1. Plan for the Weather

Be Prepared for All Seasons: Edinburgh’s weather can be unpredictable, even in summer. It’s common to experience all four seasons in a day, so pack layers, including a waterproof jacket and good walking shoes. An umbrella can be handy, but the city’s winds might make it difficult to use. The locals are known to say, “There is no bad weather, just bad clothing.”

2. Walk, But Also Use Public Transport

Walking-Friendly City: Edinburgh is a very walkable city, especially in the central areas like the Old and New Towns. Many of the main attractions and quality dining options are within walking distance of each other.

Public Transport: For longer distances, take advantage of Edinburgh’s efficient bus and tram systems. Consider getting a day pass if you plan to use public transport frequently. We took advantage of the Hop On Hop Off buses during our stay. It was incredibly convenient and there are multiple pass options to choose from.

3. Take a Free Walking Tour

Get Oriented: A free walking tour is a great way to get your bearings and learn about the city’s history from a knowledgeable guide. Many companies offer tours that cover different aspects of the city, from historical sites to literary connections.

4. Visit During Off-Peak Times

Avoid Peak Tourist Season: If possible, visit Edinburgh during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) to avoid the busiest crowds. This can make for a more pleasant experience, especially when exploring popular attractions like Edinburgh Castle. We visited in early June and were already dealing with crowds.

5. Book Ahead for Popular Attractions

Reserve in Advance: Edinburgh is a popular tourist destination, so it’s wise to book tickets for major attractions like Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Royal Yacht Britannia in advance, especially during peak season. You will not necessarily be able to purchase tickets on the day of, so save yourself the disappointment and grab those ahead of time.

6. Respect Local Etiquette

Tipping: Tipping in Edinburgh is similar to the rest of the UK. A tip of 10-15% is customary in restaurants if service is not included. It’s also polite to round up the fare for taxi drivers.

Respect the Scots: Scots are generally very friendly and welcoming. Be mindful of the fact that Scotland has a distinct cultural identity, separate from the rest of the UK and it is likely that if you engage in conversation with a local they will have opinions about that fact. A little knowledge of Scottish history and culture goes a long way in making a good impression.

London is a city that you could spend months in and never see it all. Trust me, I’ve tried. I lived in this beautiful city for six months and still felt like I’d only begun to understand what was possible from there. The city is an amazing launching pad for the rest of Europe and the UK. And thanks to Eurostar, day trips from London to Paris by train are easier than ever.

London’s St. Pancras International Station can take you to Amsterdam, Brussels, Bruges, Lille, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Ghent. But we’re going to cover a train journey from London to the city of love and include all of the many things you can do on a Paris day trip. Let’s go!

Planning Your Day Trip

Planning a day trip to Paris starts with heading to the Eurostar website. Select your route and travel dates. If your dates are flexible, check out the date and time range of options above the schedule table. Once you confirm your outbound train you’ll be able to select your return.

The best way to take advantage of the adventure is to get an early start. The first train often leaves London St. Pancras International sometime around 6 AM. This allows for a full day of activities before a late evening return journey. London to the city of Paris is approximately 2.5 hours across the Channel tunnel. London to Disneyland Paris is no longer a direct train (as of 2023) and takes a bit longer, clocking in at 3 hours and 45 min of travel time. They are open to the idea of restarting direct service but as of the time of writing it takes a bit longer.

Eurostar Experience

Eurostar trains are so simple to use that after experiencing the stresses of flying, you may never go back to the airport! Eurostar allows for 2 pieces of luggage and one handbag with no weight limits. There is no charge for seat selection and no liquid limits (are you giggling with joy yet??).

The Eurostar leaves London from St. Pancras International Station, near Kings Cross. Traveling Standard class you can bring your food and drink on board, or buy snacks from the cafe on board. There is a 2 – 2 seat configuration which is perfect for a family of 4. The Standard Premier provides a light meal served at your seat and slightly more spacious seating. Business Premier allows for 3 pieces of luggage and 1 handbag, along with a hot meal and champagne brought to your seat. Both Standard Premier and Business Premier get their own train car as well as fast-track ticket gates and lounges in both London and Paris.

Eurostar tickets get very expensive the closer you get to your trip dates. So for the lowest available fare be sure to check as far in advance as possible. They post their train schedules 120 days out.

Arriving: Navigating Paris Gare du Nord

When traveling from London to Paris you cross a time zone boundary. To understand the time difference you should know that London operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or British Summer Time (BST) during daylight savings. Meanwhile, Paris is on Central European Time (CET) or Central European Summer Time (CEST). Paris is always 1 hour ahead of London.

The time on your departure ticket is London time and the arrival time will be according to Paris time. Since you lose an hour when arriving in Paris, it’s important to maximize your time by starting early.

Arrival at the Paris Gare du Nord station takes you less than 15 min by car to the city center. The railway station is a short walk to Sacre Coeur Basilica and Montmartre district. Both come with sweeping views of the city on a clear day.

Suggested Itinerary for a Day in Paris

To ensure one of the best day trips you’ll ever take, we have to keep track of time. You realistically will have only 7 – 8 hours to spend in the city. But I’ve done as few as 6 hours and that is still a good amount of time to at least get a taste of what the city can offer. In my experience, that means you should do activities that allow you to see the most in a fairly decent amount of time. The best places to see are very dependent on your travel style but I will say walking allows you to get to know a neighborhood while a dining river cruise allows you to see a lot of the major iconic sites while relaxing with a meal.

Depending on your travel preference you may be happiest with one of the many Paris tours, free time with the Mona Lisa at the Louvre museum, a stroll along Camps Elysees, and climbing to the top of Arc de Triomphe for views of the city, or a relaxed meal as you float by Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. These are the kinds of fun decisions you get to make while planning a day trip to Paris.

Where to Eat

There is no shortage of excellent dining in the French capital, but if you are in the Marais district do yourself a favor and stop for tea and a sweet treat at Le Loir dans La Theiere. The name means door mouse in a teapot and the restaurant is Alice in Wonderland themed. Trust me when I say this spot should not be missed if you are looking for a neighborhood slice of heaven. I mean, we had tea at the Ritz, and this was better.

In the Latin Quarter while you enjoy the heart of Paris be sure to stop by the Bistro des Augustins. This streetside cafe has some of the best food Paris has to offer. Their gratin is amazing, salads are gorgeous and all of it is affordable as you are sitting with tourists and locals alike. Grab a sidewalk table, order an adult beverage, and relax. Food is made to order so it will give you plenty of time to people watch as Paris strolls by.

