toward Zion Lodge, a great place for lunch or a picnic on the expansive lawns. Private vehicles are allowed when it is not peak season but the shuttle is convenient, frequent, and more environmentally friendly.

The entrance fees are typically per person or by vehicle. The entrance fee to Zion is $35 per vehicle but if you’re planning on visiting more than two national parks in a year, it is a good idea to purchase America the Beautiful Pass. The United States has a wealth of beauty in not only this popular national park, but including over 60 others, so this $80 pass is definitely worth it. What to Bring

To have the best experience at the park, pack correctly. Wear sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes, neoprene socks, a reusable water bottle, and plenty of water. Save yourself the extra cost of buying snacks by bringing plenty of your own.
