But you won’t climb this pyramid like visitors used to do at the ruins of Chichen Itza or Coba. This pyramid was already covered in vegetation when the Spanish arrived. In fact, it remained undiscovered by the Spanish for quite some time. But once they noticed the remains of ancient architecture they were compelled to tackle it the way they did so many other ancient indigenous structures. They built a church on top of it.
Today, atop the Great Pyramid stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, a colonial church that showcases the complicated blend of pre-Hispanic and European influences. San Pedro is where you will find the easiest access to the pyramid site. The most common choices include buses, taxis, or organized tours. As it is only seven miles away from the city so exploring Cholula from Puebla (we could see the church from our hotel room) is easy and the journey only takes 30 minutes or so depending on traffic. You can rest assured that you’ll be enjoying Cholula’s sites in no time at all no matter which option you take.
Buses are a popular and cost-effective mode of transportation. The local bus service operates between Puebla and San Pedro Cholula, making it an ideal choice for independent travelers. Local buses are reliable, frequent, and provide a mostly comfortable journey. Look for buses labeled “Cholula” that pick up at the Zolcalo or ask your hotel front desk for assistance in finding the nearest bus stop. The travel time between the two cities is approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending on stops and traffic conditions.
Taxis offer a more personalized and flexible option for reaching Cholula. You can easily find taxis in Puebla, and most drivers are familiar with the route to Cholula. Be sure to discuss the fare with the driver before starting your journey. The travel time is slightly less than by bus, and taxis provide the convenience of door-to-door service, allowing you to maximize your time in Cholula, getting dropped off right by the pyramid entrance and museum.
We were able to organize a private driver once we connected with one of our Uber drivers. She gave us her hourly rate and we were able to book her for our trip to Cholula. But if you don’t have the ability to communicate with your ride-share drivers at that level then you may want to consider other options.

The government developed a tourist-focused train from Puebla to Cholula. You may see this in the recommendations for how to get to Cholula as you do more trip research. We saw the station and final stop which was right at the foot of the pyramid. While the goal was to help tourists visit Cholula’s Great Pyramid, at the time of our visit, it was not up and running. It closed during Covid and had not yet reopened as of 2023.
For a hassle-free experience, organized tours are available from Puebla to Cholula. These tours often include transportation, a knowledgeable guide, and a well-planned itinerary. Joining a Cholula day tour allows you to sit back, relax, and focus on enjoying the sights without the worry of navigating transportation logistics. Check with local tour operators or travel agencies in Puebla for available options. For example, at the time of our visit, there was a 13-hour (all-day) tour option from our hotel $200 (pesos) for adults and $150 for children. That would not have been a bad option for someone considering a whole day for the visit.

There is an interesting yet intimate museum that you can walk through to get an introduction and it has a replica of the site that is very helpful as you imagine what it would have looked like years ago.

With a base four times larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, the pyramid’s sheer size is a remarkable feat of construction. I highly recommend getting the Google Translate app on your phone and using the camera feature to read the signage at the museum displays if you are not fluent in Spanish. They were very informative and gave you a much stronger sense of the transition of people that came through this area.

After you are done with the museum, check out the bathroom (sanitarios, in Spanish) if needed before you head up the hill. Just a short walk up the sidewalk and across the street you will be able to enter the site. Be sure to keep your tickets to show the entry guard.
As you approach the Great Pyramid, you’ll remember its layered structure and stepped platforms as seen in the model at the museum. Each layer represents a different era of construction and cultural influence, showcasing the complex history of Cholula.