And while on the theme of dining, one of the best things to do is to take a dining river cruise. This is a great way to see sites and dine at the same time! Lunch, brunch or dinner options are available so you have the ability to design the trip according to your schedule. And you can select tickets at a variety of price levels so you also have the ability to customize your level of service.

Raise your glass in a toast as you float by the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, Notre Dame, and our sister Statue of Liberty. I recommend scheduling for a window seat or placement at the front of the boat for best viewing while you enjoy French cuisine.

Shopping and Souvenirs

This is a day trip so shopping in Paris and taking a train back where there are no weight limits leaves your options wide open compared to flying! a great way to keep the experience going is to buy local food items to bring back to London with you. Chocolates or macaroons from the Marais district or a local French cheese that you loved make not only great ways to remember the trip but also good snacks for the train ride back to London.

Postcards, second-hand books, and art prints can be found at street-side stands in the Latin Quarter along the banks of the Seine. These 900 booksellers have seen tourists and writers alike (Ernest Hemmingway perused these stalls) for decades. These sellers have been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992.

We have also grabbed magnets, reusable tote bags, and clothing. These unique to you gifts fit your style of travel and those that you will give them to. Just be sure to leave time in your Paris day tour to grab a moment that makes you smile.

Making the Most of Your Time

One of the top tips, as well as the easiest way, to get as much time as possible out of your trip to Paris, is to leave London as early as possible. If you want to spend time in a museum maybe just pick one and allow yourself a couple of hours or book a VIP tour with early or last entry tickets purchased in advance. That will save you time, the guide will help increase efficiency, and you won’t lose a chunk of your day waiting in long lines.

Quick Paris sightseeing means a combination of walking and ride shares. Balance your desire to walk the streets of iconic neighborhoods with important landmarks. Grab a ride-share service to get to more sites. Don’t forget that your lunch or brunch time meal can be spent on the river Seine which allows for efficient Paris viewing of major sites, coupled with commentary, and a relaxed meal.

Returning to London

Your return journey from the city of light should be on the last Eurostar train back to London. Check the train schedule when you book your departure for the latest possible return time for your dates. Remember that you’ll gain an hour when you get back to the train station in London. But be sure to set aside time for travel to Gare du Nord and security checks.

Well ok, it’s not entirely his fault. I blame the driver.

We were flying home after spending almost 2 weeks in Lisbon and the Azores. Our long layover had graced us with about 7 hours of sleep at a hotel just outside of Charles De Gaulle. And with 12 more hours to wait before the final leg of our flight, we decided to enjoy Paris for a bit. Anthony Bourdain made long layovers look cool! Why couldn’t we?

But we didn’t account for commuter traffic into the city.

We didn’t account for a lot of things, actually.

Like our ride-share driver’s obvious intestinal issues that smacked of biological warfare. Or the fact that he was driving so aggressively (read:using off ramps as passing lanes) we all almost messed ourselves.

Rick Steves may monologue poetically about the beauty of circling Arc de Triomphe but he wasn’t with our driver. This guy defiantly shoved his car within an inch of a merging bus (probably a Rick Steves tour) using his sheer determination to intimidate other mere mortal Parisians. He would rather die and take us with him than give up the sliver of space he used to shoot across five lanes of oncoming cars all in an equal rush to get to their own destinations.

Now I’d like to be able to tell you that I was in tune with each of my children, gave them reassuring looks, said that we’d be ok, maybe even reminded them that each culture is different and we shouldn’t judge.

But I couldn’t look at them. I couldn’t fake the calm. I was too busy wondering if I’d see the inside of a French hospital.

When he dropped us off, three blocks from our desired destination by the way, we happily lept out of the car.

The experience left quite the impression on our oldest who decided that driving in Paris was insane. Maybe it was the fact that he was in the process of driver’s education himself. Or maybe that he had just begun to realize the power, and accountability of being in charge of tons of steel going at high speeds. But whatever it was, he determined that Paris did not need to be on his travel list ever again.

For all the crazy twists and turns I believe that this is part of travel. Not literally the crazy driver himself but that experience when a difference in expectation smacks you upside the head, assaults the senses or challenges your idea of normal.

If you ask my son if he wants to go back he’ll say you’re rediculous. But everything is rediculous when you don’t grow up with it that way.

Like me showing up at a McDonalds in Portugal (don’t judge) and discovering that not only could I buy a beer, but that said alcohol was cheaper than a soda. Whaaaaatttt??? Further scientific investigation taught me that Portugal is one of many countries that has a tiered sugar tax and the more sugar content something has the more it costs to buy.

If a new experience is not what we’re used to, it makes us take a step back. That’s the greatest opportunity – to throw what you think is the norm under a spotlight as you encounter people who do it a whole different way.

Sometimes you adopt something new (sugar tax = brilliance). Othertimes, well maybe you just passionately recommit yourself to driving in a manner that encourages a long life.

In the end travel helps you discover a bit about yourself, what you want to hold onto and what you want to give away. And that to me is worth a crazy driver.

Until next time fellow travelers,

Yeah, no joke that literally happened. Photographic proof needed – ok here you go.

Asleep on the sidewalk

We were in Italy for the first time and trying to do everything we possibly could. Drunk on the thrill of being in a place that our children had only seen in textbooks and suffering from an undetected case of what I like to call the “we’re so close!” syndrome. When you travel to Europe from the US you realize, “Oh my goodness I could go see another fantastic location in no time at all. I should totally go do that too!” Let’s go see. Let’s go do. And do. And do. And do. Well, we did… until we dropped.

And it’s soooooo tempting! I catch us thinking like this more frequently than I’d like to admit.

Heading to London? Paris is so close! How far? Well Sally it’s just train-ride-under-the-English-Channel away.

And what about the Lake District? So close!! A day trip to Bristol is completely doable. Everything is so close! So we should definitely do everything.

Riiiiiight?!?

Maybe this is a United States thing. California thing for sure – possibly shared with my equally abnormally large-sized state of Texas. Traveling for hours is nothing to us. You can travel 10 hours across the state of Texas and. You’re. Still. In. Texas. Cali folks suffer the same “size matters” kinda issue.

So traveling for hours to see a new thing is not alien to us. We’re not only willing to do it.

We expect it

We wear the miles like a badge

But numbers don’t equal satisfaction. Amounts covered. Places seen. None of that matters if you drive yourself into the ground to get it all done.

I learned that the hard way watching helplessly as jetlagged kicked in and my family crashed slowly but surely every step we took across Florence. I didn’t account for the impact of flying from the US into Rome, nor the impact of the relaxing hum of a high-speed train on zero nights of good sleep. We showed up in one of the most walkable cities on the planet and by lunch, we could barely take another step.

Museum benches became beds. Anywhere we paused for more than 60 seconds led to horizontal positioning. “Just let me rest my eyes for a sec, Babe.”

And the frosting on the cake? In my wisdom, I’d booked the last train out that night because I wanted to make sure we didn’t have to miss anything.

Oh. Dear. Lord.

Asleep in the station bookshop waiting for the last train

There were tickets purchased in advance and never used. Dinner reservations never shown up for. We were so jet lagged we couldn’t eat. Couldn’t climb another tower. The not-to-be-missed view was missed. The not-to-be-dissed steak was dissed.

I had to learn how to slow down. To enjoy more you need to cover less.

Will my husband and I go back to Florence? Yep. We want a redo (that looks like this).

I should have allowed us to take a day. Recover. Sleep in and just wander the neighborhood there in Rome. I could have scheduled the train trip to Florence for the next day.

Coulda shoulda woulda led me to my new way of planning travel.

There are days off now. There’s sleeping in time. No more than 1 – 2 big things a day. No more than two days of activity in a row without a break and some downtime. This is now what works for us.

A friend of mine once told me “The itinerary may be written on the page. But you’ll hang on to the memories you place in the margins.” I love that. Speaks to the power of the unscripted, the unplanned. And what we can experience if we just let ourselves be in a new place with our hearts and minds open.

I challenge you to take a look at your next itinerary with fresh eyes. Did you leave room? Is there space to just be? Because you might just be gifting yourself the best experience of all.

Until next time fellow travelers,

I’m at work at yet another meeting led by someone who just doesn’t get it yet somehow makes more money than me. And I’m drifting off, just can’t help it, to dreams of retirement. I’m hiking the Swiss-Italian Alps in September. I’m practically living at a hawker center in Singapore during February. Yep, it’s going to be hard to focus today. I’ve got plans in mind.

However, transitioning from the dream to reality necessitates thoughtful planning, especially when retiring on a fixed income. In other words, this daydream is sweet but it’s time to get real.

This guide aims to help future retirees navigate the financial aspects of travel preparation, ensuring that exploring the world remains dreamy and financially viable. Unlike that meeting you’re stuck in.

Assessing Financial Readiness for Travel

Before packing your bags, it’s crucial to evaluate your financial landscape. Here are key questions to consider:

What is my monthly income versus expenses? Ensure your regular expenses are well covered before allocating funds to travel.

How much of my income is discretionary? Determine the amount available for leisure, including travel.

Do I have an emergency fund? It’s essential to maintain a safety net for unexpected costs.

Can my retirement income sustain my travel aspirations? Consider the impact of your travel plans on your long-term financial health.

What are my travel priorities? Decide between one grand trip or multiple smaller excursions.

How will inflation affect my travel budget? Incorporate a 3% annual increase in costs to stay realistic.

Are there upcoming mandatory withdrawals from retirement accounts? Plan how to utilize these funds effectively.

Budgeting for Travel in Retirement

To budget wisely for travel, follow these three simple steps:

Determine Your Annual Travel Budget: Estimate how much you’d like to spend on travel each year, considering your retirement income and priorities.

Break it Down: For big trips, align them with significant withdrawal milestones. For smaller trips, spread the costs evenly throughout the year.

Contingency: Always have a buffer for unexpected travel expenses.

Medical Care and Travel Insurance

When traveling, especially abroad, retirees must consider the additional costs of medical care:

Emergency Medical Insurance: Covers urgent medical treatments abroad.

Comprehensive Travel Insurance: Includes medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and interruptions.

Medevac Insurance: For transportation in medical emergencies.

Pre-existing Condition Waivers: Essential for those with existing health issues.

Budgeting for Travel in Retirement

To budget as wisely as possible, follow a few vital steps. First, determine your annual travel budget. Estimate how much you want to spend on travel each year after taking into consideration your retirement income and priorities.

Break down that budget. And for bigger trips, like you’re finally taking that photograph safari in Tanzania, align them with significant withdrawal milestones. For smaller trips, you may want to consider spreading costs evenly over the year. And always include a buffer for unexpected travel expenses.

Medical Care and Travel Insurance

When traveling abroad retirees must consider the additional costs of medical care. There are different kinds of travel insurance to meet those needs. Emergency medical insurance covers the more urgent treatments that may happen abroad, like when that Vespa adventure through the narrow streets of Italy went all wrong. Comprehensive travel insurance includes medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and interruptions. There’s also Medevac Insurance that provides transportation in medical emergencies. You will need to take some time to research and determine which type of insurance is best for you.

Strategic Financial Planning for Travel

While I’m not a financial advisor and this is definitely not official financial advice, talk to your advisor about the best way to identify the source of your travel funds for the next 3-5 years. He or she might suggest that you:

Rebalance Retirement Accounts – consider shifting funds to more stable investments like CDs or bonds if necessary.

Inflation Consideration – acknowledge that costs, including airfare, will rise. Planning with a 3% annual inflation rate in mind ensures a more accurate budget.

While retirement offers the freedom to fulfill travel dreams, achieving this without compromising financial security requires meticulous planning. By evaluating income, prioritizing expenses, considering insurance needs, and strategically managing investments, future retirees can enjoy their travels fully prepared for the financial implications. Remember, daydreaming is fantastic travel and retirement inspiration but the key to a successful retirement travel lifestyle lies not only in dreaming but in the peace of mind knowing your finances are well-handled.

If you’ve got fur babies, no trip is completely guilt-free until you’ve made sure that every detail regarding your pet’s care has been covered. This requires careful planning and consideration for their individual personalities, comfort, and well-being. Here are some tips and ideas to help make the process smoother for both you and your pet.

1. Choose the Right Type of Care

Pet Sitting: Hiring a pet sitter to come to your home can be less stressful for pets since they remain in their familiar environment. But looking for someone experienced and with good references can be a challenge. Check with friends and family to see who they have used in the past or look online for highly rated services, such as rover.com.

Boarding: If pet sitting isn’t an option, find a reputable boarding facility. Ask your veterinarian or groomer for reputable boarding kennels nearby. Visit in advance to check for cleanliness, safety, and the overall environment. Some places offer “luxury” boarding with more space and individual attention.

Family or Friends: Sometimes, having a trusted friend or family member take care of your pet can be the best option. Bring them over in advance if your pets don’t see them often so they can have “get to know you” time. Or have them handle a daily pet task with you still home so your animal can see they are ok. This also ensures they are familiar with your pet and their routine.

2. Ensure Comfort and Safety

Leave detailed instructions about feeding, medications, and daily routines. This should include contact numbers for the local vet in case of emergencies.

Make sure your pet’s bedding, toys, and other comforts are easily accessible.

If boarding, bring a familiar item from home, like a blanket or toy, to help comfort your pet. Find out if they allow outside treats that your pet is familiar with so that can be a part of their routine that does not change.

3. Prepare for Medical Needs

Leave contact information for your vet and make sure the caregiver or facility knows about any medical conditions or medications. Call your vet in advance and let them know you have given this caregiver their contact info.

Consider setting up a pre-approval with your vet in case emergency treatments are needed while you’re away. If you are comfortable with it, give the veterinarian decision-making power if you are unreachable.

4. Maintain a Routine

Pets thrive on routine, so try to keep their feeding, walking, and playtimes as consistent as possible with their normal schedule.

5. Communication and Safety

Arrange for regular updates on your pet’s well-being. Some pet sitters and most boarding facilities can provide daily texts or emails with photos.

Ensure your pet’s microchip information is up to date and that they have a collar with ID tags.

If hiring a pet sitter or boarding, make sure you have a clear understanding of costs and everything arranged regarding payments in advance.

6. Comforting Departure

When it’s time to leave, try to keep your goodbye calm and cheerful to avoid causing any stress or anxiety for your pet.

If checking in with your pet during the trip is necessary, consider pet cameras. These tiny cameras allow you to interact with your pet remotely, which can be an ongoing comfort while you’re away for both you and your animals.

By planning ahead with just a few simple steps, you can enjoy your travels knowing your pets are in good hands and as comfortable as possible.

I don’t know about you but I’m feeling a bit worn lately and would benefit from a bit of downtime. I need some time to sit in a simple place with just one or two things, like sand and water. With just one or two sounds, like waves and wind. And let all the other noise that clogs my mind go silent. Maybe then I can remember what it is to be the me that I found over and over all those times ago. Yeah, that’s it. I’m not finding. I’m remembering. Solo travel will be vital to that.

And I believe it’s important that we take the time to prioritize solo travel for ourselves. I participated in a women’s business retreat last year down in Costa Rica. And when I arrived I had a glorious day all to myself before the conference started and spent it just decompressing. I sat under a palapa listening to waves crash on the beach. The house I stayed at was so close and the impact of the waves so hard that the ground shook. It was amazing to be in the presence of something so powerful and ongoing, timeless. That one couldn’t help but let all the little day-to-day stuff that had piled up on my shoulders fall away bit by bit like dead leaves to a breeze. The knot between my shoulder blades began to untangle. I was still. And that was glorious.

The Many Benefits

Freedom – By traveling solo there are no voices to answer to but your own. That freedom and flexibility are so enchanting when your daily norm is running around answering to as many people as there are hours in the day! Want to see the museum but not necessarily spend all day inside of it? No problem! Just take a walk right on by and leave the inside for another trip. Loathe to make a reservation because you just don’t want that kind of commitment? No problemo. See where fate takes you. For those of us who are committed to a life of family and friends with a fierce sense of loyalty and commitment, a chance to enter the world solo may be refreshing. The liberation of being physically in another place alone makes these obligations move to the back burner for a bit. And that break may be just what you need.

Money saver – Budgeting tends to be a bit easier as well. Keep on track by skipping where you want to splurge where you want puts that flexibility I mentioned above to good use! You also are only paying for one. One dinner, one ticket, one ferry ride. Maybe you taking the lead in where money is spent is a novelty and you rediscover financial priorities that got lost in compromising with others.

Recharge – If you have to keep the LED burning bright, you can recharge those waning batteries and do as little or as much as you’d like because there is no one else’s agenda to adhere to. This is a guilt-free, and much-needed, indulgence. Solo travel leaves a ton of space to think, reflect and process. Yes, there might be that moment of longing to share a special moment with someone else. But there are also a ton of moments to just reflect on your wants, needs, and gratitude for a change. We don’t often get to do that when in a group or with a partner. Maybe the routine of day in and day out is getting to you. A change is what you need to re-energize yourself.

Because if I didn’t I’d never go – Maybe if you didn’t travel solo you just wouldn’t go. And for some of us that’s not an option. Not all of us have friends we want or can take that adventure. As much as they’d love to come along, maybe they have other commitments right now and just can’t. And we’ve worked hard to save the money to go, so solo travel is the answer. Maybe we’ve watched someone struggle with a personal battle and lose. Or we’ve watched as a dream went unfulfilled. Whatever moment happened that pushed you to want to do this thing that you’ve never had the nerve to do before, it’s motivated you now to travel on your own.

A gift for me from me – creating special moments for yourself by yourself can be both liberating and empowering. There doesn’t need to be a justification or someone special that you are doing this for. You are the special person and you are taking this trip for yourself. Taking that time to travel solo brings out strength and ingenuity you did not know you had. You may meet amazing people whom you can call friends who connect you to special moments all around the world. Maybe you want to stare at a painting for 30 minutes without someone talking to you or tapping their foot because what you are doing does not fit their schedule. That liberation from another’s sense of schedule can be a nice break from reality.

How to Make it Easy

Using tech to support planning and communication is huge. Tech has come so far since my solo travel in Europe when I had to use a phone card to call home! Anyone remember those? Now not only do we have international phone plans, but we also have online tools that allow us to share our itinerary as well as live updates. For example, if you want to share your complete itinerary with someone back home, Wanderlog planning features and sharing lets you share your itinerary with loved ones so they know where you are.

Don’t forget to include a single supplement in your budget when necessary. Sometimes vendors apply a single supplement to accommodations. Ask if you are unsure to avoid surprise additions to your overall budget.

When packing for solo travel, it’s essential to prioritize versatility, convenience, and safety. Start with the basics: a sturdy, lightweight carry-on or backpack that’s easy to maneuver on your own. Pack versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched for various occasions and weather conditions. Don’t forget essentials like any necessary medications (plus a bit extra in case a flight gets canceled or switched unexpectedly), a portable phone charger, a universal adapter, and a small, secure bag for valuables are also must-haves. Additionally, if you are checking a bag consider packing a travel-sized flashlight, a multitool, and a photocopy of important documents like your passport and emergency contacts should be kept safely tucked away in your carry-on, and a copy back home with a trusted someone. Lastly, pack a journal or notebook to document your adventures and that recommended good book you’ve always been meaning to get to for entertainment during the downtime you are treating yourself with.

Taking specific steps to ensure safety during travel is a sure way to feel more confident about your solo trip. There are several strategies to mitigate risks and enhance peace of mind. Thorough research into potential destinations is a great way to build comfort, including understanding local customs, laws, and potential safety concerns. Staying connected with loved ones through regular check-ins or sharing itineraries can provide an added layer of security. Additionally, participating in selected small group activities and locally led tours not only offers enriching cultural experiences but also fosters companionship with fellow travelers and knowledgeable guides, reducing feelings of isolation and enhancing overall safety. By combining these approaches, solo travelers can enjoy their adventures with greater confidence and peace of mind.

Alright fellow travelers this week we’re diving into the R of our FREER travel framework. And R? Well, it stands for Research, which is like the secret sauce to cooking up an epic travel adventure.

I mean, think about it. You’ve got a clear vision of how you want to feel during your trip, thanks to our Focus session. Awesome job, by the way! (If you missed that newsletter you can grab the issue right here.) Now, it’s time to put that vision into action, and that starts with solid research.

“But how the heck do I dive into the sea of information without getting overwhelmed?” you ask.

Fear not! I’ve got your back.

Activities & Experiences: Begin by identifying the activities and experiences that align with your chosen feeling. Wanna feel adventurous? Maybe it’s zip-lining or a jungle trek. Looking for relaxation? Picture yourself on a sandy beach or at a spa in the hills. Use platforms like the TripAdvisor travel forum or local blogs to help guide your search.

Time it Right: It’s essential to know the best time to visit your chosen destination. What’s the weather like? When are the local festivals or events? Timing can hugely impact your experience. After all, you don’t want to be surprised if you travel in February and the activity you want to tackle is closed for the winter.

Open vs. Closed: If you’re aiming for an off-peak trip, you could snag some sweet deals. But also, some attractions might be closed. Double-check this to avoid any “Oops, didn’t see that coming” moments.

Go Local: There are many locally sponsored groups or organizations that cater to specific activities. Fancy a bike tour in Amsterdam or a cooking class in Bangkok? We have had the best experience with WithLocals.com for these types of experiences. Whether it was our cooking class in Rome or our walking tour of Barcelona or Lisbon these local guides and hosts have always created amazing memories for us.

Discount City Passes: I mean, who doesn’t love a bargain? Many cities offer passes that can save you a ton on attractions. Research these in advance, and you might end up seeing more for less! GoCity Cards can help you grab great deals on attractions (you can check out my analysis of the offers for a family friend trip to San Diego).

Transport Smart: Use platforms like Going for flights that won’t empty your bank account, Discover Cars for car rentals that won’t have you selling an organ, (you can see how we used Discover Cars in Oaxaca), and instead feeling like a savvy travel genius.

Alright, here’s a little challenge for you: Dive into your research this week. Use that feeling from last week as your compass. Then, start piecing together the parts of your trip that resonate with you.

And remember, while Google is your friend, so is the old-fashioned way of doing things. Talk to people. Share stories. Because the best recommendations often come from a place of passion and personal experience.

You Asked For It!

Speaking of research!! I’m interviewing a series of travel queens and kings over the next two months in order to prepare for the TWI Travel Planning Virtual Summit. And these travel experts would love to answer questions from you! Send me your questions and I’ll have a different travel expert answer them each week.

Upcoming topic: sustainable travel

What is a question you have about sustainable travel? Just hit reply and send in your questions and I’ll be sure to share them with my next guest and you’ll get your questions answered at the summit!

I’ll give you a new travel planning topic in each week’s newsletter just keep those questions coming!

So, stay curious, ask questions, and dive deep into your research. Get ready to create a trip that’s as fabulous and unique as you are.

Till then, keep your research game strong!

Alright, pop quiz: What’s the one thing that can make or break your travel experience?

Nope, it’s not how many outfits you’ve packed. It’s not even about snagging that window seat (though that definitely does have its perks). It’s all about how you feel.

Yep, you read that right!

Welcome to week one of our five-week deep dive into the FREER travel framework. This week, we’re kickstarting our journey with the letter F. And F, my friends, stands for Focus on feelings.

Over the years, I’ve seen countless travelers caught up in the whirlwind of FOMO. And trust me, it’s a trap!

I couldn’t resist!

But this trap isn’t in a galaxy far far away. Instead, it comes beautifully gift-wrapped in picture-perfect Insta feeds. The human ability to rationalize and accept our social media-imposed travel expectations is bananas! I mean, who hasn’t felt the tug of that envy seeing someone in perfect selfie mode at the top of the Eiffel Tower, right?

But here’s the kicker: If that climb ain’t your thing, then why force it? If lounging around and soaking in the city’s vibes while sipping on a cup of coffee sounds more your speed than shoving your way into a spot on the Spanish Steps in Rome, that’s absolutely fine! Your journey should be a reflection of you.

The idea here isn’t to be a travel snob. Nope. I’m just nudging you to dial into how you want to feel during this trip. It’s about being hyper-aware of what gets your heart racing and what soothes your soul. Why? Because that’s what will make your travel genuinely epic.

Taking my crew as an example, our Cabo trip was a blast, not because we ticked off every touristy spot. Nah. It was fantastic because we all got to do what felt right for us. And I gotta say, nothing beats the feeling of breezing through the airport without checking in a bazillion bags. But that’s our thing.

Alright, time for a little homework. Before you dive headfirst into planning your upcoming adventure, take a pause. Breathe. Reflect. Ask yourself: How do I want to feel during this trip? Jot it down. Stick it to your fridge. Make it your mantra. Because that feeling? It’s your North Star guiding you through this planning process.

So, here’s to breaking free from the shackles of FOMO. Here’s to focusing on what really matters: feeling fabulous, fulfilled, and freakin’ awesome every step of the way!

Stay tuned for next week when we dive into the R of our FREER framework.

Until then, pack light, keep it real, and remember – travel is all about the feels.

Nestled in the heart of Southern Mexico, Oaxaca City, the capital of the state of Oaxaca, invites you to explore an inviting panorama of history, tradition, and daily Oaxacan life. As an emblem of Mexican heritage, this remarkable city is a labyrinth of charming streets, timeless architecture, and teeming markets. With countless things to do in Oaxaca City, each stone underfoot whispers tales from the past, making this an intriguing destination for travelers seeking an authentic encounter with Mexico’s essence.

The magnetic pull of this distinctive city lies beyond its material aspects; it thrives in the culture, the people, and the mouth-watering local cuisine. By day, explore expansive and lively markets where the enticing aroma of local fare pervades. By night, Oaxaca City morphs into a melodious confluence of sights and sounds, a testament to the energetic spirit of Southern Mexico. Amidst these experiences, the spirit of Oaxaca City’s daily life unravels, offering visitors a rare peek into its heart.

Mentioning Oaxaca City without its iconic historic center would be an incomplete story. Distinguished as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this part of the city bears witness to a rich tapestry of history. Majestic churches, imposing colonial structures, and a myriad of museums coexist with markets abundant with local produce and welcoming food stalls. As you navigate the narrow streets, every turn unveils another chapter of the city’s compelling history. From the impressive Santo Domingo Church to the ancient elegance of the Oaxaca Cathedral, the historic center weaves a captivating narrative of time.

Experiencing Oaxaca City during Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead celebrations) offers a unique cultural odyssey. This vital Mexican cultural event awakens the city in a burst of color, music, and heartfelt emotion. Cemeteries become picturesque canvases dotted with marigolds and candles, while locals dress in ornate costumes and painted faces to honor the memory of their departed loved ones. Far more than a celebration, it’s a deeply moving display of Mexico’s intimate bond with mortality – a compelling reason for travelers to align their visit with this occasion.

Venturing into Oaxaca City is akin to unlocking a space where the past intertwines with the present, where time-honored traditions coexist with the rhythm of the modern world, and where every aspect of life is cherished. This capital city of the state of Oaxaca stands as a testament to the resilient character of Southern Mexico, laden with memorable experiences waiting to be unveiled. Whether it’s savoring the globally-acclaimed cuisine, delving into the historic center, or submerging oneself in local life, a journey to Oaxaca City is nothing less than a gift of memorable experiences.

So ready your luggage, make a drink with your favorite mezcal, and read this guide to let Oaxaca City welcome you into its captivating realm.

Exploring the Historic Center

Santo Domingo

Oaxaca’s Historic City Center is like a living, breathing history book, where stories unfold on every corner. It’s a place where architectural styles, old and new, coexist harmoniously, with colonial buildings lending a sense of timelessness to the city. Strolling down its lanes, you’re bound to stumble upon landmarks and structures that whisper tales of the city’s evolution, notably the Templo de Santo Domingo and the Oaxaca Cathedral.

First up is the Templo de Santo Domingo, a gem nestled in the heart of Oaxaca City Center. You’d be hard-pressed to miss its ornate façade, a grand spectacle that reels you in. Santo Domingo Church, a tribute to the detailed Baroque architectural style of Mexico, took two centuries to be fully realized. And the Mexican military occupied its halls from 1860 all the way up to 1994 before finally returning it to the Dominicans. Its grandeur sweeps over you, and the inside is every bit as beautiful as the exterior, with intricately carved panels covered in gold leaf telling biblical tales. Walk its corridors, and you’ll feel like you’re journeying back in time, surrounded by stories etched into the very fabric of the church.

View of arched hallways inside Santo Domingo

We hired a bilingual guide who was available just outside the entrance. He provided us with valuable insights into the architecture, the people who lived there as well as some of the more sordid details of the church’s history. I would highly recommend hiring a guide if you are hoping to get to know more about this beautiful site.

Just around the corner from Templo de Santo Domingo is another beacon of Oaxaca City’s history: the Oaxaca Cathedral. Renowned for its dramatic façade and towering bell towers, the cathedral stands tall, an impressive example of neoclassical architecture. Step inside and your gaze will instantly be drawn to the gorgeous altar, its centerpiece an image of the Virgin Mary.

Oaxaca Cathedral near the Zocalo

But the Templo de Santo Domingo and the Oaxaca Cathedral aren’t the only notable spots. As you wander through the city center, colonial buildings catch your eye, their striking colored façades proof of Oaxaca City’s evolving story over centuries.

And it’s not just the architectural sites that give life to Oaxaca City’s historic center. The city’s pulse is evident in its street art, where local artists have transformed walls and facades into vibrant canvases. These murals provide an exciting peek into the city’s ongoing narrative.

Just one of many examples of street art in Oaxaca City

The cultural center, another important spot in the city center, is a hub of events and exhibitions celebrating Oaxaca’s heritage. Showcasing a mix of traditional and contemporary art forms, it offers an insightful look into the city’s creative spirit and cultural richness.

No exploration of the city center is complete without a visit to the Museo Textil de Oaxaca. A tribute to Oaxaca’s textile tradition and the world’s, this museum houses an impressive collection of fabrics and traditional looms. It’s a chance to dive deep into the art of textile making, like what you can see on a day trip to nearby Teotitlan del Valle, from local weaving techniques to global designs.

Oaxaca Historic City Center is much more than a cluster of historic buildings and landmarks. It’s a lively mix of the city’s past and present, where history and modernity intertwine. From the awe-inspiring Templo de Santo Domingo to the grand Oaxaca Cathedral, the charming colonial architecture, the lively street art, and the enriching Museo Textil de Oaxaca, the city center is a treasure waiting to be discovered at every corner. This immersive journey into Oaxaca City’s heart is sure to leave an indelible imprint on every traveler’s mind.

A Food Lover’s Paradise: Savoring the Gastronomic Delights of Oaxaca City

Mole Negro at Restaurante Catedral

Oaxaca City, with its rich cultural tapestry, also boasts an equally diverse and fascinating culinary scene. Its local cuisine, a delightful mix of traditional dishes, delicious street food, and decadent hot chocolate, serves as a testament to the region’s profound history and vibrant lifestyle.

In Oaxaca City, food is more than just sustenance; it’s an experience. Traditional dishes offer a slice of the region’s history, packed with flavors that seem to tell their own tales. One must-try is mole, a complex and rich sauce with variations ranging from the chocolatey Mole Negro to the fresh and herbaceous Mole Verde. Typically served over chicken, pork or turkey, it’s a feast for the senses. Another beloved local dish is tlayudas, often dubbed as Mexican pizza, topped with beans, Oaxacan cheese (quesillo), meat, and a symphony of other ingredients.

Albondigas

Street food in Oaxaca City is as diverse and rich as its traditional dishes. Street vendors serve everything from Tacos al Pastor (marinated pork tacos) to Elotes (corn on the cob), sprinkled with chili, lime, and cheese. Not to forget, the popular empanadas filled with a variety of ingredients like mole, mushrooms, or cheese.

And for those with a sweet tooth, Oaxaca’s hot chocolate is fantastic. Prepared traditionally with water or milk, chocolate tablets peppered with cinnamon are whisked to a frothy finish using a wooden tool called a “molinillo,” this sweet treat is perfect for starting your day or winding down after a food-filled adventure.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

While the food in Oaxaca is second to none, the experience of exploring local markets elevates it to another level. Mercado Benito Juárez is perhaps the most popular market in the city. Buzzing with activity, this market is a fantastic place to sample local food, pick up souvenirs, and witness both tourist and local life together. You can find everything from Oaxacan cheese and local mezcal to colorful handwoven textiles.

However, for the ultimate market experience, the Mercado Central de Abastos outdoes all others. The largest market spanning over 800 acres, it’s a sprawling labyrinth of stalls selling fresh produce and local goods. From exotic fruits, unique local herbs, and handmade tortillas to beautiful handicrafts, it’s a sight to behold and a sensory delight. You will get lost here I promise you but enjoy the unique discoveries around each corner and don’t be afraid to practice your Spanish and ask for directions!

Oaxaca market fruit display

Mercado 20 de Noviembre, another remarkable food market just south of Benito Juarez market, is a haven for meat lovers. Known for its grilled meats section, this market offers a carnivorous adventure that’s sure to satisfy. Choose your meat, and watch as it’s cooked to perfection on an open grill.

To round off your gastronomic journey, there are numerous restaurants in Oaxaca City that offer a refined dining experience. From local fare to fusion cuisine, these eateries showcase the best of Oaxacan gastronomy. A few notable mentions are Los Danzantes, for their contemporary Oaxacan meals complemented by flights of mezcal, Quince Letras for its service and high-quality dishes, and Restaurante Catedral, known for its culinary creativity and exceptional flavors.

Half the joy of a visit to Oaxaca City lies in its local cuisine, traditional dishes, and delectable street food, which are abundant in its markets and restaurants that contribute to the city’s dynamic food scene. The activity of Mercado Benito Juárez, the size, and diversity of Mercado Central de Abastos, the mouthwatering grills of Mercado 20 de Noviembre, and the curated culinary delights of its best restaurants all make Oaxaca a true food lover’s paradise.

Day Trips from Oaxaca City: Exploring Beyond the City Limits

While Oaxaca City is packed with charm and history, venturing a little further out offers a whole new set of wonderful experiences. From ancient ruins to mesmerizing natural wonders, the surrounding areas hold their own allure and make for great day trips. We rented a car in the historic center and used DiscoverCars to find the absolute best price. This gave us the freedom we wanted to explore the surrounding areas independently.

Firstly, Monte Albán is an absolute must-visit. As one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Zapotec civilization. Its extensive complex of pyramids, tombs, and temples standing atop a flattened hill is a sight to behold. You can easily reach Monte Albán by public transport or a rental car; it’s just a short 20-minute drive from Oaxaca City. When we visited there was someone to show us where to park and guide us to the entrance. Otherwise, we had the grounds to ourselves. So if you are looking for a less crowded experience with Mexico’s ancient ruins this location will definitely appeal to you. You can read our entire post on everything you need to know to take this day trip to Monte Alban and more!

If ancient ruins pique your interest, then a visit to Mitla should also be high on your list. Unlike the grand pyramids of Monte Albán, Mitla showcases intricate geometric mosaics and is considered to be the most important Zapotec site for religious ceremonies. Mitla is about a 40-minute drive from Oaxaca City, and the journey can be made by public transport or a rental car.

Just beyond Mitla, nature lovers will delight in Hierve el Agua, a unique natural wonder that resembles cascading waterfalls but is, in fact, rock formations created over thousands of years by mineral-rich water. This geological phenomenon offers a unique, albeit sometimes crowded, backdrop for photos and a fantastic spot for a leisurely dip in the natural pools. You can reach Hierve el Agua by a collective taxi (colectivo) from Oaxaca City, which takes about an hour and a half, or by rental car. Be aware that you will get there a bit quicker by paying to drive on the toll road 96 pesos per car and you’ll pay locals 50 pesos per person to take the road toward the site and then 20 pesos per person to enter the site and park. You can read our entire post on a day trip that combines a visit to Hierve el Agua and Mitla and more.

Next on the list is Teotitlán del Valle, a village renowned for its generations-old tradition of weaving. Here, local artisans transform wool into beautiful rugs using ancient techniques. You can witness the process from start to finish and perhaps take home a handmade piece. Teotitlán del Valle is about a 30-minute drive from Oaxaca City and can be accessed by public transport or a rental car. You can read our entire post on Teotitlan del Valle including where to go to have the most authentically engaging experience.

Lastly, make sure to visit San Bartolo Coyotepec, famed for its stunning black pottery known as Barro Negro. You can watch artisans as they meticulously shape, polish, and fire the clay to create beautiful and intricate designs. San Bartolo Coyotepec is just 15 kilometers south of Oaxaca City and is accessible by public transport or car.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

Given the distance of these destinations from Oaxaca City, renting a car is a practical option for those who prefer the freedom to explore at their own pace. Websites like DiscoverCars.com offer a great platform to compare prices and find the perfect vehicle to suit your needs.

Each of these spots, from the ancient magnificence of Monte Albán and Mitla to the natural beauty of Hierve el Agua, and the rich artisan traditions of Teotitlán del Valle and San Bartolo Coyotepec, offers a unique glimpse into the diverse tapestry that is Oaxaca. So, take a day trip or two, and uncover the many treasures waiting just beyond the city limits.

The Art of Mezcal Tasting: Oaxaca’s Liquid Gold

If Oaxaca has a rhythm, it moves to the rhythm of mezcal. This distinctive, smoky spirit is an integral part of Oaxaca’s cultural identity and holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. If you’ve tried mezcal elsewhere, trust me you need to try it here. A mezcal tasting or tour offers an immersive experience of the rich history, production, and diverse flavors of this renowned spirit.

Mezcal production is a labor of love, a process steeped in tradition and patience, starting with the cultivation of agave plants. These hardy, spikey plants, with their varied shapes and sizes, dominate the Oaxacan landscape. There are several varieties of agave, each imparting a distinct flavor profile to the mezcal it produces. Espadín is the most common variety used, but other types such as Tobalá, Madrecuixe, and Tepeztate are also popular.

The life of an agave plant is slow and steady, with some varieties taking up to 25 years to reach maturity. When ready, the plants are harvested, and the heart or “piña” is extracted. These piñas are then cooked in an underground pit, a process that imparts the signature smoky flavor to a mezcal. The cooked agave is crushed, usually by a large stone wheel pulled by a horse or a donkey, and then fermented and distilled.

To truly appreciate the complexity of mezcal, a tasting is highly recommended. Expert-led mezcal tastings provide an understanding of the factors influencing its flavors, such as the variety of agave used, the region where it’s grown, the distillation process, and the aging period. Just like wine, mezcal tasting involves sight, smell, and taste. Look at its clarity, inhale its rich aromas, and savor its diverse flavors. From smoky to fruity, earthy to floral, every sip tells a story.

Get Your Travel Goals Newsletter & BONUS Workbook

For a more hands-on experience, consider embarking on a mezcal tour. This is a journey that takes you out of the city and into the rural areas where mezcal production takes place. You’ll visit palenques (small, traditional mezcal distilleries), meet maestro mezcaleros (master mezcal makers), and see firsthand the process from agave plant to bottled spirit. Some tours even offer the chance to participate in the production, like assisting in the harvest or the distillation process.

There are numerous mezcalerias in Oaxaca City offering tastings and several tour operators who can take you on a mezcal expedition. From high-end tasting rooms offering a wide range of artisanal mezcal to small, rustic palenques where the spirit is produced, there’s an experience to match every preference. Since we had a rental car and were taking day trips we stopped in the town of Santiago Matatlan, called the mezcal making capital of the world. Driving down the main street you will see numerous stores that sell mezcal and distilleries that offer tours. We stopped at El Rey Zapoteco.

At the time of our visit, they charged 100 pesos per person to take a tour of the facilities and learn about the mezcal-making process. They have a lively tasting room and a dining area. I highly recommend the shrimp tacos and a plate of guacamole with chips. You can, of course, order drinks from their bar as well.

In essence, mezcal tasting in Oaxaca is more than just savoring a drink; it’s an exploration of culture, tradition, and craft. It’s about understanding and appreciating the time, effort, and passion that goes into every bottle. From the slow-growing agave plants to the traditional production methods, every aspect contributes to the unique character of Oaxaca’s beloved spirit. Whether you embark on a mezcal tour or participate in a local tasting, you’ll leave with a deeper connection to Oaxaca and a newfound appreciation for its liquid gold.

Local Markets and Shopping: Unearthing Oaxaca’s Artisanal Riches

Spices at Mercado de Abastos in Oaxaca

If you’re seeking a close encounter with Oaxaca’s artistry, your journey must include an exploration of the valley’s local markets and shops. Bursting with energy, colors, and an array of products, these bustling hubs are essential destinations for those looking to take home a slice of Oaxaca’s rich cultural tapestry.

Stepping into a local market in the Oaxaca area is like stepping into a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells. Here, amid the hum of conversations and the clatter of commerce, you’ll find street vendors proudly showcasing their wares. From fresh, aromatic produce to handcrafted jewelry, every stall and shop is a mini showcase of Oaxaca’s bounty.

Display of colorful purses at Benito Juarez market in Oaxaca

However, it is the traditional clothing and wool that often draws the most attention. Garments are not just items of clothing, but wearable pieces of art. They’re imbued with generations of skill and tradition, and each piece tells a story. Whether it’s a handwoven rug, a beautifully embroidered blouse, or a carefully crafted piece of pottery, these items bear the mark of the artisans who poured their time and talent into creating them.

Now, where to find these treasures? Let’s start with Arrazola, a small town that has made a big name for itself in the world of alebrijes. These fantastical, brightly painted wooden creatures are the stuff of dreams (quite literally the original artist painted paper mache creatures that had appeared to him in a dream) and make for an eye-catching addition to any home decor. A stroll through Arrazola will lead you to workshops and stores brimming with these unique pieces, each one more intricate and colorful than the last. But we recommend you stop at Casa Museo Don Manuel Jiminez to see these figurines at their best.
Unfolding the layers of Oaxaca’s rich cultural identity offers travelers a multitude of profound and authentic experiences. The essence of this region stems from its deeply-rooted indigenous culture, a blend of distinct traditions and languages that together form a diverse cultural mosaic.

Oaxaca, with its 16 officially recognized indigenous groups, is an area of remarkable linguistic diversity. Numerous languages and dialects are spoken here, each carrying a unique cadence that encapsulates the region’s heritage. Participating in local conversations, even if just as a listener, allows visitors a unique insight into this rich linguistic landscape.

Multiple languages represented in a church

The opportunity to engage with local people and immerse oneself in their daily routines is a truly transformative experience. Their warm hospitality and rich storytelling are invitations to learn about their history, traditions, and ways of life. Whether you’re sharing a meal, participating in a local festivity, or simply engaging in a warm, friendly chat, each encounter provides a fresh perspective on Oaxaca’s rich cultural fabric.

One distinctive way to connect with Oaxaca’s ancestral traditions is through a Temazcal ceremony. This ancient ritual, which originated with indigenous Mesoamerican cultures, is a therapeutic experience that combines heat, herbs, and meditation. Stepping into a Temazcal – a dome-shaped structure – involves entering a symbolic womb, a space for purification and rebirth. Experiencing this ceremony under the guidance of a local healer is a deeply spiritual journey that offers insight into the indigenous cultural practices of health and wellbeing.

Botanical Garden in Oaxaca

The displayed artifacts – spanning from pottery to sculpture – narrate silent yet profound stories of civilizations that shaped Oaxaca’s cultural heritage.

Exploring Oaxaca is a journey of discovery, where each experience – whether it’s participating in a traditional Temazcal ceremony, conversing with the local people, exploring the Jardin Etnobotanico de Oaxaca, or appreciating the artifacts in the Rufino Tamayo Museum – offers a deeper connection with the region’s indigenous culture. As you delve into the depth of these experiences, you’ll find Oaxaca unfolding its narrative in a myriad of vibrant cultural hues, inviting you to immerse yourself in its rich and enduring heritage.

Juarez, a Zapotec from Oaxaca, rose from humble beginnings to become one of Mexico’s most revered presidents, known for championing indigenous rights and national sovereignty.
